How much do you guys know about rental cars? With the one friend I had a solid chasing lead on having moved to Kansas with a job in meteorology (of which I'm incredibly glad, btw, since I know how fervently he was searching for it), my chances for hurricane (or tornado, even) chasing are diminished. So I'm considering rental cars... at least for the hurricane part (it almost seems like a waste of money to rent a car for tornado chasing since they're more capricious and often more localized). My question is -- for those of you that have experience with them -- do they run a background check on your driving record? As many of you already know, last year I lost my car in an accident that was my fault; and having only liability, I had no power to recoup my losses -- everything went to paying for the damages I inflicted on the other driver. Logically, that seems like at the very least it would gouge up rental prices, and I would be surprised if they didn't check for that. Any input would be appreciated, you guys! |

Okay, honestly, I have no idea whether anyone will even rent to you for that purpose, and if there IS damage to the car you definitely are liable. As for other things, I don't know too much; I know you have to be over 21 for some rental companies, don't know if that's an issue for you. I have no idea if they check with your insurance on your record, but they might. Of course, you also pay by the day and I think it's more to take it out-of-state, usually. You also are in charge of gas and are usually required to return the car with equal or more gas than you got it with (which means everyone usually tries to return it as close to empty as possible) |
