http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9217620/In_depth_Google_s_Chrome_OS_and_Samsung_s_Chromebook?taxonomyId=15 It's a Laptop idea developed by Google using their own Chrome OS, that is basically only Internet. That's it. I was curious as to what everyone thinks about this idea. Essentially the entire OS is a fast browser, with private access to some Cloud system per user. The laptop comes with Wifi or Wifi + 3G, with a free 100MB/mo plan if you get a 3G model. I think the idea is nice...but it doesn't really have that many applications, certainly not enough for $400ish, in my opinion. Basically you're paying $400 to use the Internet anywhere you want. I could see this as a nice alternative to a Tablet for access to any of your documents should you use their Cloud system, but outside of the Internet...you can't do anything else. Do people really use Browsers that extensively to justify an entire laptop/os built on JUST Internet? I don't think so, but eh, people buy everything. I feel like if I bought a Chromebook, I'd use it for a week then get bored. The Web isn't all that interesting when you take out all the applications I use it with. |

Only anything you can download into the Chrome Browser. They have some Google AppStore that has a bunch of apps, but if it runs via a Browser it's nothing fantastic. Speaking of, I hope they have some way to fake other browsers. I have sites that don't allow me to get in because I use Chrome. I honestly think the Chromebook is a decent idea, but it really doesn't have many applications outside of Office work, where all you need is a web browser, and some document editors. The 8 second boot time is nice, but really you'll get like 10 on a Windows PC with NOTHING to load, which is what the Chromebook has to load. Plus I'm not sure how many people are going to be fans of not being able to even use IM systems. Sure, there are online ones, but ones like Skype and XFire don't have mobile/net versions last I checked. Oh and did I mention that the entire thing becomes a paperweight if you don't have Wi-Fi nor 3G access for any reason? Edited by Polantaris, Jun 16 2011, 09:43 PM.

A decent idea my ass. The average American citizen does not possess an office job. Many go into retail. |
