GELMAN & FRIENDS - OUT OF BUSINESS
This is goodbye. We've all helped run an awesome server for 5 years now. We've met a lot of interesting people. Made some great memories. Built some incredible things. But everything has to come to an end. Our activity had dropped to nearly zero. I stopped developing MCLight in 2014. There was no point in keeping this going anymore.
So I announced that December 31st, 2015 would be the final day of Gelman and Friends. These forums will remain online. The logs, website, and Faceboook page will remain online. If you want to contact me you can try these forums, my email (mtm4440@rit.edu), or my Facebook. And to answer your last question, no, MCLight will not be released. Thank you everyone for the too-many-to-count good (and bad) times I've had on here. By the way, that secret account of mine on the server that had no IP trace was trixent37. I'll miss you all. Well...most of you.

This is a problem. Some people need restricted access to the server. Why? Because this server lacks the same restriction that other servers have. This is a good and bad thing. It gives people the chance to redeem themselves and find where to be unbanned but it also allows users to break rules even after they are banned. Spamming with commands is easy to fix because of /forbid but some people are clever enough to abuse this gift and spam logins and disconnects. I'll give 3 examples of those kinds of people. Yesterday, January 18th, aaron.shallow.123@gmail.com was spamming logins. The chat logs were too spaced out for me the post, but along with spamming the logins he managed to find a bug where he could log in twice with his Minecraft.net email account. I think the reason he did this was because of the veterans who were on at the time started kicking him for his spamming and griefing rather than waiting for the vote to ban to appear and the auto-mute spam detector to take place, but that's a whole other topic. The only reason he stopped bugging the server through his unstoppable abuse was the server crashing which made him not come back. This next guy was banned for griefing and decided to rage at the server by spamming logins.
Luckily he wasn't stubborn enough to continue to come back after I notified him that I acknowledged what he was doing. And lastly, a reason I wanted krashfm not to be unbanned.
And the only thing that him to stop doing that is me unmuting him. All his annoyances were eventually stopped by being unbanned but that's because his intentions were to get attention to get unbanned and not purely malicious. Unfortunately, the other two people had spamming the server on their mind. The day krashfm did that was also the day I asked Gamerkd to add something to prevent some users from logging in.
But Gamerkd's response was this
And I understand why. Banning users from the server gives them no chance to redeem themselves, but sometimes you have to not give them a chance. Sometimes there's somebody who commits a crime so bad that they need to be punished in such a way that they cant effect others anymore, like sentencing somebody to death. My suggestions for this feature would be either to lie to the user by disconnecting them with "the server appears to be down" message or kicking them saying they can appeal on the forums, though if they are doing something so bad that they are banned from logging in then maybe they shouldn't appeal (though everyone should have a chance). |

I'd like to start off by thanking you for the effort you put into this post. You're gonna go far, kid. (Matt loves this song) but seriously it's true. More about Matt: In the beginning, watching Matt make decisions to give people a second chance showed that he cared enough about the people watching. After years of consistently giving many the benefit of the doubt (for a multitude of reasons) has shown he indeed cares. This has literally changed the way I myself make decisions. Now I don't have much invested in the way these people affect the server, but I think that if someone has resorted to spamming logins (I mean seriously who does that?) they obviously need something to do. Everyone who logs on the server has their lives changed; it would be best if their experience is positive. So about fixing it. Add invisible-announcing logins of banned people? Maybe I'm missing something. Sorry I didn't put as much effort in as you did, catman. |

That could also work if it was only shown in the logs. Not everyone needs that though so it wouldn't need to be applied to all banned people, just the horrible ones. |

That could work, but we also need /muteip. |

I am still against banning people from logging in. Adding /mutelogin and /muteip will work. |
