I used to be crazy obsessed with Dragon Ball when I was still in middle school but I haven't really cared for it recently as all they have been doing with is milking it to death. I've seen every episode countless times and even own the entire manga series, the Multiverse is just something fun to do while on the computer. It's looks surprisingly similar to the real DB manga. |

Have you watched Kai? Although it is indeed milking, it is a very nice change. It's nice to see fights actually go through in one episode instead of five, and to have episodes where stuff actually happens in EVERY episode. They literally cut the episode count in HALF. 50%+ of DBZ was filler. It's nice to see it gone, and see the show in it's true glory, instead of inflated. Edited by Polantaris, Oct 16 2010, 12:43 AM.

I'd actually wager that more than 50% of DBZ was filler. And, while Kai is indeed quite nice (I can't wait until they finish it all), a lot of the filler was actually good. All in all, I do prefer Kai/the manga to the original anime. Edited by Mighty Oracle, Oct 16 2010, 12:48 AM.

The filler sometimes was entertaining, but sometimes it was painful. Any fight scene was inflated horribly with the same 10 frames of fists flying around repeated over and over. The actual episodes of filler were okay, but meanwhile they often went in in the middle of no where and sometimes felt misplaced (Like all of Bleach's filler, except for the Bount arc). Who remembers DBZ's Frieza fight? I do. Something like 13 episodes for 5 minutes. Yeah, 5 minutes in 260. I don't know how reduced that is, but I hope it's like...2 now. Well to be fair, lots of anime series use repeat frames, likely due to monetary reasons. Though, I can see how that can get annoying. As for the Freeza saga, I think the entire saga (as in, when Freeza arrives subsequent to the death of the Eldest Namek/Porunga) is about 20 episodes in Kai, a far cry from the 35-40 in the original. Though, they certainly could have shortened it a bit more even with this arrangement, but oh well... Edited by Mighty Oracle, Oct 16 2010, 01:24 AM.

Yeah, a lot of the older animes did. I don't think many newer ones do, however. It honestly got a little annoying after a while because every fight was half fist frames repeating over and over. I think DBZ used it to the extreme, being the reason why most animes don't use it that much anymore (No where near to the extent that DBZ definitely did). Freeza's Saga also included the entire thing while Goku is recuperating however. That was like 25ish episodes. I remember counting the episodes from when Freeza puts the bomb in Namek quoting 5 minutes until it's destruction to when Goku actually defeats Freeza, and it's either 12 or 13 episodes. That's a tad much. It's 5 minutes, not 5 hours, and with all the talking they did during those "5 minutes", I don't know how the original creators didn't think about the absurdity of that entire situation. I remember hearing that in the manga it's a fast fight, actually fitting the 5 minutes. If I remember correctly, they tried to keep the integrity of the Anime while removing the stuff that is indeed filler. Basically, they wanted to keep it true to the actual manga as well as keeping it true to the source material. They wanted to take the filler out, but not parts that are actually part of the anime, like the Freeza fight. Funny side note: Did you know the first credits (And possibly later, I don't remember) of Kai have Launch in the credits, but every single piece of material that included launch was removed as she was always in filler. Yeah, that's about right. I really recommend reading the manga. You can do so online for free.
The source material is the manga. The anime, like most other ones, was a spinoff of the manga, hence all the filler. They decided not to remove said filler, however, so that each episode would still be the standard twenty minutes.
Huh, no I didn't. Interesting. |

I hope AT continues Dragon Ball someday... Maybe not a full saga, but a tournament ending with SSJ3 Goku vs. SSJ3 Vegeta or something. They never did have a fair rematch. |
