Exactly. Look I'm not saying whether or not it's a good idea -- it is, after all, not my country. But if we're going to argue over secularism, and how formally secular the Canadian government is, then I would say it isn't formally as secular as the US. But that doesn't make it worse! Again, I reiterate that it was Canada with its catholic schools, that allowed marriage equality, not the US. And I know many people who went to a catholic public school, who know less than me about the christian faith. That being said, I'm a strong staunch secularist, so I oppose the continuation of this. And just because the majority of Canadians are Catholic, just because they consent to their money going to religious institutions, does not make it secular! Secularism is not about consent over a religious institution; it is about its separation. The separation of a religious institution, practice, doctrine, whatever, from government, when the people want a separation...and also when people don't want a separation. Consent has nothing to do with it |

I realize. In reality, I too believe Canada isn't as secular. I'm just saying that in some cases, WASPism tends to reappear way too often and make BS out of secularism. I wished that most religious opinion was removed from the government |

This is like saying someday in a hypothetical situation, that America is still a democracy, when a majority of Americans don't want to hold anymore elections. it's not! Consent is not the only factor here; the process is important. If Americans vote to end elections, and keep a guy forever, that is no longer a democracy, even if the money going into dismantling the institution of democracy came from people who unanimously wanted to get rid of elections. So it doesn't matter if the people who are paying for the catholic public schools are catholic; sure that makes it consensual, but it doesn't make it secular |
