Explosions Reported at the Site of the Boston Marathon

you've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?
Absolutely horrific. Two explosions occurred at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Normally, considering this is Boston, I would have assumed it was a utility problem which caused the explosion, but the two explosions were within seconds of each other, and right at the finish line. There was apparently a third explosion, though it was a controlled explosion.

A series of explosions erupted near the finish line at the Boston Marathon on Monday. The Boston Police Department confirmed that they were looking into an explosion, but had no further comment.

The Associated Press reported that the authorities were helping injured runners leave the scene and bloody spectators were being carried to a medical tent that was being used for runners.

The A.P. said that a loud explosion was heard on the north side of Boylston Street, near a photo bridge that marks the finish line. Another explosion was heard several seconds later.

Local television showed ambulances at the scene. Pictures posted online showed several injured runners being attended to and smoke around the finish line.

The headquarters for the organizers of the marathon, one of the world’s oldest, was reportedly locked down while authorities investigate. Reporters inside the Copley Plaza Hotel, where the media center is and where many elite athletes are staying, were unable to leave.

The explosions went off more than four hours after the start of the men’s race, which meant that there were still several thousand runners yet to finish the race.

Big city authorities are typically on the highest levels of alert for events like a marathon, said Anthony Roman, a security expert.

“It is quite the counterterrorism effort,” said Mr. Roman, who runs Roman & Associates, a New York firm.

¶ For major events in New York and other large cities, Mr. Roman said the police would typically weld manhole covers shut, while also examining the entire route just before the race. They will also place snipers on rooftops, with helicopters overhead. Analytic cameras in the city will be focusing on the race, he said.

“They have all the analytic cameras in the city focusing on the race with their advanced software network, reading license plates,” Roman said.

The Boston Marathon is one of track’s most storied events, established in 1897 and one of the six World Marathon Majors. The event typically attracts an estimated 500,000 spectators and requires certain qualifying times for runners to compete. The course winds throughout downtown Boston as well as several outlying cities, including Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley and Newton.

Unlike many sporting events that take place in closed arenas, marathons are known and heralded for their sprawl, allowing throngs of spectators to line the 26.2-mile course.

Within minutes of the explosions on Monday, social media and cable networks projected the images of gray smoke on Boylston Street in Boston, emergency crews on the scene and an unknown number of persons injured.

Were there any casualties? I didn't see that info.

Truly sucks to see people doing these sorts of things. :(

Two dead, roughly 50 injured was the last figure I heard.

One of the deaths was an eight-year-old kid.

I can't tell what is going on, because usually someone would have taken responsibility sooner.

Last update is 3 dead and 173 injured.

As far as I've been able to tell all my family and friends are safe. It's been tough getting in touch from Orlando.

Sometimes I feel happy to be a Canadian.

I don't know what inspires people to cause the harm and sadness they cause in the world. I never will.
I don't know what it's like to lose somebody to a disaster or to the hands of another, I hope I never will.
I don't know what it's like to be the people who are suffering injuries and sorrows. I hope I never will.
I know my heart goes out to them all.
I know I hope those who are injured heal and those with injured love ones get their wish.
I know I hope those with lost loved ones will be able to progress on with their lives. My heart to them. I'm sorry.

To the people who have survived: I am happy you still live, and I hope your loved ones have too. I hope you can live on, and while maybe not throw this behind you instantly, not let it hang over you and cause endless sadness.

To the families and friends of the people lost, may your loved ones rest in peace, and may you be able to live on finding some joy at all to consume you and allow you to not let this sadness hang on forever.

Mike and Yeshua, from what I've read above you have family in Boston. I hope they are all okay as are you, and I hope whether or not you were present at the sight or close to the sight of the explosions that you'll still remain alright in the upcoming times. Even not being in a disaster isn't enough to not be affected by it mentally in some way, fear or sadness, and I hope you both can come to get over those feelings as quickly as I hope of the others.

On a final note, to the person who set off the bombs: FUCK YOU!

That is all.

I probably live the closest to Boston out of the bunch. Didn't some other random member live near here? MSD or something?

Yeah, MSD lives in Massachusetts too but I have no idea where. Mike, you're definitely the closest to the city; Mac's about half an hour away and I'm 45 minutes out. Still, I do have some family who live in Boston but they were unaffected by the incident, which is good. I also had some friends who were there, either running it or helping out. One of my friends had just crossed the finish line about five minutes before the bombs went off, and another was about three miles from the explosion.
