Lara Cazalet appeared in two episodes as did Simone Lahbib in an earlier series. _________________ munky PostPosted: Sat May 20, 2006 10:02 pm I loved the Judge as well. I was so pleased to see Dominic (Martin Shaw's son) in BG. But it got bad reviews as well, on the lines of: it doesn't happen like that within the judiciary in the UK. Daah, it's a TV drama not a documentary. I quite liked No Angels and Sugar Rush. But I'm disgressing. _________________ richard PostPosted: Sun May 21, 2006 8:26 am Hi munky. I'm interested in what you said about the bad reviews for Judge John Deed. The content of it sounds like the sort of thing they have said about Bad Girls. Probably the real reason is that, like BG, it has a very political edge about it and the writer will incorporate controversial material in the storylines. What is interesting is that, in reality, the judiciary are becoming increasingly at loggerheads with the government where art foreshadows reality. A couple of standout episodes is the way it referred to someone held under the Prevention of Terror Act and another which exposed reality TV for what it is. The writer of the series, G F Newman , has got is exactly right in this quote. "Judges' influence on politics can be enormous. It is a role they are finding themselves increasingly forced into in the absence of effective political opposition. Judges observe the rule of law and want effective government to pass laws they can enact. But they are currently finding a plethora of law coming out - much of which simply doesn't make sense. _________________ munky PostPosted: Sun May 21, 2006 11:16 am Quote: Probably the real reason is that, like BG, it has a very political edge about it and the writer will incorporate controversial material in the storylines. What is interesting is that, in reality, the judiciary are becoming increasingly at loggerheads with the government where art foreshadows reality Exactly. Before seeing Judge John Deed I didn't pay much attention to the way the judiciary works in this country. But since watching it and reading a few books on it, I am convinced of what you say, that that is why it got bad reviews: because it really tells a lot of thruth. That's why the public liked it as well. We all need to believe that there are Helen Stewarts and John Deeds out there who fight for the common good. The struggle with the many, contradictory laws, the struggle with the Home Secretary, the struggle with the old boys network in the judiciary. The Judge is a Helen Stewart with many more years in service so a bit less naive, with less to loose and with a bit more power. I liked the way they didn't make him a saint either. _________________ richard PostPosted: Sun May 21, 2006 12:13 pm Great, munky. Another Judge John Deed fan and your comparison and contrasts with Helen Stewart fits the bill exactly. It is strange that BBC have at last noticed the build up of viewer interest in the series so that the episodes are being plugged a bit more and, hence the recent release of the pilot episode and first series on DVD. Once again, the viewers are more perceptive than the critics. |

So did anyone watch NSL last night? ETA: I was just looking at New Street Law stuff and came across Lara's IMDb page. Says she was born in '71, which means she was 28 when she started on Bad Girls!! It thought she was so much younger. I thought she was barely in her twenties when in BG! |

Is anyone watching NSL week-by-week? Is it right that the next episode is on on Monday 26th March (that's one week today)? So it's not on at all this week? |

I saw Lara recently in a gay film short called, "Scarred". She played a photographer and best friend of the lead character. The film was part of Logo's 'The Click List'. It was good to see her. Even better is that I have a place to post that I saw her.
