This is going back some time in the timeline of this discussion, but it got me thinking.

(JAMBF) - Feb 2006
The only things we know for certain are the date on Nikki's mugshot on her folder - 6 May 1997 and that surely would have been put on there when she first came in on remand. (Old Bodybag is always in reception taking photos of the new arrivals and "peering up their smelly bottoms"!)

That doesn't necessarily dictate how long they've been in prison (whether on remand or not). As anyone who's had time added to their sentence with a new change has their pics retaken. I'm thinking in particular to Pat Kerrigan in series 7; because she's changed prisons and had to have a picture redone, and the date of arrival to Larkhall put on her file. She'd already been serving a Life Sentence at her previous prison - ran the Lifer's Unit, according to Fenner.

When I think of the judge's statement with regards to Nikki's conviction change and subsequent time served. The appellate judges decided to reduce her conviction to manslaughter carrying a term of three years, time already served. Now, my take on this, is that she'd served that time and more, but given as the max time is three yrs they would have only taken into account that she'd already served at least that much time. As folks have already mentioned I'd reckon it was probably anywhere from 3 1/2 to 4 1/2. I'm inclined to think the latter, though. Just a feeling.
Kim: It's the 21st Century - a 15-year-old using a toothbrush to masturbate over her best friend shouldn't be that big a deal.

ETA: Abzug: where would you go with the effed-up menuing system for S5? It wasn't a bad idea but the execution of all those submenus was amateurish at best & very slow. I think it was S5--the cctv-camera-theme, right? Anyway, we've moved indoors into a closed system. Looked at from that pov--and in light of developments in later series--I'm not sure I see it as a very useful metaphor for what the show's trying to say so much as what the menuing system inadvertently says about the show.

Well, from a user interface perspective, I absolutely loathed the S5 dvd menu (and I design UIs for a living, so I spend a fair amount of my day thinking about usability). However, I kind of liked it, symbolically-speaking, because of the theme of surveillance and total takeover of the evil regime by the end of the season. The sense that the evil, we're-watching-you regime is always in control in the end. The strange thing was, moving indoors, as you put it, winds up giving the impression of MORE space, because they actually used the full set interior, rather than just the animated closed off hallway/cell door used on the earlier dvds.

But on the other hand, I kind of agree with you what I think you're saying: that the simplistic elegance of the earlier seasons' dvd interface reflects the subtlety of the show itself, while starting S5, they start hammering their points home, in more of a soapy way, and the heavy-handedness of the cctv camera thing emphasizes that.

Nicely put, I agree with your ambivalence. And thanks for cleaning up my post, the ideas were half-there but I was fatigued & you're right, they came out fuzzy. Thankfully you know what I'm on about. Congrats on having survived the week, nwo go unwind & have some fun while the weather holds. :hug2 --e

Thanks sister, you have NO idea. The ups and downs I went through this week were really mind-boggling. Luckily I've got a 3-day weekend in front of me. :party

well maybe in the states Ekny u mite only get 3 years coz of overcrowding (unless she was in Texas in which case Bush woulda had her gassed ;) )but here its usually ten. I had a freind who got 4 years for GBH and nobody died and he had to serve 3 and a half before he got out. I think the 5 years that people often think she has served (wothout workin it all out properly) is a much more realistic assumption.

Barbara Hunt's original sentence was 3 yrs for manslaughter,- mercy killing her husband. Sentencing probably varies due to the political climate of the times. Remembering these early seasons of BG's were written roughly 6 yrs ago!

I also found an interesting website on Interpretations on Life Sentences around the world (and how rules are often changing) - www.answers.com/topic/life-sentence

I think Nikki served 3 & a half yrs in prison. :)

Also I have a question. Does anyone know if Zandra received extra time for doing a runner from the abortion clinic?

Zandra didnt get no xtra time coz they covered it all up dint they? i dont think by the time dominic came clean Helen could do much about it.

I've been thinking about this for a while. I think Shed Productions made a cock up with the Zandra storyline. If Zandra's original sentence was 10 mths for credit card fraud, & did not get extra time for doing a "bunk" then she should of been released shortly after giving birth - around S2, ep5. But I guess Shed played for high drama - dying of brain cancer. :(

Zandra was in for credit card fraud? I thought she was in for something drug related, and I don't recall them ever mentioning how long her sentence was. Do you know which episode this was in?

Interesting. Well, regardless, even if her initial sentence was 10 months, her escape attempt and the business up on the roof surely got her at least a few extra months, so I don't think it undermines the show's timeline at all.

Jul '99: S1E10--Monica is released

Having just rewatched this ep, I have to say they were remarkably good with timeline stuff in S1. There's a reference to Dominic's birthday, and him being a Cancer, and lo and behold, Cancers are born between June 23 and July 23. :)

Wow abzug! That just shows how good your Timeline was then, because I don't remember Dominic's birthday being one of the points of reference in your original workings out - so you must just reached the conclusion of Ep 10 being July from what you'd worked out for Eps 1 - 9 then! Well done! But you know I've always had a fondness for your Timeline anyway! :hug2
