groovygirl PostPosted: Mon Feb 06, 2006 3:48 pm Anybody else watch this show? It's about a family that moves from Ohio to LA. The main storyline is the daughter coming to terms with her sexuality. I had to underline that because it still makes me happy. The season finale was on Friday, and it was a great eppy. Even though it's about teens, plenty of 20 and 30 somethings watch it. Sorry, I believe it's only available on U.S. tv. With the sucess it's had, though, it won't be long before other countries pick it up. _________________ n&haddict PostPosted: Mon Feb 06, 2006 5:03 pm No I've never heard of the show. What network or cable channel is it on? What day and time slot is the show aired? _________________ abzug PostPosted: Mon Feb 06, 2006 5:43 pm The N -- its Nickelodeon's teen channel. They also show DeGrassi etc. I think the show is decent, in a teen-show, after-school special kind of way. And the two girls actually KISSED this past week, which they NEVER would have shown back when I was a teenager. In fact, I remember an episode of "Picket Fences" where two teenage girls kissed, and they didn't show the actual kiss--just turned out the lights and told us it happened. _________________ ekny PostPosted: Mon Feb 06, 2006 8:56 pm abzug wrote: The N -- its Nickelodeon's teen channel. Yes, I agree--as you & I've discussed, it's very much in the tradition of an Afterschool Special: it's got lots of (typically-) unusually attractive SoCal teens and parents talking with painful sincerity--a lot ('our' family's transplated from Ohio, they can't help it) about How They Feel About Things; every show has a little moral tagline attached to it, etc. It's so pc I wanna go huff some reality tv after seeing it sometimes just to stop that goody-goody feeling crawling down my spine. Most of its characters have the depth of a piece of shirt cardboard, the writing's clunky, if not downright awkward, and it's definitely got made-for-tv level production values. Given its avg 22-min/ep length, there's a lot of exposition to put up with every episode; they've only really got 5-7 minutes for each major character. Given all that... it's also surprisingly enjoyable--in part *because* we pretty much know where it's going. The 2 lead girls are both well-cast & they both--especially Spencer (what's her name, Gabrielle-something, Christian, I think?) --*feel* real. Her performance is especially credible and very likeable--she's by far the best thing going in S of N. Far as my memory takes me, this is the first time I've ever seen a television show conceived around the idea of having at least one, & possibly two lead storylines about lesbian teenagers--not a side-story, not a Very Special Episode Of, but as the foundation premise of the show. For that alone, I'd be watching. It's also seems clear to me that, thus far, the writers' most genuine investment *is* in the lesbian storyline, in getting it right--it's not simply pc; it's a lot more 3-dimensional than any of the other storylines or characters. Also unusual. Donna Deitch directed the first episode; I believe Rose Troche is executive producer or summat like that. Meanwhile... I'm kinda enjoying South of North despite myself. And I do have to give it an extra gold star for Good Intentions. If you look at the chats on TWoP, you'll see there's a very distinct contrast between viewers of all persuasions who hate the LW & those who love S of N for inverse reasons. SofN might be squeaky-clean & fuzzy to a fault, but at least it doesn't make me feel somehow complicit in my own aesthetic degradation. ---- eta: saw first half of the Lexicon of Love degrassi ep. Found it so clumsy have upgraded eval of SoN accordingly: SoN looks like genius compared to this deG business. I'm sorry, I do respect our Canadian friends (they needn't respect us & I don't blame em...), but their tv & movies are weirdly dated. This seemed to me a good example: it felt clunky, behind the times (and badly timed), just kind of slow & embarrassing. Like a standup comic who waits at the end of each joke to see if the audience laughs, & how much. I'll let someone else comment on the rest of the ep since I didn't see it. Maybe it struck a blow for lesbian teens everywhere, I wouldn't know. Having seen it--I'd, sure, be curious to see the rest of the ep, but couldn't care less about jumping into the show, say, & following the characters. Yawn. |

I actually watch this show. I think for a teen show it is quite good. The story lines are decent and do not strictly revolve around the gay issue. Plus when the gay story line does come up they show it in a positive light. Normality comes to mind in a description of how the issue is treated. I think this is something that a lot of those of us who are gay long for in the real world. To be considered normal. Very well built show! |

I don't know if this was discussed previously. I have just discovered South of Nowhere. It reminded me of Helen/ Nikki story development, but set in a Beverly Hills High School. Below is glimpse for the show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTeC6BEMgTs |

I agree Lis I doubt it will ever get shown on Australian Tv. and if it did it would be in the wee hours of the night like BG was. I also discovered this show on you tube. There are some good clips on there. |
