I'm half surprised that Nintendo isn't doing well financially right now. On one hand, they kind of bungled the 3DS (too expensive initially, weak game launch, terrible battery life), but on the other hand, I'm surprised that phones are direct competition for traditional video game consoles. They're phones that happen to play some games, not dedicated game systems. Most of them don't even have proper control layouts, and even if I had a smartphone, it would never replace an actual game system for me.
Take it from me, someone who has a touch-screen only phone...you can't play any real games on them. You cover half the screen with your fingers.

Well, at least the 3DS' launch isn't as awful as the DS and PSP's were. The 3DS has sold a LOT more than the DS had by this point, and both last gen's handhelds didn't get any good games on their library for a loooong time. The 3DS at least has a few solid titles worth playing (even if most of them currently are ports or remakes) and the new AAA titles are just around the corner. We have Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 literally just around the corner, and a slew of other titles that look like they'll be great, such as Luigi's Mansion 2, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Animal Crossing, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy (still don't get what's up with the name though), etc. etc. While the 3DS' launch was hardly stellar, it was at least better than the DS' or PSP's. XD And they went on to be the most successful handhelds of all time...

You guys are really looking at this the wrong way:

First Annual Loss in 30 Years
Meaning that for 30 years, they've been okay. One year of loss is not going to take them down; Hopefully, however, Catbread will be right, and they'll step it up.

From reading various reports, it's very clear that Nintendo understands their mistakes and that's not going to happen anymore. Iwata said there will be "no gaps between releases" which is a good thing if they can pull it off.

Kachou on!
I won't believe that until I see some serious improvements to the Wii U.

I showed the article in the first post to a friend, and he responded by showing me these links:

http://www.zeldainformer.com/2011/10/nintendo-is-losing-money-who-cares-stock-jumps-in-value-by-6.html

tl;dr version: It's the falling value of the yen that is mostly hurting Nintendo, and they show signs of actually progressing.

I'm surprised nobody pointed this out earlier.
