Off in the distance, Roll thought she heard someone shouting. She couldn't tell what they were saying or why, and from how far away, she was unlikely to be able to do anything about it...

For now, she'd have to deal with Cloud-Man and Junk-Man confronting her. And, to be completely honest, she didn't quite know the answer. She had always said that she was still the same girl, but it was dawning on her that this wasn't exactly the truth. Especially with the new modifications she had, Roll felt as if she was at odds with herself. Who was an ally? Who was okay to attack? It seemed as though Roll had to choose between being the pathetic, helpless housemaid she was to begin with, and the soulless, lifeless war machine that--unbeknownst to her--everyone made her out to be now. And she hated both answers!
Clutching at her head, Roll gave a pained grimace to the two Wily Robots. "You tell me...who or what am I...?!"

Junk Man and Cloud Man jumped back at the answer. They both looked at each other. Giving a corny answer would most likely just make her feel worse. "Uh... Well, Roll... You're..."

Cloud Man couldn't really bring any words to his mouth. Junk Man was just the same. They mustered up their strength, and Junk Man went first. "Roll... you're our friend. That's all we really want and need you to be. No matter what modifications you recieve or what occupation you have, we still consider you one. I just hope that's a good enough answer... I know it sounds incredibly corny..."

"But it's true, Roll," Cloud Man finished. "It's what we've thought of you since day one. A caring, lovable friend who, after the Coda stuff, wanted a little adventure, a little more than just sitting around. We understand this, Roll. And those modifications... They haven't changed what we've thought about you. Perhaps Heart Man is at fault for not telling you the real dangers; perhaps he isn't because he didn't fully know them... Either way, he didn't warn you of any of the consequences. The blame shouldn't be pinned on you, it's probably his fault. I'm certain they can be removed..." Cloud Man didn't say this with much confidence. "And even if not, it will never change how we view you. I just hope you don't think that's a terrible excuse, because it's true."

Roll had a lot to process with what the two were telling her. She barely knew where to start, but she found herself responding anyway. "Remove them..." she started by musing to herself. "I sure hope you know that no matter what you do, the nice girl with a broom isn't coming back. I did this whole thing to myself--because I wanted it--and Heart-Man either said or sure implied there was no going back. Don't blame him for it--every part of this is my fault."
"And more importantly, how could you still view me as a friend? Aren't you all supposed to be the bad guys? Gah, nothing is black and white anymore...I guess it never was that way to begin with."

Roll slowly unsheathed Virus, and held the blade out in front of her so she could see her reflection. Try as she might, she could not bring herself to smile at the girl she saw staring back at her. "There's no denying that this blade has changed me...but what do you think of it? The modifications...I'm sure you know what I'm trying to ask..." Part of Roll wanted to hear that she wasn't weak and helpless anymore, but another didn't want to endanger the mission and hurt her friends...why was there no line inbetween them?

(It's funny because I don't know what she's trying to ask)

(Really? I thought her thoughts would be enough of a clue.)

Irritated with the two Robot's silence, Roll tried to explain. In reality, she didn't know exactly how to phrase the question, but she would try: "Are you two worried about me hurting you?" Again, what struck Roll as a lose-lose question--if they answered "no," it would be because they still found her weak, and if they said "yes," it would all but confirm what a monster Virus had made her.

ProtoMan reached a tall building "This would be a good start." ProtoMan thought. He ran up each flight of stairs checking every floor until...he reached the top. There he saw them, CloudMan, JunkMan...and Roll. "Roll....you're ok!" ProtoMan said as he walked torward Roll.

Both of them looked at her, then at themselves, then at the sword. Cloud Man cleared his throat, and spoke a simple answer. "Honestly?..." he sighed, then said bluntly, "yes."

"It's only because of the position we're in as enemies. Plus, we don't know how to defend against swords very well, and we know you practice with it often..." Junk Man said quietly. "But in a way, no, because I hope we've managed to build up a strong enough friendship. Again, corny, but true."
---
Signal Man was starting to get worried. "Whoever is up there must be having trouble! We better go help!" Beaker Man rolled his eyes, but nodded. "Fine, we'll see what's going on up there."

They entered the building quietly, then went up to the first floor to try and hear talking.

"Roll, please, don't look down on yourself." ProtoMan said. "Because no matter what you are still my little sister."

At first--again--Roll didn't know how to respond. But she quickly found the words, and spoke slowly to the two: "First, you have one misconception--I've never trained with the blade before. Secondly...I don't know if being friends would be enough to stop this blade. I recently learned that it acts on its own...look, I--I don't like any of this! I don't like seeing you go back to Dr. Wily; I don't like not being able to control myself; I don't like fighting you!" Roll found herself crying, although she couldn't recall when she'd started. "Please...just end this senseless war...or the next time I see you, I may destroy you."

She put Virus away, and walked over to Proto Man's side. "Come on, brother, let's get out of here...enemies have taken this territory."

Time's up.

Glitch Man looked up at the building.

Glitch: ...

Glitch Man eyed a long ladder, leading to the fire escape. He glitched the lock, causing it to fall off and the ladder to fall. Glitch started climbing the ladder, and Rythem followed.

And, in the present...

Glitch got to the top, and entered through the window to find a group of robots.

Cloud Man and Junk Man fell silent. How they wish they could just leave with no consequences... That would be heavenly.

Yet Wily had a stern punishment for deserters, which was what Sword Man and Crash Man would recieve if captured. They felt like telling what would happen. Cloud Man cleared his throat, then said, "Roll-"

This was cut off when the floor suddenly fell through, sending both robots plummeting through the seven stories. They fell with a thud onto the bottom floor, knocked unconsious- or perhaps worse.

Two more robots had gathered around them, checking the injuries. "No fatal ones I can see on the fat one, but the junk one looks to be a bit torn up... Light can probably fix them both," a voice said below.

"Why couldn't we just melt them down? They're old robots," another said.

"We can't do that! The others here like them... I think," the first voice said.

"Their metal could be used for more useful things, though. Surely we can take some off the junky one," the second voice reasoned.

"No. These will be going back to Light Labs for reconstruction. It saves whatever friendship these guys have with the others, and it takes soldiers out of Wily's regiment. Go see the hostage- or hostages- up there."

"Fine, fine." Footsteps were heard, and Beaker Man appeared from the stairwell. "Everyone all right up here?" he asked. "No injuries?"

(Doesn't Cloud-Man sit on a cloud? How the heck could he fall if he hovers in the air?)

Finding her brother to be unresponsive, Roll assumed he was--like everyone else--thinking the worst of her. She quietly walked past him, and towards the unknown, but seemingly friendly Robot on the stairs.
"Everyone here is fine save for those that just fell," she stated bluntly. "Can...can we just get out of here? Please?"

Beaker Man nodded, and let her go ahead. "Hey, Signal Man, no injuries!" he called down. "Only seemed to have hurt the guys down there!"

"Good!" he called back up. "We'll bring these guys back and see if Light can fix them!"

Beaker Man went back down, then helped Signal Man carry Cloud Man. "Hey, uh, m'am, I'm not exactly sure if you're strong or not, but mind carrying the other guy with your friend over there?" Beaker Man asked, pointing to Proto Man.

"Yeah, lets get out of here, sorry for the silence let me teleport us.." ProtoMan then teleported Roll, Junk, and Cloud with him back to where HeartMan and the others are.

(Proto, Y U NO PAY ATTENTION?
Heart-Man and company went on patrol in three groups of three.)

Roll sighed quietly as she watched her brother warp away...by himself. He had recently developed a mental defect that led him to believe that he could carry others with his teleportation device, and this--obviously--wasn't true. Like pretty much everything else about him, he refused to get it fixed, and Roll had always suspected it would come at the inconvenience of others eventually.
"Well, there's no way I can carry him by myself...I'm sorry..."

"Ugh... First, that guy attacks Heart Man, then he thinks he can just us and him warp anywhere? Boy, someone got hit in the mental processor pretty hard..." Signal Man muttered. "Hold on a second... uh, Roll, isn't it? Hold on a second, Roll, I'll get the others down here and we'll carry this guy over."

He pressed a button on his arm protector, and nodded for Beaker Man to go forward. "Don't worry, Roll, Watt Man and Shuttle Man should be here soon," he explained. They then walked off.

Roll stopped for a minute. These unknown Robots knew her name? And there were others, too...probably eight of them, knowing how units were sent in. Were they part of the new Light series that she had seen Dr. Light working on? She didn't think they'd be completed this quickly...

Well, they were oddly friendly towards her--probably because they were new around here--so she decided to wait for their friends. Perhaps they would help clue her in. Sitting with her back to a wall, Roll pondered what she had said to the two Robots...she guessed that if she was going to be like this, she would have to stop hesitating to fight. Her friends would keep her from hurting anyone she didn't want to...right?
