So, before you even begin to read this thread, please note that there will be major spoilers here. If you have a game in your back log and it is mentioned here, it is at your own discretion you read what is written about said game, no one is responsible for you reading it but yourself. That being said, please be courteous and put the twists in spoilers, I have several games in my own back log that have a very good chance to be mentioned here and I plan to not read them if they are mentioned. So please, be courteous to others and put key points in the story/plot twists in spoiler tags. That being said, I will start off with one of my favorites in a video game ever: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic If you'd like to comment on it feel free to, or post your own. I'm a sucker for good stories and I will literally play an entire game I hate if I enjoy the story, it's also probably one of my favorite things to talk about when talking about games. So, what are some of your favorite plot twists/story moments in games? For the record, I know there is a best stories thread, but I consider this different. If it should be locked however, so be it. |

Allow me to beg your indulgence for a moment. My name is Simian Dandow, I am your Arcade Champion, and I've come to help the Internet. I do not venture into this topic to ruin someone's anticipation of an ending or an event that leads in the next act of a story. I have come to discuss what "plot twist" truly is deserving of the title of "best". "Best" is an ignorant way of describing a change of tone. Each one of the events listed have various effects in the history of videogames. If this forum wants to choose the "Best" event that changed the mood of a plot. Then we would first how to rate their effect. I say we start with the use of foreshadowing. A common literary device used in videogames used to give a subtle hint to the player that this character will become vital to the story in some considerable way. Some "plot twists" have little to no foreshadowing. Such as the reveal of Samus Aran, Metroid is a third person space shooter with a small spacesuit sprite. It would be near impossible for a common man to prepare for it. (Unless the original Metroid had a game booklet that already gave away the backstory and Samus's Gender, in that case, anyone who was still shocked by the ending is a clear ignoramus.) Other plot twists actually have large amounts of hidden build up. Such as the big reveals in games such as Portal 2. Where if you rescue a certain character, the seemingly unintelligble garbage they say will foreshadow the entire second act. I wish to prompt a discussion on whether we define the "best" plot twist, by the overwhelming amount of foreshadowing, or the lack of it. In layman's terms: To what extent is the use of foreshadowing essential to creating a memorable plot twist in videogames? |

Ms. SkittleE, I'm flattered at your claims. However, you misunderstood my post. The character I was citing was the Turret that you saved from the Redemption Line. Edited by Simian Dandow, Mar 19 2013, 10:25 PM.
