http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/07/19/exclusive-fbi-search-warrants-nationwide-hunt-anonymous/ Finally getting some leads, I see. The article also confirms that LulzSec was a splinter group. I believe they also arrested several other people from LulzSec, as it mentions it at the end of the article. |

You're an absolute moron if you believe "Anonymous" to be some kind of group. Edit: Not you >_> Edited by Enrei, Jul 20 2011, 09:37 AM.

It sounds like the "members" did have some common goals, but I doubt they were really organized in any way. Chances are they hacked into each others' computers for stuff, too, lol |

Te media needs to start referring to hacking groups by code names or whatever. These hackers should just be called the "recent paypal hackers" so that we can stop using the dumb ass Anonymous name. Last I checked, Anonymous was just the V for Vendetta mindset, at most. There is no semblance of a group called Anonymous on 4chan or anything like that. I applaud LulzSec for one thing, and one thing only, they used their own damn name. |

I heard that traces of the code used by these people always had the term "Anonymous" in it somewhere; idk if it's how they got the name, though |

The news always has to find a name to refer to anything by, because it's much to hard to go re-explain the issue, it wastes time. So they designate a name, and they refer to them from now on, regardless of how appropriate/true the name is. I believe "Anonymous" is at least one person, but I never really looked into the hacking world enough to know. I remember all kinds of talk about it back when Sony got hacked. The common belief at the time was that Anonymous is one person, and most people just use the name because it's the most widely known in the hacking world, basically stealing the name. It's no different than stealing a killer's technique so that people think it's the same killer and not a different one. Edited by Polantaris, Jul 20 2011, 01:32 PM.

Anonymous is the default username for 4chan, that's all it is in the internet world, and all it should be. |

"Anonymous" is also believed to be a group (Or at least a person) in the hacking world too. Hence the quotations. Whether it actually EXISTS, or if people are just using it because of some 4chan shit, or if any of a million other things, I don't know. You'd probably have to be really a part of the Hacking world to know any of that information. I do know that hacks have been performed with the signature of "Anonymous" being used, though. But I have no idea if that's just bullshit to cover who really did it, or what. Hacking isn't my forte, and I don't want it to be even if I were to be a White Hacker (IE a hacker who just hacks to help people out with their own vulnerabilities). http://www.theatlanticwire.com/technology/2011/07/how-two-lulzsec-hackers-slipped/40215/ I find it hilarious that people with the skills to hack like they did, would make such silly mistakes. |

Anonymous can be anyone. Anyone can hack something and then say anonymous did it. However, the ones who did the larger, more advanced hacks are most likely members of a smaller group who post using the anonymous name. Additionally, there's probably several of these smaller groups who post under the anonymous name and may be loosely connected to each other. And then of course there's the legions of script kiddies who are 1337 hackers after downloading loic. At least that's how I see it. |
