I've never had anything major like a root canal done myself, but they give you all kinds of things to deal with the pain so what's the problem? |

I think the root of my fear is when I had to go to a dentist when I was around 3-4 years old, and had one of my teeth pulled with a wrench and absolutely nothing to ease the pain. Dunno about anyone else, but I hate going to doctors in general. |

Maybe the media's portrayal of dentists. Speaking of which, if you want to fear dentists forever, take a look at The Little Shop of Horrors. |

It's a hilarious musical, actually. But damn, Charlie Sheen plays a real bastard. |

Because it's painful and unpleasant. And like Slash said, going to doctors/dentist is never fun. I've had a root canal, and it's extremely painful. Sure they give you laughing gas but it doesn't do much to an adult whereas a child may not feel anything. My biggest "fear" about the dentist is probably the needle they stick in your gum. Sure it doesn't last long but I find that to be more painful than the pulling or filling of teeth. |

They should be giving you more than just laughing gas... |

Whatever anesthetics they use never work entirely for me, so it still hurts a bit. It's also pretty uncomfortable for me, I have a strong gag reflex. Part of it is probably fear, you're strapped down, with someone shoving things in your mouth. I'm sure that activates some primal fear of choking, as well as a modern fear of getting a drill through the roof of your mouth. |

>_> But seriously, the needle doesn't bother me at all, which is odd because I absolutely hate any other needle. I actually like the needle because that means my gums will be 100% numb; I won't feel a thing unless my dentist happens to hit an unaffected nerve. |

It's more of a discomfort than anything else. I've never had an outright painful experience. Yeah, there's the needle in the gums for novocaine, but that's not so bad. |
