I don't understand, personally, why everyone loves Nintendo. I mean they're a great family resource and have great games. I mean...nothing can beat the uniqueness of Zelda or Mario. :D HOWEVER...I feel their graphics are lacking quite considerably. They feel so 20th century to me. So "old style". I don't like that. But then I tend to appreciate High Definition with lots of detail. :) So I'm more of an Xbox fan. Xbox Kinect is also better than Wii. You don't need a controller. "You" are the controller, quite literally. So what is it about Nintendo that people love? I've never understood. |

Well Nintendo has a great reputation for bringing solid and revolutionary gaming back to America after the great video game crash, they made a lot of risky moves that ultimately, rose them to victory! I mean once the Atari 2600 was kicked off the market, retailers in America wanted nothing to do with video games! Nintendo had to disguise the NES as a VCR like system just so retailers would even allow it in their store! On top of that, they offered to buy back any consoles that weren't sold, they revived us with Never before seen Smooth 2D side scrolling action and a lightning precise D-Pad, It was a huge deal! The Nintendo 64 later blew gamers away with the first 3D platformer and a n analog thumb stick which blew players away when SM64 came out! They set so many standards it's not even funny. For us who grew up with Super Mario, It will always have the top spot in our hearts, even if we prefer to play our Ps3's and Xboxes. ;) |

Not to mention Nintendo actually tries to do something different with each new console, with features that Sony and Microsoft have later attempted to emulate and/or flat-out copy (touch screens on the PS Vita, supposedly a touchpad on the PS4 controller, both Microsoft and Sony implementing motion sensing technology into their consoles).

Well touch screens aren't exactly revolutionary by today's standards. And neither is motion control, that's been around probably since the power glove. But at least Nintendo is stepping and and being the risk takers! That's what has built their reputation! |

Well yeah, my point was just that those features had never really been features of any sort of prominence on home consoles before Nintendo had taken the risk, as you said. Either way, @Quiver, to disregard Nintendo on the basis that you "tend to appreciate High Definition with lots of detail" is completely asinine in this day and age. Not to mention that your argument regarding Kinect is pretty dumb considering Kinect implementation in most games is pretty bad for the most part (though there are a few games which do the implementation right, but arguably so). |

The Wii was perfect imo, despite it's lack of power. What's with everyone and judging consoles based on their graphical capabilities anyways? It's all about the games girl |

I get annoyed when people call Nintendo's quirky hardware 'gimmicks' when better graphics themselves are gimmicks. Heck, why even care about graphics on consoles when PC will forever do it better? Consoles should be bringing experiences that you can't get on PC and that's the sort of thing Nintendo has always understood and always done. For me, I like Nintendo because they give me experiences that I can't get anywhere else. They have the quirky hardware, but that actually isn't the appealing thing, it is the games. Yes, there are similar alternatives to Mario and Zelda on other platforms but a lot of them only clone them at face-value, so you end up with an often prettier but ultimately less engaging experience. Then when you get the ones that don't clone them at face value and actually go for the deep emotive experiences, you get a different experience altogether (eg: Little Big Planet). This is definitely not a bad thing (I love LBP) but the point is that it isn't Mario. I can't get an engaging Mario experience unless I go Nintendo because everyone else who tries to do it does it wrong. That's basically it. Edited by fantanoice, Feb 20 2013, 10:13 PM.

I bet you've never played a Kinect. I can't say from any personal experience, but I've heard that the Kinect is barely responsive and most of it's games hardly work, if at all. You need a wide space to use it, so if you're poor and live in a small apartment, you're fucked. Etc, etc. I have played the Wii though, and let me tell you, if the Kinect is anything like the dozens of reports similar to what I've just mentioned about it, the Wii kicks it's non-controller ass. Also, if you're looking for HD games, that's fine. I guess it's a good think Nintendo made the Wii U. But since you seem to be going a little bit further into it, about how you enjoy "detailed" games, I guess scaling up to 720p-1080p probably isn't enough for you. Something like Mario doesn't need/shouldn't have too much detail in my opinion though, I think something that's very important for a game is sticking to a style that matches what kind of game it is, in Mario's case - bright and cartoony. |

I've played Kinect and the tech itself is fine. However, some (*cough* most) of the games are poorly developed so the movements are prone to lag or simply don't get a response. My friend and I tried a lightsabre battle with it which in reality probably just looked like two crazy people waving arms in no logical fashion because the game wasn't responding to anything. Dance Central is a good example of a game that uses the tech right. Also, it is always amusing to have a table or something in front of your legs and seeing the game try and guess where your legs are (hint: legs need not be attached to body).
It's my understanding that the Wii U doesn't upscale Wii games at all. However, Dolphin can (and does a lot of other stuff better than the actual console) so maybe look into that if it is that big of a concern. |

It does upscale, surprisingly enough. Even after Nintendo stated that it wouldn't, people have tested it, and it works. |

I'm pretty sure the title 'good old Nintendo' died with the N64. These days, I just consider Nintendo a gaming company that does what game companies should be doing. |
