Sugar Rush, any good?
Has anyone seen this show? I just read a review online and it actually sounded quite good. The dvd on Amazon UK is ridiculously cheap (like 8 pounds or something), so I was actually considering buying it, but wanted to check here first.

I bought and watched it. I liked it but be forwarned that there is nothing politically correct about it. It is a half hour comedy/drama series seen from the view point of a 15 year old lesbian and all the angst that goes along with it.

Wasn't that impressed with it....typical UK Channel 4 production... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Btw, the book's definitely worth reading esp if you're interested in YA lesbian stuff--more depth to the characters, more credible (and far less cartoony!) plotting than the show. This bit I quoted is characteristic; also, look at how each paragraph builds from the one before it. Very nice (and very funny) piece of writing. Author is Julie Burchill.

----

We walked to Preston High like that--niggling and bickering and bitching. It's a pretty obvious thing to say, but if you observe like ninety-nine out of a hundred pairs of teenage best friends you'll find them spending most of their public time together like that. Why is it?--is it because we don't want people to accuse us of being in love, or gay, or both, or is it because, and this is quite sad too, we've seen so much of our parents niggling and bickering and bitching at each other that we think it's the grown-up way to have a relationship?

It's so different from when you're little, and you can just go up to some kiddy you like the look of and say, "I like deer," and, bingo, if she likes deer too you've hit the jackpot and you'll be really solid for the next five years. And then the hormones hit and suddenly there's a domestic every day--"Ooh, why did you tell Hannah I liked deer? You KNOW only wildebeests are cool! And now they think I'm a nerd like you!" Or, tearfully, "You only pretended to like deer all these years--if you REALLY did you'd get your eyebrow pierced too on Saturday, and not care what your mum said!" And in the end you just think, "Oh sodding deer, I wish I'd never liked them. They've ruined everything!"

We were all bitched out by the time we got to the school--I was definitely thinking of Preston as "the school" rather than "school", which must show pretty good adjustment or rabid fatalism, I don't know which--and mooched into the art rooms, but even if we'd have been halfway through the knock-down drag-out fight of a lifetime we'd still have strolled in looking like two halves of the same smile because the first rule of best-friendship is SHE MAY BE A BITCH BUT SHE'S MY BITCH: YO, DON'T DISS MY BITCH!

I loved Sugar Rush. And I am thrilled that they are making something like that for teenagers. I wish I had it when I was growing up. Series 2 in starting in a week. Can't wait.

The music is brilliant, the actors, the script. I don't even care how bad the book upon which it is based is.

Interesting as well to compare it to South of Nowhere.

What did you find bad about the book? Curious.

ekny,

I didn't find anything good or bad about the book as I haven't read yet. But the reviews I read about it were slating it. Anyway, I did plan to read it one day, though I have to say Julie Burchill is not the most likeable person in the world. But regardless of how she is in person, if that's what her mind comes up with, then ...what the heck.

Comparison is not very good, but imagine what would you feel if Star Jones would write a book about lesbian teens and then the book would be made into a great TV series!

I should have put it differently: How good or bad the book is had no influence on my enjoying the show very much.

Hiya munky! Most authors I've met are not easy to get on with. I think it's the crap money, but it's possible they're mainly just cranks. Presumably comes from being Unheard or badly socialized, no idea. Sarah Waters is media-savvy & seems entirely pleasant, but then life's been reasonably kind to her, from all external appearances. Or maybe she just has good character & Burchill doesn't.

There's an excerpt from the book above; I think it's very well-written, myself, esp for a Y/A book where getting voice right is quite difficult. You should be able to tell from the excerpt if it's your sort of thing. I found the writing v consistent.

Sorry, out of media loop. No idea who SJ is.

I wasn't criticizing, only curious. If the author's made personal appearances or done interviews & is a twat, then I'm sure that puts people off.

It's not her in person that I'm talking about as I've never met her. It's some of her ideas as expressed in her newspaper columns.
One of which is that the Soviet Union was great (she's never renounced that idea). She should be shot on the spot for that, like the millions who died in her dear old Soviet Union and the former communist block countries.
She's just an idiot sometimes and worse, often times, she seems to be an idiot just to enjoy the attention from the media.
But she's got her brilliant moments so she can be forgiven for having her utter divvy moments.

I am shocked that you don't know who Star Jones is. You're kidding right? Just in case:

Speaking of Sarah Waters, which I did meet, she's laid back and easy going and interested in other people. If you didn't know who she was, you'd never guess. Plus she's smart and educated and would never come up with stupid things a la JB.

Oh, she's a personality. Too bad. Thx for the Wiki link. I'm surprised given her ostensible straightness she did such a good job with the book. Most of all I'm glad I didn't have a clue as to who she was when I got the book, otherwise--knowing that stuff would've put me right off her & possibly it as well, yeah.

No tv. Don't care. Amazed this aspect of Wiki has turned into something like a halfway house between Who's Who & the Sun. Anybody who's nobody can be there. Finger-in-cheek-popping-noise!

About this I am sheerly envious. Was it a reading/signing or some work-related thing?? --e.

Maybe it's from the affair with Charlotte Raven that she got the inspiration from. Though I seem to remember reading somewhere that she had some experiences like those in Sugar Rush.
Anyway, I'll read the book when I have a chance and judging from the excerpt and the TV show, I'll probably enjoy it.
What gets me is that she doesn't need to be like she is sometimes. She's intelligent enough to get the attention anyway. One of her comments when faced with the popularity of the TV show was to say in a boasting manner something along the lines of "Ohh, I wrote in a week, no sweat at all".
Which reminded me of Sylvester Stallone:
"Yo. I'm astounded by people who take 18 years to write something. That's how long it took that guy to write Madame Bovary." "And was that even on the best-seller list? No. It was a lousy book, and it made a lousy movie."

WOW, I admire you for no TV.

Sarah Waters... well, last year I was at a Lesbian Arts Festival with my friends, it was the club night at the end of the festival. Things is, we got to be friends as a result of a forum that sprung after Tipping The Velvet was shown on TV (much like this one). More than that, that forum was our coming out moment.
So out of nowhere I decided that we have to tell SW this. I don't know why I was so determined, it was after all 3 years down the line, but anyway, I went to her and told her all that and what it meant to me especially. It was almost surreal talking to the person who made it happen while at the same time feeling like I was talking to an old friend.
My friends came and joined in and we had a really good laugh. We talked about TTV and the myriad of meanings and potential twists and about her popularity amongst straight people.

She is such not a diva and she's genuine and non-assuming. She was there all night, enjoying herself like the rest of us, on the dance floor, talking to people, having a snog with her gf., you know, normal stuff.

Yes I agree Julie Burchill's writings are totally contradictory with moments of great wit of a biting kind and a brilliant turn of phrase. She first came to public attention as a rock journalist if I remember correctly. She is a bit of an attention getter.

When I've read some of her pieces I've found myself alternatively agreeing & disagreeing with her. Intriguing but frustrating writer.

She did kind of claim to be able to be some kind of lesbian spokesperson when she had that lesbian relationship a few years back.

Saw eps 1&2 of the new Sugar Rush last night, very nice, feels even livelier & tighter than S1, though I suspect it'll slow down to more misery when Sugar gets loose again. There's a spanking scene that's really very funny and does not resolve how I'd have expected; at any rate, it would never ever air here, L-word faux-liberalism or not. Not between a barely-of-age teen lesbian & a grown woman, it's just too far afield for us poor Americans.

I remain convinced the UK is approximately 25 years ahead of us in terms of certain types of progressive cultural nonchalance.

I was gluttonous like ekny and watched 1&2 last week, so it's ep3 tonight. I can't wait for Sugar to be on the loose again. It would be fun.

The parents are hilarious as usual.
