Races

Natives of Audhulma are known as Audhulmese. They are mostly composed of Humans, Elves, and Half-Elves. A striking feature about the Audhulmese is that their body temperature is a constant 25 degrees.
There is no racial segregation between the three races, and they are welcoming towards outsiders.

Usually, the Humans and Half-Elves are the ones who travel outside of Audhulma to trade with merchants. The Audhulmese Humans are also the ones who make up their military. The Audhulmese Elves specialize in hunting the wild animals who live in the frozen desert.

The Audhulmese are known to wear heavy clothing that leaves little to no skin exposed, and a type of respirator/facemask with a pair of goggles during the colder months while outside of Skjaldbaka. Within the borders of the settlement, the Audhulmese do not wear the respirator and goggles. During the warmer months, their clothing style changes dramatically. They wear thinner clothing while within the borders of Skjaldbaka.

Culture

The Audhulmese are famous for wearing ice crystal jewelry that never melts. A violet ice bracelet is their form of a engagement ring and is highly prized on the mainland. Due to there being very few visitors, the Audhulmese welcome anyone who happen to be in the area with large celebrations. One explorer, Leroy Mallard, once noted in his journal:

"As we landed in Audhulma, the natives came to us with gifts and talked of celebrations. A large bonfire was lit and food was presented to us as we sat at a large table. People danced and drunk the night away. One young woman had her eye on me the entire night, she was one of the cheiftain's daughters. I never wanted to leave, but we had to. The cheiftain presented me with a ring made of red and black ice, said it should only be worn by sons of the cheiftain. Seems that word travels quickly. I'm sure I'll return in the future."

Skidblanir is the infamous Audhulmese combat sport. Combatants conceal up to 18 small projectiles made of ice in their sleeves and pant legs and use a series of kicks and punches to launch them at their opponents. Combatants can only score points by hitting their opponent with the projectiles, which can be broken when their opponent either kicks or punches the area where the projectiles are stored. The winner is whoever scores 10 points or has the most projectiles remaining.

Every month, they send a young man out into the desert to light a large bonfire in an area known to them as Erchgravt, or Ice Grave. Erchgravt is where soldiers and cheiftains are buried and where they believe spirits find peace. The purpose behind lighting the fire is to guide the wandering spirits of those who died to Erchgravt. 20 years ago, the Audhulmese failed to light a fire at Erchgravt and an erie fog covered the Glass Sea and all of Audhulma. Inside the fog, the spirits of those who died at sea and who weren't buried at Erchgravt attacked the living. It wasn't until someone lit a fire at Erchgravt when the spirits and the fog disappeared.
The Audhulmese believe that when an individual sees spirits under the ice of Audhulma, that individual is headed towards disaster. These spirits are often called Erchgardt, Ice Guardians.

There are individuals whose job it is to walk on the ice packs of the Glass Sea. They are known as Icewalkers, they are known to travel far into a frozen sea just to fish. Icewalkers are generally well respected for their hazardous occupation.

Religion

The Audhulmese worship no specific god, but pay special attention to the spirits of the frozen desert.

Local Legend: The Avatar of Audhulma

According to ancient tribal legends, there is a being that is the avatar of the entire country of Audhulma. This being is said to be a gigantic dragon, almost five stories tall, made completely of ice. It sleeps under the snow, waiting for a hero to take its place as protector of the frozen tundra. Within its frozen body is a blade of unbreakable ice that can freeze even the flames of Hell.

It is said that whomever wields the blade is the true custodian of Audhulma, the protector of its beauty, and the one who is destined to bring the country into an age of prosperity and harmony with the civilized lands.
