One cannot or should not speak of Thomas Story Kirkbride without also speaking of Dorothea Dix. Like Kirkbride, Dix was a reformer who worked for better treatment of those who are mentally ill. She even has a Kirkbride hospital named after her called the Dixmont State Hospital. |

It's thanks to such people like Kirkbride and Dix, that mental ill people don't have to go through a lobotomy and other treatments like that. And that they not alway end up behind bars in a mental asylum. |
