RPG of the Year

.hack//G.U.

I was introduced to this awhile back, and I had a really hard time trying to catch it. And, I find it pretty fun. It has an engaging, interesting story to couple with its solid characters. The designs are peculiar, though. The gameplay is pretty fun. It's not flashy. But, fun.

New Found Oldie of the Year

Metal Gear Solid

...what? I hadn't been able to get this game for YEARS. This is a very fun game. I never expected it to be, but it is. The story is very engaging and interesting, which I didn't expect at all. The soundtrack and voice acting are incredible.

Game of the Year

Super Mario Galaxy

Unexpected, wasn't it? :P The true sequel to Mario 64. OK, I'll be honest, the first thing that brought me in is the orchestra music I heard that was included in the game prior to playing it. Then, I took a look at one level. It was filled with a mixture of innovation and nostalgia. The art and level design is also amazing. Sure, there's Mario 64 flavor on it, but there's much more to it that makes itself different. And, best of all, you can play as Luigi. Though, there's one little gripe, but heh, it can be easily be overlooked. And, what's good is...it's not that easy. :D

Your turn.

Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions

Its a port, yes, but its so awesome, it deserves the title. Also, I just can't think of anything else good this year.

New Found Oldie of the Year

Jak II

Sweet guns, uber storyline, perfect balance, no extremely annoying things, great animations.... uh yeah. Just finished it two hours before the new year :P

Persona 3

It was pretty damn fun. The overall designs are interesting and refreshing for something that can be ALMOST considered a "fantasy" RPG and they had some neat concepts and side-stories. It was also voiced very well for something that's from an underground (well in the US anyway) company. Almost all the characters are endearing (well, except for HIM *beats Ken*) and many of the "minor" characters are quite memorable. It's true that they have a couple cliches that would typically be groaned about, but thankfully a refreshing spin is put on them. Also an above average degree of logic is employed in the overall execution of events as well as the idea that you have a certain amount of "time". There is also a certain emphasis unlike other RPGs placed in the characters that make them seem like people seperate from your control rather than just simple "extentions" from your main character.
Some of the drawbacks is that graphics-wise it's not going to blow your mind, but the style of it more than balances it out. There are also some minor script errors but unless you really look for them (or are fairly observant) they will go unnoticed. It may be considered repetitive, however this aspect is explained early on which makes sense in the game's setting. Also in comparision to other games of this franchise and its main branch (Shin Megami Tensei) it's a bit on the easy side.
An almost seperate drawback is that an apend-disc may or may not being coming out in Febuary 2008. The extended disc contains several extras in the main game as well as a completely seperate "epilogue game" which elaborates on the game's ending as well as the results of all of the characters and character ties created in the main game.

Okami

It's pretty self-exlainatory. YOU GET UBER BRUSH GOD SKILLS.

Game of the Year

Given that I didn't get to play many games that came out just THIS year, I guess I'll do what Vaerli did and restate a game: Persona 3.

Elder Scrolls IV:Oblivion
This game is a twist from Square Enix and Atlas. The sheer freedom that this game allows is outstanding. It also helps that the graphic effects are awesome, and there's never a lack for anything to do, due to expansive worlds and hundreds to quest to be unfolded.

Boom Boom Rocket

Reminding us why games like Guitar Hero have become a success, Boom Boom Rocket combines addicting gameplay with catchy music and challenging modes. Be forewarned however; this is not an easy game to play. If you have Xbox 360 Live Arcade, you may remember this classic.

Game of the Year
Bioshock

Never has a game been so unique than Bioshock has. The use of in-game cutscenes never drag you away from the action, and the atmospheric gameplay keeps you on your toes. The graphics are also top-notch as well as the voice acting. You never have to worry about having enough to survive, but every fight makes you feel insecure about that fact;from a Thuggish Splicer to a hulking Big Daddy, every fight is somewhat challenging. The Plasmids that give you special abilities are also fun to experiment with, as one snap of your fingers can incinerate a person, zap a series of deranged citizens stepping in water, or grab an object out of the air and hurl it right back. There are also a quite a few Achievements to be gained on the 360 game, so if you're into that, Bioshock can net you quite a few of them.
