Quint wasn't expecting such a rash attack on Roll's part. Using quick thinking, he jumped off Sakugarne, kicking it down from the blade. It sliced one of Sakugarne's handle bars, but otherwise it arced and clattered to the ground harmlessly.

Now Quint was standing on Sakugarne's middle handlebar connecter, still charging the Atomic Fire. He jumped off, sending Sakugarne away, and landed in front of Roll. "Are you sure you'd like to continue with this?"

Knight Man, Mega Water S., Tide Man and Spark Man reached the General Board meeting room, where the other generals were waiting. Ring Man was sitting down with the three new general's papers. Dive Man asked to Spark Man, "Are we going to do the short version?"

"That would probably be best. Two of our new generals apparently have to get somewhere," he informed him. Dive Man nodded, and told Ring Man to up the promotions on the documents. He gave them a list of rights and responsiblities, and handed them a small schedule as to when the meetings of this month would be. "That'll be all. Welcome to the board, gentlemen. It was supposed to be a fairly large celebration, but most of our army seems to be out with injuries. Go on with whatever you were doing."

"Thanks for your cooperation, Vestra," Shorde beamed, and smiled for the first time in a while. "You have no idea how much it helps us. Again, I'd love some tea, it's been a long time since I've had any. But...I'm in the Dr. Light base infirmary, still waiting to get my arm patched up. Unless you can get the tea here, I'm afraid I won't be able to have any. Some crazed robot swordstress named Malware went to town on me...I'm probably lucky I'm alive." Shorde briefly looked away from the video camera, as he heard the sound of metal feet, but he didn't like what he saw--a small group of Robots, carting in several defeated ones. "And it looks like I'll be in a line. You'll have to go hunt down the first one without me...but Proto Man, one last word of warning--unless you're modified to run off of Chaos Energy, it would be smart for you to not get too close to the Emeralds. All one can really do is force you to shut down, but when they start gathering, they'll become an issue...so try to stay away from them, alright? See ya."
With one quick flip, Shorde turned his watch off--he didn't know how it was powered, but he thought he should conserve it. "Uh...guys? Bio-form over here...it would be nice if I was first..."
---
"Thanks for making this quick. After all, we should save the partying for after we win." Tucking the documents under one shoulder, Tide-Man hustled back to the training room, where the battle was still taking place.
"I see you've decided to join us," Heart-Man mused as Tide-Man became part of the group of Coda Robots. "You've missed quite a lot, but the phenomenon is still going on...and I still haven't the foggiest what's gotten into her. Her appearance has changed as if she's transformed, but she still seems very much...herself. I don't think this was in the coding for Virus..."
"Oh, don't you get it?" Came Tide-Man's quick rebuttal. Heart-Man was expecting his practical knowledge to figure it out if he didn't. "I didn't see the battle, but I'd imagine she was skittering around and hiding like a coward! I'd be upset with me if that happened, not anyone else! I suppose Coda thought that the power made it impossible...but that's exactly what's going on. She's not angry at us...she's angry at herself."
---
Roll had guessed this was what was coming if she missed. Here she was, disarmed as she should have expected. Quint had his buster at point-blank, and he was mere tics away from hitting the third charge level. Attempting to dodge-roll away wouldn't put in enough distance for the shot to miss, which meant it all came down to this.
No time to shout something, no time to crack her knuckles first--if she didn't hit Quint hard and now, she was doomed. And she figured that meant another visit from those cruel Robotic girls. A good hit wouldn't stop his charging, but it would give her plenty of time and distance--both things she needed to grab Virus again. Keeping her grim expression, Roll raised her right fist and punched Quint squarely in the stomach...she could only pray it was enough.

Quint expected the blow to be coming. He flung his fist upward from his side, blocking the blow just barely.

"Wrong answer."

He let go of the Atomic Fire at point-blank range, jumping back as soon as he released. He turned torward the fallen robots at the side, supported Sonic Man up, and lead him away without another word.
---
Neptune and Venus had left the cave, a glistening red emerald in their hand. "She's a beaut, ain't she? Th' upgrades we recieved from Terra worked pretty well with th' power readin's, too! No damage an'where," Neptune remarked.

"We'd better store it in a safe place, though... Let's head back to Terra," Venus suggested. "He'll find a good place for it." They nodded, and went off in their leader's direction.

There was no need to recount the pain Roll felt as the fully-charged Atomic Fire tore through her. The force of the blast was enough to send her a good distance away, and now she laid burning at the Coda Robots feet. All she could find the strength to say was "God....damn it...I've...lost..."
The Coda siblings were at a loss--normally, they would leave Roll to suffer as punishment for failure, but nobody truly deserved to suffer from an Atomic Fire blast. Finally, Tide-Man could take no more--he fired his Tide Cannon at least five times, dousing her and emptying his entire water tank. "What?" He said as his ammunition ran dry, "nobody deserves to feel the afterburn from that." He extended a hand towards Roll, ready to help her up.
That was when Roll surprised him by standing by herself. "I didn't ask for your help, you know," was the only thing she said as she quietly left the room, inspecting her golden hair for burned sections. Heart-Man was going to follow her down to the infirmary, where he would be required nearly immediately, but after that, he decided it would be smarter to take a less direct route. "I'll see you guys later," he muttered as he walked out into the hallway, switching to his Welding Fist on the way.

(I'm suprised at how many times Atomic Fire has been used. I think this marks four.)

Quint was silent as he led Sonic Man to the infirmary. There was no need for either of them to talk- Quint's actions had said it all. "Are you hurt anywhere else?" Quint said as they nearing the board room. He only shook his head. Quint nodded, and opened the door for both of them.

He laid Sonic Man down on the bed, and was about to leave when he saw Shorde. "My God, what happened to you? Your arms look awful..." He walked over, inspecting the frozen casts. He switched to Atomic Fire yet again, and fired two small balls of flame at each cast. They didn't burn Shorde's arms, but they did melt the casts. "Hang on... I can fix this pretty quickly," he said, grabbing a disinfectant and a cotton swab. He dabbed the swab inside, and gently dabbed each wound he could see. When that was done, he wrapped bandages around each arm, making tight, sturdy coverings. "Your arms look like a mummy's, but at least it's better than sitting around with ice on your arm... See you around, I suppose." He walked out, ready to gather more of his fallen troops. Bit Man and Shark Man joined him.

Shorde was rather surprised to see a fire-colored Robot that clearly wasn't medical personnel giving him a hand, but he wasn't going to complain--in his book, any help was some good help. "Thanks for the hand...um..." he tried to pin a name to the face, but he had never met this Robot Master before. He saw a visor and a boomerang on his helmet, and from that he made a guess. "Quick-Man, maybe? I liked your older color scheme better, but I dig the shades...I'd check my RM database to be sure, but I don't want to be stupid and hurt myself by doing that."
Shorde laid down on his bed, trying to rest. He figured he would be fully healed by nightfall. He sat still until he heard more footsteps--light footsteps, belonging to a swordstress he hadn't seen in a while. He lifted his head in an attempt to see her, but what he saw was radically different from what he remembered. Her armor was differently colored, she was down one sword, she wore an angry scowl instead of a sad one, and...maybe it was just the way she stood, but she seemed slightly taller.

Roll continued her way into the infirmary, wondering where the medics were. After not spotting one immediately, she got irritated and wrote down her own check-in instead. "Roll. Impact damage from Tide Rocket, Glass Orb, 3 Hailstones, several Plasma Bullets. May have internal damage from Cable Whips. Suffered blast and afterburn from Atomic Fire L3. Washing off scorch marks now."
Without looking at or speaking to anyone--especially not Quint--Roll walked off to one of the infirmary's sanitary washrooms. Through the thin walls for privacy, the sound of running water was heard.
---
"...Well, it feels like it took forever, but it's finally done!" Fog-Woman said as she clapped her hands together. "The moment has passed, now back to work!" The Coda siblings quietly dispersed back to their jobs, taking the patrol routes along the center of town that they were now used to.
All except one.
"Since my arrival, I have been incredibly inefficient," Wire-Man said to who was now no one, "in fact, I think we've all been somewhat inefficient. It's time for me to pull my weight and gain ground for this war." Wire-Man dutifully marched down the hallway, to the computer Bit-Man had fixed before the simulated battle. For a brief moment, he considered how he would use it without hands, but he quickly found a solution. "Activate voice-command inputs. Perform system search for targets of high value with creator 'Dr. Wily.' " Wire-Man had no personality, but he at least had a brain--if he asked for just an enemy, he would get Malware, and she would beat him for sure.

The computer seemed a bit slow at first, but it picked up eventually. Three targets flashed onto the screen- Burst Man, Astro Man, and Star Man.

Oddly enough, it seemed everyone had forgotten about Star Man, sitting in his jail cell, flicking rocks around as if they were marbles. Burst Man was too heavily guarded by his own brethren, and Astro Man's location had been unclear the entire war.

Eventually another target came onto the screen- Crash Man. He was Wily's top demolitioner, and it might be likely he was a spy inside Light HQ. Of course, the crediblity of the claim could be questioned. Finally, it gave a probably more adept target- Magic Man, the front-line general and leader of patrols and scouting missions. It was assumed he was hiding out in the city somewhere.
---
Crash Man had limped down from the battlefield, ignoring anyone who were trying to help him. He was angry that he wasn't able to help his commander much- he thought this would be suitable self-punishment. He flopped onto a medical bed, moaning in pain about his chest wound. "Where are the medics here?" he wondered aloud.

As if on cue, Medic Man burst in, looking around wildly at the robots. "For cripes sake, I leave for five minutes and dozens of our soldiers are injured! Get me a scapel- I have to fix these guys lickity-split." He was handed a surgical scapel among other tools, aand began to vigorously work on the injured paitents.

As the computer listed its options, Wire-Man quickly reached the same conclusions as it did. "Burst-Man...too closely knit with allies. Chance of failure, ninety-three percent." "Astro-Man...location unknown. Searches will not be successful." "Crash-Man...under close monitoring. The first sign of straying will be detained quickly."
Finally, Wire-Man nodded at the sight of Magic-Man. "Magic-Man...nearby. Not constantly guarded by his troops. Confirmed to be a figurehead in Dr. Wily's army. Results...primary target material." Wire-Man had found a suitable target...now all he had to do was pull off the assassination. Finding him would prove simple enough, but killing him while no one else was around and escaping without his entire troop nipping at his heels..."that may prove quite the complication," he muttered to no one.
Nonetheless, he was going to try--efficiency was down too much for him to sit back and do nothing. Minutes later, Wire-Man was outside, wondering what would be a good way to scout out his target. As he thought, he noticed a fire escape on the side of one of the buildings. The sight brought a slight smirk to his face; it made it too easy to look without being conspicuous. Whipping one of his Cable Whips onto the metal bars, he shot himself upward and grabbed onto a higher point. Whip after whip, he was on a rooftop in a matter of seconds. Now the only trouble would be spotting him.
---
Heart-Man sprinted into the infirmary as well, relieved to see that Roll wasn't in the lobby. "Where were you anyway, doctor? I don't suppose you have much to do outside of the infirmary..." Truth be told, Heart-Man was beginning to get rather jealous of Medic-Man's abilities. Sure, he may out-heal me by a long shot, but there's no way he fights as well as me...or at all. Shaking the childish emotion, Heart-Man heated up his Welding Fist and started stitching up the victims of the fake battle.
---
Roll sighed quietly as she watched gray burns and scorched locks of her hair fell and gathered around the drain. She had never had the looks of a really pretty girl Robot like Splash or Fog, but she had always had a small amount of pride in her hair--like she had had in her cleaning abilities once upon a time ago. And now it was damaged...how long before such a trifle could be fixed?
How long before any of this could be fixed, anyway? She wrote it down herself, she had taken a lot of damage. With all the traffic going through, she could be out for a full day...or maybe more. Who knew what internal damages she suffered? Worse yet, they had to be from training. Mega Man taking a slash for Dust-Man was different; getting hit like that made you a hero. No; hers were from a practice battle, and the only thing they did was mark her incapability as a warrior.
Roll wanted to take out her anger on the walls surrounding her, but she restrained herself--because hitting them would probably only hurt her. She tried to focus on cleaning off her burns, but she kept getting distracted by how she'd received them. She'd been beaten by Quint--she didn't even like Quint! "God damn it," she choked out once more, noticing that her voice was beginning to fail her. "Why am I such an incapable fighter? Why can't any training help me get it right? I just want to be..." Roll stopped; this had evolved beyond simply being a help to society. In an instant, she thought of her brothers. "...I just want to be strong like them...I'm nothing like them. Why? Why can't I fight like them?"

Time's up.

Vestra began talking to herself.

Vestra: ...At least... I thought I put the red one in Speed Highway... Can't quite remember if I did or not. Oh yeah, now I remember. I moved it to Red Mountain.

"Erm... That's- That's unimportant. Right now we'll have to worry about these troops." He fixed Crash Man, and moved onto Sonic Man's broken leg. "What in the world even happened? An explosion?"
---
Quint had taken up Oil Man's body now. Bit Man and Shark Man agreed to get the hard part (no pun intended) out of the way and took Hard Man up together. They were all silent, checking for whatever injuries they could on their fallen comrades.

Bit Man and Shark Man were startled when Quint spoke rather abruptly- "Do you like me?" They both stared at each other, then Shark Man asked, "Uh... as a friend? Yeah. You're pretty cool, Quint."

"It just seems like so many people brush me aside, like I'm a nobody. I'm not bothered by it that much, but... The people I care about the most don't share the same affection in the least. I care about Mega Man, he could care less. Proto Man is as distant as I remember him. And... her- I bet she would spit on my corpse the minute I give up the ghost. So now I'm in a very bad situation- I beat the daylights out of my former sister, who hated me and probably moreso now. What the hell am I supposed to do?"

"Sorry, Quint, we've never had a sister..." Bit Man said. "But, hmmmm. Let's see... I guess the best thing to do would be trying to make peace somehow. Perhaps you could offer her some sort of way to apologize... Like a gift or something."

Quint frowned. "I'm not sure. She's kind of going insane with how her fighting has been mediocre at best. How will something like that help?"

"You know what she needs? Support," Shark Man cut in. "We should ship her back to Light Labs while she's out so she can talk to the First Rebellion- her closest siblings. They obviously know a lot more about her than we do- I remember a few of them acted like a shield from the criticism she recieved from the other bots on her Coda interactions. Maybe talking to them would be beneficial?"

They walked into the infirmary as Quint mulled it over. "...Perhaps. We'll have to wait for it, though. Just give her some time." They set the fallen bots down, and went for more.

Initially, Heart-Man ran through all the different falsehoods he could tell--he could just nod, he could tell a white lie and say that they lost a battle--but he stopped. "I realize that you can't possibly hate me more...we had a practice battle upstairs, and these are the losers of the battle. I told them to go all-out, and they did. We've got some good soldiers here...in that battle, I saw a lot of the spirit that I thought this army was missing." Heart-Man carefully set down Blackout-Man, who he had taken with him, and carefully stitched his oil lines back together. The large hole from the Bit Cannon meant he would have to completely rebuild a part of his chassis, but that was child's play to him--what would have really been bad was if his lights had broken.
---
By now, the inevitable had happened--Roll's demonic eyes softened as she began to tear up. "My brothers never cry," she whispered, blissfully unaware that Mega Man was doing nearly the same thing somewhere else in the building. "I can't fight with Virus...what was I thinking? I'm not helping anyone out here, and no amount of help is fixing me up...what the hell is wrong with me? I never should have left..."
Suddenly, Roll's legs gave out from underneath her, and she tumbled to the ground. The shock kept her from shouting out any louder, but she continued to fester as she laid there on the ground. "...Now I'm weak and a monster..."

Heart-Man hadn't heard Roll's depressed confessions, but the "thud" from the washrooms was enough to catch his attention. "I'd better go attend to that," he said to no one as he hurried up his work on his brother. As soon as he was done, he turned and walked there as quickly as he could while still looking professional.
---
It only took a couple minutes before Wire-Man decided that waiting around was inefficient. He covered it up with reasons that an aerial Robot like Astro-Man or Shade-Man could easily spot him, but really, it was the closest thing to boredom Wire-Man had.
As he looked around, he spotted a lightning rod on an adjacent building. Without stopping to plan, Wire-Man ran and jumped and threw his Cable Whip at the rod--a risky move, but one that worked. As he pulled himself up, a smug smile crossed his face, saying to himself that "these weapons were highly useful." Before long, he was jumping roofs quite regularly, keeping a close watch on the streets below.

Medic Man actually didn't mind much. "Training exercise? I don't mind. As long as it was for a good caus-" He then heard the thud. "What was that?"

Crash Man had also heard the thud, and looked worried. He tried to get up, but winced when he bended over, feeling pain from the wound in his chest. Medic Man sprinted over to him, gently putting his head down on the bed, and working on the gash in his chest.

Quint grimaced as he heard a thud from the infirmary sanitation rooms, but did not turn his head. Bit Man and Shark Man looked worried, but when they saw Heart Man heading torward there, they decided to not interfere. "It seems that suggestion might have to be used, Quint," Shark Man remarked.

"She'll never listen to me- I'm like that one cousin she wishes I would die in a hole. I don't hold any weight over her- and I can't even talk to her as a friend. She probably doesn't want anything to do with me, so maybe you should make the suggestion." Quint was angry at how easily he was quitting- and after a bit, he changed his mind. "Actually, no. I will tell her. Soon, that's for certain, but not now." They walked back up the stairs, gathered up Drill Man, Wave Man, and Snake Man, and walked back down.

"Shadow. Any ideas?" ProtoMan asked. "Go to Eggman, and ask him to modify your power core to run on Chaos energy, plus whatever you run off of. Which is..?" Shadow said. "Nuclear Power, it used to be Solar Power, but there was a problem with the energy circulation, so when Wily found me long ago he converted it to nuclear power to keep me alive in exhange for my services, plus, back then I never knew how evil Wily was back then, I just saw him as the man who kept me alive, but my circulation problem is still there, its just that eventually the nuclear power will run out because of it. But during the Coda war I nearly died beause of that problem. But one robot was able to recharge my nuclear energy with his." ProtoMan said. "Hmmm, go to Shorde, and wait for my instructions, because if you go to Eggman alone, he might reprogram you during your energy conversion." Shadow said. "Alright." ProtoMan said as he got on his ProtoJet and went to the Light Base. While Shadow skated to Green Hill.

Heart-Man wanted to announce his presence, so he knocked before entering the washroom. Without waiting for Roll's inevitable "go away," he let himself in. He was completely unsurprised by what he saw--she laid in a heap, sniffling to herself. He figured helping her up would be a step too fast, so instead, he sat down next to her and lifted her head to meet his eyes. Red eyes...slightly resembling mine, he idly thought. I thought she was blue-eyed.
"I realize the last thing you want right now is a pep-talk, Roll, so I'm not going to try it," He started slowly, choosing his words carefully like he was when he was turning the traitorous Rebellions. "All I'm going to say was if you had been fresh when you fought Quint, you probably would have beaten him senseless. So training didn't work out--so I'm going to give you a break. Go back to Monsteropolis for repairs, rest well, and don't come back until you're ready." As he said this, Roll's eyes lit up--that was it, the final sign that she had failed. And she would just have to accept it, like back in the old days. With a sigh, Roll closed her eyes and sadly nodded.
"Good, now finish getting cleaned up and we'll send you back quickly." Heart-Man took one of Roll's hands and slowly stood up, bringing her back onto her feet. Her sad expression was still present, which worried him, but he didn't know what more he could do. Before either of them knew what was happening, however, Heart-Man put his arms around Roll and kissed her--merely a quick one on her cheek, but both of them knew what just happened. As quickly as he had embraced her, Heart-Man pulled away, trying to hide his reddened face. "I'm so sorry...to me, it looked like you could have used that. Just...just pretend that never happened," he said as he darted back into the infirmary, hoping that Medic-Man would mistake his blush for trouble dealing with humidity.

Medic Man peered over at the quickly reddening doctor. He walked up to him and put up the back of his hand to his forehead. "Jeez, you're burning up! What happened- see something you shouldn't see? This place can't be that humid..." He went over to check the humidity meter. "Huh, yeah, barely anything..." He narrowed his eyes at Heart Man as he waltzed into the sanitation room, checking the humidity meter there. "...Some people take really hot showers apparently..." he muttered as he walked out, sitting back down to Sonic Man's broken leg.
---
Quint and the others had brought up the other injured, and were heading for more. Torch Man went up with them, saying it was only shoulder, and might as well just go. All four saw the spectacle with the two doctors. Of course, they made their own silent conclusions, and all of them were linked in unison.

Jeez... He kissed her, didn't he, Quint thought contemptably. I guess when you're built by a criminal genius who almost destroyed a young girl's life, you're allowed to court her. That certainly makes sense. He legitimately thought that would be a good idea even though he caused her pain and not much improvement?... Ugh, never mind, I've no authority over this after what I did... He went away, going off to get more of his fallen comrades.

Heart-Man only nodded, fearing that whatever he said would give him away. He went back to his work, trying to explain to himself what he just did. What's wrong with you, man?! Causing her physical ruin wasn't enough, now you have to make her hormonally confused, too?! No...stay calm...I'm sure there's a reason. I mean, you are Heart-Man, and hearts are a symbol of love...just don't fall in love with her, okay, doctor? There's too much to be done. Heart-Man began to breathe heavily, mentally repeating that "don't fall in love with her" line as he started work on Blizzard-Man.
---
To Roll, it felt like it took hours to clean off every last scorch mark, but it couldn't have taken that long, because when she walked out, the vast majority of the injured army was still there--and so was Heart-Man. Upon seeing her, he smiled, then announced, "Alright, do we have a volunteer to take Roll home safely? She needs a break..."

Quint, who had finished his last trip, fought the urge to raise his hand. He thought that she would refuse, and waited for someone to raise his hand.

Surely enough, Crash Man and Hard Man raised their hands up. "Uhh... Hard Man, you wanto to go?"

"I only raised my hand because it looked no one else would... You can do it."

"Well, you are her brother, Hard Man... but OK. Come along, Roll, the lab awaits." Crash Man hopped off his bed, and stood beside the young girl robot.

All Roll responded with was "it sure does." Holding one arm with one hand, she shifted uneasily, trying to avoid direct eye contact with anyone. Heart-Man quietly approached the explosive Robot and whispered, "take her somewhere where people will be kind to her...and if you can avoid it, don't take her to Loose Ends to be repaired." With that, he stepped out of their way and let the two pass to the teleporter.

Roll landed softly back in Dr. Light's Laboratory. She walked dutifully in line with Crash-Man, not wanting to impair him from his job. She only stopped once, by the door to the workshop, to say: "I'm back from the war, dad, and I'm not going back. I'll be downtown somewhere, getting repairs from a battle I just fought. I know how much you hate it, so I left Virus back in Mobius. Once the war is over, you can cut the teleporters and you'll never have to see it again."
Afterwards, Roll quickly caught up to Crash-Man, who was outside by now. "So, where are we going to fix me up?"

Dr. Light jumped up when he heard his daughter. He was shocked to hear her statement. "Honey, are you sure--?" But by then, she was away from his voice range. Light, dumbfounded, continued on his work.

Crash Man thought for a bit, wondering where she could recieve repairs. "Uh... Let's see. I used to recieve most of my repairs from Wily, but nowadays I go to a body shop on the east side. If you'd like, I can take over there." He stepped outside, and waited for Roll to follow.

(If Crash-Man is a spy, now would be as good a time as ever...)

Roll just nodded slightly. "That sounds quick and quiet. Let's go." The walk to the repair shop in question was quiet, and she mostly spent the time inside her own mind. She had realized that she was being far too much of a burden to her team, and that it would have been better if she had never tried to go. Maybe now that she was back somewhere safe, she could toss away the damned sword and maybe people would be nice to her again. She still burned with desire to be a fighter like her brothers, but there was no good in pretending--it just wasn't who she was.
Her brothers were built heroes. And she was built to live in their shadow. And, as it now seemed to her, nothing would ever change that.

As Roll came to this conclusion and other similar depressing revelations, the trip seemed to drag on. Only when Crash-Man stopped walking in front of her did she remember what she was doing again. "Oh, yeah...I guess I'll see you around," she whispered as she walked inside.
