Welcome to the board, Juliet+Juliet !

I absolutely agree that we need more shows like Carol, and, yes, Bad Girls. Maybe if they weren't such a rarity, the rest of us wouldn't be so obsessed about them, joining message boards, writing fanfiction...! :silly
Hi, mlbach and thanks for the warm welcome! I am very new to Bad Girls and the whole fandom thing. I am amazed at all the fan videos and fan fiction. In fact my partner and I just discovered it about a year ago! We are so into it that we are going to the Bad Girls Convention. Is anyone else on this board going? x

A Bad Girls Convention--!! I didn't know there was such a thing :o

I'm across the pond, so I won't be going. Will some of the actors be there?

This is exciting. Have fun!

And please report back with details. :D

I've had a new thought about Carol. I was discussing it with a friend and she said it was an abusive relationship. And I think she's right. And that because it's between women, we excuse Carol more, who is grooming and using Therese. What do you think?

The night that Therese is invited over and then ignored really angers me.

Maybe the great cast and cinematic qualities make us overlook that?

Do we really rally for them to be together or are we thinking: hope Carol gets cast off with Therese's alice band!

It's also made me paranoid about possibilities in my own work... but I'm hoping people here feel sympathetic towards Nikki and Helen. If Nikki had been the more conflicted and less reticent one, would that relationship have been abusive?
(This might be helpful to help me with editing my sequel) Thanks for your thoughts!

Whenever there is a difference in power in a relationship, whether actual or perceived, there is potential for abuse. In Nikki and Helen's case, Helen is Nikki's jailer. In the case of Carol and Therese, Carol is older and more experienced, has a lot more money, status--and Therese wants her. And Carol wants Therese. Depending on who wants whom more, that would create another power dynamic.
Helen (mostly) dealt with the power discrepancy by (mostly) refusing to act on her feelings, and then quitting her job.
I think Carol tried to minimize the power difference when she called to apologize to Therese, but then reinforced it when she bought Therese the new suitcase and camera, items that Therese couldn't afford on her own. (Although ultimately that camera enabled Therese to get a good job, helping to minimize the power difference.)
As far as I can remember, there wasn't anything that Carol did that I might consider abusive that wasn't preceded by a major confrontation or shock, or that she doesn't make amends for.

I've been away from the board for ages, far too much hard work over the last year so I'm going to enjoy a bit of time now getting back on and finding some interesting threads/stories.

On this one - Carol - I have been meaning to see that since it came out so I'll try to see in in the next week or so and come back on this thread. I qiute like that Sarah Paulson actually! She was one of those women that I could just tell was gay for no specific reason. I think I was watching American Horror Story and didn't know a thing about her and suddenly she was on everything I saw (American Crime Story etc). I looked her up out of curiosity and must say I was pleased to have my suspicions confirmed! I was a bit surprised about Holland Taylor (another one I was suspicious of when she was in The L word!) but what a lovely couple they make.

Oh and the bg convention! I saw some photos on Simone Lahbib's twitter and it looked like a lot of fun. Great that they will have raised good money for the charity.

G3 Curtain and Duvet!
I found this film riveting in more ways than one...Micro expressions ...that blink and you've missed the jist of it ...kept me focused in a totally unexpected way...and yet it felt completely familiar...and welcome.

Women are in the main subtle...a stolen glance...a fleeting smile...Body language hosts any entire dictionary. Helen and Nikki...cowed at times by circumstance...interpret their attraction with little effort. Every relationship is unbalanced in some way...We lead the dance...then follow her lead...

I recommended it to a young friend who likened it to paint drying...I guess you had to be there.

I've heard from some readers that I use dots... to pare down the easy...the obvious...to expect from the reader a certain level of comprehension...which some found refreshing...while others lost the plot.

This film speaks directly to me and upon a second viewing will yield new insights.
I know a monochrome Carol in vivid colour...Can't ask more than that...
