So, I used to be a huge Muse fan. Origin of Symmetry, Absolution, and Black Holes and Revelations were fantastic albums, and come 2009, I was rabidly awaiting their fifth album, The Resistance. However, after really listening to it, I just felt that the majority of it felt like radio-friendly, poppy schlock, with the only standout tracks being Unnatural Selection, MK Ultra, and the Exogenesis suite. Now they have a new album coming out in October, The 2nd Law. Two tracks have been released thus far: "Survival," which is the official song of the 2012 Olympics, and "Unsustainable," which was used in the album's reveal trailer in June. However, these two songs just have done NOTHING for me whatsoever and it makes me really concerned for this album as a whole. "Survival," for instance, really concerns me in terms of lyrical content. Previous Muse albums have dealt with themes such as global revolutions, alien invasions, conspiracies, and the like. However, all this song is about is "winning." Winning a race, or an event, or whatever. Yeah, it fits the whole goal of the Olympics, but it doesn't fit Muse in the least, and while, yeah, it's pretty nice instrumentally, the meaning of the song itself just came off as shallow. And then comes "Unsustainable." It starts off great, with an epic orchestrated piece, and then it completely delves into dubstep of all things. I don't know about you guys, but it gave me a raging headache, as all dubstep really does. Sure, they're doing the dubstep part on actual instruments instead of a Macbook but it gave me a headache all the same. I'm holding off judgment until I listen to the whole album but if those two songs are indicative of the rest of the album, then I definitely don't feel too good about Muse in the future. |

I was never a really big fan of muse, but I somewhat enjoyed Origin of Symmetry and Absolution. The Resistance wasn't that bad, I enjoyed some songs. But yeah, I heard their new singles a while back, and I was extremely disappointed. They tried a bit too hard to get an intense feel in Survival, with a badly placed choir and no actual rising point like you would expect from a song about Survival, meant for the Olympics. In Unsustainable, they just veered off to far from their original sound. It's a decent song, but Muse should stick to their Origin of Symmetry sound. Matt Bellamy is a pretty amazing musician, it shouldn't be too hard for him to bring back their old sound. |

Origin Muse = best Muse. I mean, The Resistance wasn't a bad album; it just seemed like a "safe" album and it didn't really take any risks outside of Exogenesis, which made it their weakest album outside of Showbiz. It also felt like they made the album "too" diverse; they went from a huge Queen-esque song in "United States of Eurasia" and then went in a Radiohead-meets-Timbaland direction with "Undisclosed Desires." What made "Unsustainable" so jarring is the fact that it just makes such a drastic change from an epic orchestrated piece to loud abrasive dubstep, let alone the fact that they strayed so far from the alternative/prog rock that they're known for. If the rest of The 2nd Law is as weak as "Survival" and "Unsustainable" then I'll probably just be done with Muse. |

I'll be honest. I listened to Muse, and from the very beginning, they were kind of... meh.. for me. So in my opinion, touch they never had. |

Huge Muse fan here. Have you heard Madness? I'm pretty hooked, it's fast becoming one of my favourites (although next to Citizen Erased or Micro Cuts, it doesn't come close). Survival didn't get me going, but then it could just be one of the two duff songs they seem to have on every album. I'm looking forward to the 1st. |

Madness is a generic love song thrown on top of generic synth. |

I thought the same with Endlessly. But hey ho, I like Madness more. If a song catches me, regardless of genre, I'll listen to it.
