Any mid-Atlantic to New England residents (Lotus, Wolfen, and Increda, I'm looking directly at you) monitoring her? Should it strike New England, it would be the first such hurricane since Bob in 1991.

I am perplexed as to just how few the number of people taking her seriously are.

Kori, that's because you live in a region where hurricanes strike yearly. Most New Englanders probably don't even remember Bob. Increda and I are probably going to be fine (just tropical storms) where we are thanks to the bay as shelter, but my sister in NYC said that a lot of the orientation events at her school were cancelled :(

Unless something crashes into my house, I'm not worried. It's practically impossible to flood here, because our entire house was built on sand. When building it, my father put regular soil on top and what not, did what was needed, but under the surface it's all sand, so it never floods here.

Though I heard stores were littered with people going crazy. I don't think 4 gallons of milk when you normally drink 1/2 is going to help you when it hits.

I'm aware of it, looking it up every now and then, but I'm not too worried about it. It can get bad, but hey. It's not like I haven't been in a hurricane before.

Prolly just to be 'precautious', I might pack a bag of things tonight and be ready to go to my cousin's house not too far away. If not and I stay on campus, my portables are charged!

Edit: Darnit, Polan, that reminds me. I should've gotten some apple sauce. XD I might get bored with graham crackers and peanut butter.

Increda, you might have some luck at the quick marts either in the JC or over by Southside? Or there's the Giant across the street...

My area has predicted:
45-75MPH Winds
12 Inches of Rain, which if we get, is the most we'll have gotten in over 50 years from one storm.

You know what's funny? We have a giant lake nearby...and right now...they should be draining that in preparation for the storm. Guess what they aren't doing. Guess what will happen as a result. >_< Assholes.

I'm not sure about Virginia, but I do know that New Jersey has recently been witness to extensive rainfall. Thus, I think Lotus will bear the brunt of it, especially since the heaviest precipitation will be confined upstream, or to left of the cyclone center. Wind damage will be maximized along the eastern semicircle, so if anyone is going to be in that, heads up.

Also, it is important to emphasize that, even though Irene has weakened a bit more than expected today, she is a very large storm. Even if most of you only experience winds of 60 mph, with already saturated ground, it will not take much to topple trees and power lines. I'd do what you can to prepare for several days or so without power.

Yes, that is the real kicker, unfortunately, and why I actually don't think it's a good thing that the US hasn't been hit by a hurricane in three years. Complacency and apathy will inevitably lead to more monetary costs in future hurricane events.
