Well, Watchman is just about a week away and reviews have popped up.

Quote:

the London Times, Kevin Maher wrote: "It's not for the faint-hearted -- and, despite the preponderance of Spandex outfits, capes and costumes, not for kids either. Limbs are broken, bones are smashed and skulls split."

Quote:

Guardian newspaper put it: "This is an [R-rated] superhero movie which makes last year's famously brooding Batman sequel The Dark Knight look like Alvin and the Chipmunks."

Quote:

Steve Anglesey remarked similarly in the London Daily Mirror: "Watchmen is unlikely to steal Slumdog Millionaire's tagline of 'the feel-Good Movie of the year!' but it's searing, spectacular and simply unmissable."

Quote:

Time magazine's website, columnist Matt Selman commented, "It's a serious freak-out. ... Watching the visual world of the Watchmen movie unfold was one of the most powerful experiences I've ever had. Not film experiences. Just Experiences."

Quote:

Huffington Post blog, entertainment writer Mike Ragogna concludes: "It will demand your attention and intelligence as it entertains; it's sophisticated and sensationally sophomoric; and for those ... without any expectations or knowledge of the comic's storyline or historical importance, this really will be a blast."

now, here's one negative review.

Quote:

Robbie Collin wrote on the News of the World website: "This two-and-a-half-hour wannabe pop culture epic isn't the worst superhero movie ever made, mind. But it Is one of the most spirit-crushingly disappointing. Because this time round, it was supposed to be all so different. We were promised darkness. We were promised maturity. But what we've got, is 163 minutes of tin-ear dialogue and absurd violence.

UGO's review

That might be the best way to sum up Watchmen. It is impressive and a wonder and a treat and a minor miracle it exists at all. It is a testament to Zack Snyder’s will (and the clout a hit like 300 can get ya) that he got this movie made the way he wanted - and as good as a faithful Watchmen adaptation could ever be.

IGN's review (they pretty much read the graphic novel a lot, too)

Quote:

It's the Watchmen movie you always wanted to see but never expected to get. Snyder's Watchmen is a celebration of how films can add worthwhile dimensions to a beloved story – at all times reverent to the original, but careful to remind us that costumes and masks are never as colourful as the people underneath.

Now some from the long time readers of Watchmen.

Well, so they changed the ending, and some other stuff, yet basically the themes, etc. are still there, huh? Interesting.

Rorschach's Journal 60
Date: March 20th, 2009

Saw the movie. With no prior reading. Before me was an essay of what would heroes would be like in real life...

Sat through it all. Cringed at the overexaggerated violence, and dragged sex scenes

Was a good story. But, left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Now, I'm left with complete delusionment...why I couldn't enjoy this film. Perhaps, it just wasn't the right time for me to watch it. Maybe, it's because I felt it would of gave a sense of escape. Yet all I see before me is the tortured souls I longed to break free of - they were never set free.

And, now I talk like Rorschach.

Let it be known that this won't stop me from reading the comic. Maybe then I'll be able to appreciate this film even more, since I can't help but wonder what the big deal is. But, then again, it was said to be faithful...faithful to a fault. I say...they are right.

[/end entry]

I like the actors they chose though. Especially Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan. Felt a connection with Dr. Manhattan somehow.

"Now do you understand, I'm not locked in with you. You're locked in with ME!!"
