It has come to that time of year again; I'd like to redo my resume. Instead of looking through the thousands of resumes available on Google, I was wondering if you might have one that you like? I'm looking for a very clean look, obviously. :) |

@DeJayZay, A resume's a compact document that people create to sell themselves basically. It's typically pretty brief and contains necessary personal/contact information, education, job experience, skills, and often a few professional references. You give it to potential employers, potential scholarship donors, and basically anyone who anticipate working with on a professional level. Err, I don't have very much experience with resumes. I only have mine and I don't even know where it is anymore :uhhuh: . I've attended a couple of workshops, but they haven't been very helpful. All I know is you should keep it brief. Someone my age (~19) should probably keep their resume to about one page. I think resumes look best when they're not flashy. I stick with a serif font (easier to read) at a reasonable size (~12 point). I'm gonna try and find a photo of what I've been told is appropriate for a college student... This, this, and perhaps this... But maybe my idea of a good resume is more catered towards engineers... >_< Not very helpful, eh? |

I honestly do not even... In a nutshell, a resume is a paper or document that details your personal attributes to match you to a job. As Spirit said, it's basically used to sell you to a recruiter. Frankly, the quicker you get onto writing a good one, the better off you'll be (and the quicker you can get into the workforce, because trust me, you don't want to stay out of there too long). You can detail things such as work experience and education (the most common ones), but you can also detail your personality depending on the role. Work and education-based ones tend to be stronger than personal ones, though. They'll usually wait until the interview to assess your personality. Anyway, I would recommend you make your own, Pandaa. Employers would have seen the same templates hundreds of times, so stand out from the crowd. It's also possible that the templates won't meet the legal requirements of your country, depending on where you get them from. The key is to make it easy to read and make yourself sound awesome in as few words as possible. Other than that, employers really don't care about the formatting. How to make a resume with just about no work experience is what I want to know. I don't really want to have to make one ever because I hate talking about myself. |

Make what experience you do have sound good. No one expects teenagers to have a ton of experience. |

Yeah, even if you're just a bagger at a grocery store, make it sound like you won the district award for Best Bagboy or some bullshit like that. |

Fair enough, I suppose. XD
Get used to talking about yourself. Nobody wants to hire somebody who can't tell them why they would be good for a job. As for what to put on your resume, if you're low on work experience then you'll want to focus on your education, skills, and/or personal experiences/personality. If you're still in your teens (I'm not sure how old you are) and just going for a casual retail job, then chances are the recruiters won't expect you to have much experience, and you'll likely still get picked over more experienced people because you're cheaper to employ and can be trained to their liking. The only thing you really have to worry about is being able to sell things (if it's retail), which some personality types (like mine) simply cannot pull off. Heck, I had very little actual 'work' experience before I got my job simply for that reason. My resume was mostly focused on demonstrating my skills, and I even used my forum administration experience as the main focal point of my work experience. I was able to justify as 'work' because I have been paid for it in the past.
Embellish, don't lie. ;) Edited by fantanoice, Aug 14 2012, 07:10 AM.
