75 B.C., Italian Alps: The night is chill and crisp, snow crunches audibly under the fur wrapped sandals of the two Roman Soldiers of the XII Cohort. One of the men wears a wolf pelt over his shoulders as he carries a golden Roman Eagle with the battle standards of his Legion hanging from them. The other solider wears the linked armor and helmet of Roman Centurion; his red cloak hangs from his shoulders as the handles to twin gladius protrude from his back. The standard bearer breaths heavily as he looks frightened at the warrior near him. The warrior looks around the forest they are deeply immersed in, his deeply golden skin suggest his father as a Roman and his mother a Numidian Noblewoman. He takes a deep breath and says, “We must stay together, we can reach Marius’s camp if we keep heading south.” The standard bearer says, “What were those things, surly the Cimbrians are not monsters?, Decimus?” The warrior looks about the woods straining to hear as he says, “No what we encountered were not Cimbrians, they were wolf men, my mother’s clan have stories of such creatures.” The standard bearer opens his mouth to speak when a fierce howl fills the forest. A deep guttural growl echoes from all around them as dozens of bright yellow orbs appear in the shadows about them. The standard bearer hears the sound of Decimus Quintillias Numidis’s gladius sliding from their sheaths. The standard bearer allows one whimper to escape his lips as he drops the golden eagle of the all vaunted Roman Republic and flees. Decimus screams, “NO YOU FOOL, STAND AND FIGHT!!!!” The standard bearer flees into the shadows and a few short seconds later the sound of a horrified scream is heard, followed by the sound of breaking bones. Decimus grinds his teeth as the cold bites deep into his soul, he thrust his twin gladius into the snow covered ground and kneels down to pick up the fallen eagle. He hefts it and thrust it deep into the snow. He slowly takes off his helmet exposing his clean shaven head, the heat from his scalp giving him a plume of steam rising from his head. He retrieves his swords to the sound of challenging barks and growls from the shadows. He stands before the golden eagle of Rome as the wind sweeps the forest and whips his crimson cloak about him. He bangs his swords together as he says, “Come then beast and let us be done with it!” All around him, emerging from the shadows, dozens of massive bipedal Lycans approach, they froth at the mouth with red blood from the slaughtered Cohort of Decimus. Their long sharp claws glisten in the light as their nearly 8 feet tall forms tower over the lone warrior. Decimus feels the cold hand of fear grip his heart at the sight of such beast, but he quickly stamps it down, envisioning instead of mythical beast one of the many barbarian foes he has faced in the name of the Republic. Decimus allow his swords to go wide as he looks about at the beasts. He sweeps the swords in front of him kicking up the snow in front of him as one of the beast lunges forward, dropping to all fours and taking great galloping strides toward him. As the beast lunges at the last minute Decimus lunges forward as well, tucking himself into a roll and passing under the beast, as he rolls up his gladius slices along the abdomen of the beast who shrieks, as it balls up and rolls across the ground. Decimus rolls to his feet and turns to face the beast, his cloak flaring behind him as he charges forward, snow kicking up in all directions. He lunges forward with a double stab of his blades, the beast with uncanny agility leaps into the air and climbing the trunk of a nearby tree, jumps from tree to tree and lands behind Decimus with audible thump. Decimus swings his sword backward, but as he does the Lycan slashes upward ripping the underside of Decimus arm rending it useless as it hangs lifeless at his side. Decimus screams as the pain rips up his up body from the blow. He stumbles back, heavily bleeding, pointing his good sword at the approaching beast who shows no sign of injury from his sword blows. The blood loss becomes a hindrance as the gray maned Lycan lunges at him, Decimus parries one blow but another sails in and rakes across his thigh dropping him to one knee. He grunts as he holds his sword out in a defensive posture. The Lycan snarls as it slaps the blade out of Decimus’s hand and leaves him on his knees, his blood coloring the white snow red, Decimus shivers as the cold becomes more pronounced to him. He looks up as the Lycan raises it’s cruelly clawed hand high over its head for the killing blow. A massive roar fills the area as the Lycan turns and growls lowly, from out of the shadows a jet black Lycan emerges, it passes through the pack of Lycans, who all lower themselves to their hunches and click their jaws and turn their heads in supplication. The gray mane Lycan backs away as the Alpha Lycan towers of Decimus who looks up weakly and with blood on his teeth smiles as he spats at the beast. The eyes of the black mane Lycan glow as it lowers its head and brings it’s fierce jaws close to Decimus’s face…….. 1444 A.D. Wallachia, Castle Brun: The lighting stabs violently through the night sky as the two nemeses meet for the last time. Vlad stands perched on one foot lightly upon the great crufix that decorates the main tower of Castle Brun, his great coat flutters in the fierce summer storm as he looks down and says, “All your plots and plans, have brought you to this very moment in time Decimus…now what will you do?” Decimus Quintillias Numidis’s eyes glow with a golden hue as he stands bare chested on the parapet below the tower. His defined musculature glistens with sweat and cuts and blood that is not his own. In the streets below the city, the moving line of torches indicates that the Ottoman Army had breached the final defensive walls and were advancing on the castle. Decimus looks up at Vlad and says, “There is a part of me that does not want it to be this way Vlad, we fought as brothers once, we drew a line in the sand against the sons of Osman and fought a great crusade. Why did you betray me?” Vlad’s eyes flash red as he holds his arms wide and slowly floats down from the crufix and lands before Decimus as he says, “Why? Because you no longer had any value to me once I gained my godhood.” Decimus shakes his head sadly as he says, “You allowed all this? Because you think you are a god? You are no god Vlad, you are a vampire now a blood sucking parasite.” Vlad snarls as he says, “And what does that make you, a mindless beast during the full moon, a mindless pawn!” Decimus looks shocked and takes a step back as Vlad grins and says,”Oh I know of your deal with the great powers of beyond, you are as much a heretic as me Decimus, but the difference is I will survive this night, you will not.” Vlad points to the black boiling clouds over the castle as he says,”No moon!” Vlad moves faster than the eye as his steel grip closes on Decimus’s throat and hoist’s him high into the air. Decimus grunts from the force as he chokingly says, “I…..I do….not need…the moon.” Vlad looks puzzled as he feels his grip being pushed loose by the expanding neck of Decimus. Vlad hisses as he drops Decimus and jumps back to safe distance. Decimus lays on the parapet and grabbing at his ribs looks up as his eyes become pure pupils. He roars in pain as his bones crack and expand and reset. His pants rip free as his legs gain pure muscle mass, his skin becomes obscured by a thick layer of gray hair. Decimus’s jaw breaks and begins to jut forward transforming his simian face to a lupine one. Vlad looks up as the now 8 foot tall Lycan looms over him and looking down growls menacingly. Vlad bears his fangs as he leaps backward and pulls his sword from his sheath and with a wicked grin motions for Decimus to come forward. The Lycan Decimus takes a step forward but stops and quirks his massive head as his ears flatten to his head. He bares his fangs and reaching down grabs one of the massive stones of the parapet and rips it free with an audible crack, he picks the 3000lb stone over his head and hurls it at Vlad who easily leaps over it and spins in the air with an agile grace, as Vlad begins to land he feels a massive blow to his mid section as the force of the punch hurls him into the wall of the tower, cracking the stone. His sword spins away as he breathes heavily and tries to regain his feet. He looks up to see Decimus as the lighting lances behind him, the massive Lycan howls, throwing his arms wide to proclaim the dominance of Lycan over Vympyre on this night. Vlad curses and rolls clear of the downward strike of the lethal claws of the Lycan as he jumps to the parapets walls and standing on the edge smirks as he jumps over the edge. As he plummets down to the gorge below he feels a massive impact and looks over his shoulder to see the massive arms of Decimus wrapped about him. The rows of sharp serrated teeth in his face………….. 1775 A.D., Sleepy Hollow, New York: The front rank of 14th New York Volunteer Regiment tremble as the “Kings Own Rifles” march in perfect lock step across the now trampled farm field. Their red coats bold and unbeaten, their Union Jack flapping proudly in the mid day sun. But what appears behind the front ranks causes cold fear to rip their ranks as they see “him” His black charger gallops jauntily across the field before the British Imperial lines. His uniform is an exact match to the British uniforms but his is jet black. His tri corner hat has a bright blue plume that sways with the wind as his red cloak flaps furiously. The rebel line buzzes with the name. “Lord Bannister Fairfax” The Horseman as they call him, the most feared British Officer of the Empire. The stories had circulated for months about him, his massacre in Trenton, his purges in Boston. It was said that General Washington had nightmares about him. The rebels watched as Fairfax’s horse stopped before the massive Union Jack and reared up onto its hind legs, Fairfax looks in the directions of their lines and they see his unholy golden eyes. Before a shot is fired, the front line of the rebel forces break, screaming of the devil in human skin. As they flee the might of the British firing line is felt as the front line opens up on the retreating forces killing hundreds in seconds. Lord Bannister Fairfax charges his horse forward screaming, “For King and Country kill them all my boys.” The pursuit goes deep into the woods. Lord Fairfax rides along, until a rope snares the legs of his horse and sends him flying from the horses back. He tucks his knees and lands on his feet sliding the last few meters as he comes to his full height and looks about the glade he is in. Dozens of rebel soldiers surround him, some with looks of terror others with looks of wicked delight as one of them says, “Well look here boys, it’s the boogey man Fairfax himself.” Lord Fairfax pulls his Calvary sword and bowing says, “Aye, Lord Bannister Fairfax at your service you filthy traitors.” Some of them laugh as their would be leader leans on a tree and says, “Fairfax you mistake these fine boys, they are not part of the Continental Army, they work for me, and I know who you really are….Decimus Qunitillias Numidis.” Fairfax looks puzzled as he looks about the clearing and takes true stock of the men surrounding him, all holding silver coated weapons. Fairfax growls as he says, “Hunters then?” The leader nods and says, “The Vatican will be happy to hear that after all this time we got you.” Decimus grins as he says, “That is a report that will never reach his Holiness.” Decimus draws back and hurls his sword impaling the man next to the leader to a tree with the sword. Decimus smiles as he rips his cloak and uniform coat free and roars fiercely, his body begins to expand and grow with his transformation. The leader of the Hunters pulls a crossbow from behind the tree and with trembling hands aims for the heart of Decimus, the sliver tipped arrow streaks out and strikes home. Decimus takes a short gasp and looks down at his chest and roars as he feels the silver race through his veins arresting the transformation, he grimaces as his muscles lock up and his skin turns ashen his lips turn blue as he falls back and lays unmoving on the ground. The golden eyes of Decimus Numidis fade…… |
