I'm playing Tales of Symphonia for the first time, and...

I can't help but notice similarities in it and other media.

For example, in some ways it reminds me of Golden Sun. The character models, the random emoticons that pop up above the character's heads, and most of all, the abundance of puzzles. They also feel fairly GS-like. And I can totally see these characters being in Golden Sun games, not to mention it looks like there are a total of eight party members. I'm also drawing some similarities between this and FMA.

And finally, a similarity to FFX.

Am I alone in this? This isn't merely grasping at straws; they genuinely seem and in some ways, feel similar. Don't spoil anything past the point I just got past (check the second spoiler tag if you want to know), however.

You might be grasping a little with the FMA bit, but the FFX comparison sounds dead-on to me.

I'll leave it at that, so as not to spoil the plot.
Symphonia's plot was definitely okay. (I am very hard to please.)
Have fun with the game!

Oh I am. Sometimes I don't want to quit, because the plot is getting really interesting now. >_>

I'm not sure why everyone RAAAAVED about Symphonia when it came out. It's quite good, but I dunno. It did at least somewhat popularize the Tales series over here, so I can't complain.

Abyss was definitely better, though, and I hear that Vesperia was even better than that.

I played Eternia, and while I really liked it, it was HARD.

There are all these crazy connections between historical Alchemy and Fullmetal! Crazy!

Materia doesn't even function like the Philosopher's Stone, if I remember correctly. I think the "historical" Stone was considered to take many forms, not just an actual stone.
Thinking about it, Colette could be considered a "philosopher's stone" since

This isn't really related to anything I said in my first post, but since we're on the subject...why isn't the character in the second slot moving in-battle? I can't control him/her and s/he just stands there for the entire battle. This has been happening ever since I got to Tethe'alla. I also don't understand what the "P1/P2/P3/P4" is supposed to mean that randomly appears above enemies.

You can play Tales of with multiplayer on, which you might have done accidentally. Check the AI settings in battle, or whatever they're called.

No because most people like the Symphonia story a lot whereas my reaction was "it was all right I suppose"

^Yeah, that was my reaction. It wasn't bad, but...eh. Nothing spectacular.
