Quality's as good as the best of the best of what I've seen recently, couldn't agree more. Of course... for best cop-show... nothing beats The Wire. Which you still gotta see. <nudgenudge, winkwink>

Wait, didn't I tell you? I'm already on episode 6 or 7 of the first season. I'm totally loving it.

Did you see Piper Perabo on House last night? Looks like it may be a recurring role?

Ohhh.. I was just browsing Kissing Fingertips and came across their review of a “lesbian episode” on La Femme Nikita (http://www.kissingfingertips.com/nikita.html). It was such a hit here back in the day. There are actually three TV series that were cult around here as I grew up. The first one was a French show called Ellen et le Garcons (or something..),I think we all watched it in grades 1-3. Then there came the Beverly Hills 90210 madness and it went totally past me, thank God, but kids of 8-14 were die-hard fans. And the third TV series that a lot of young people watched was La Femme Nikita, I can’t say I personally am particularly enjoying this kind of shows, but it was very big around here. So anyway, and only now I found out there actually a lesbian episode on the show! Must ask a friend to dig out a tape of it for me.

There’s something about Peta Wilson that makes my gaydar go off. And that was even before she played a lesbian and tried to seduce Ellen Barkin in Mercy. Sigh.

Oh! I just remembered another show I watched as a child! Moonlighting. I’m not sure I understood a thing but I think I liked it. :D

[I’m definitely having a Blondes’ Day. Peta Wilson? Ellen Barkin? Cybill Shepherd?]

"The amazing Mrs Pritchard" was another show I liked, penned by Sally Wainwright of BG fame. It was only 6 eps and ended on a cliff hanger. It's a pity due to low ratings it won't be back.

I just checked the TV schedule and 'The Amazing Mrs Pritchard' is being re-broadcast starting tonite at 9pm on TVO.

So, have we discussed Friday Night Lights at all, anywhere on the board? Shall I wax poetic about how I, me, myself, am watching a football show set in Texas (sorry to the boardmembers who hail from there but--you know...)--no, let me amend that, a Texas *high-school* show, no less--with Christians who pray at school football games? A deeply heterosexual TV show which should have nothing, nothing whatever that I care about in the least little way, nothing to offer me... but which is so remarkably well-made I can't stop watching it--and admiring it?

I've tried, one-on-one, to convince some board friends to see it, and I'm making headway, I know it, but it's too slow. So I'm going public.

Now, I haven't seen Season 2. I read one spoiler (god I hate spoilers!) and thought--figures, here's one of the best shows I've seen since Deadwood got canned & some network moron has it jumping the shark 10 minutes into Season 2. Maybe it won't play as badly as I think. But Season 1 is really... art. There are places it's predictable. Places it's a little sentimental. A few characters are pretty boring to me, & one of the actors is not really great with the accent thing in a big way (even my tainted yankee ears can pick this up). But--there are not many of these places, overall. And its depiction of a solid heterosexual marriage is perhaps unrealistically sunny even when it's being gritty, but who cares? What a convincing couple these people make, Tami & coach. I mean, I *like* these characters, they come off as totally believable.

And yes, there are some awfully hot women in this show, again, in a real-life type way. I won't say little Julie does much for me since a) she doesn't and b ) she's a minor, but her mom? Sheesh. If there's a triple-platinum MILF award, surely this woman should get it. (And hey, when's the last time I waxed on about this sort of thing, huh? Alright then.) And, a word about Tyra: sheeit. All that character and about 50 IQ points on everyone around her. Plus the, yknow, body thing. Frankly, between Tami & Tyra... I don't know which makes me more bent, & really, really don't care.

The point is, if you have serious reservations about watching a high-school football show set in Christian Texas--and boy, did I ever--you need to just get over that & give it a few episodes (in order, from Season 1.1 on). The camerawork is *wonderful*. The lighting & the sets--man. You could weep over some of the details in these sets, they're so painfully accurate. Ok, so I got all waxy anyway. Sue me. But watch the show.

eta: Hey, don't take my word for it: it's won a buttload of awards, all important--multiple Emmys, American Film Institute, a Peabody Award, Writers Guild of America. Etc.

Right now, I'm enthusing about the recent 'Life on Mars' series which has the unique distinction of being both popular and quality drama and a shining light amongst the formula dross Brit TV is overloaded with.

The ostensible topic, a recreation of 1970's Brit cop drama isn't likely to grab attention and, for me, it isn't being a 'guy' thing for 'action' drama. the twist in is is the playoff between the modern 'politically correct' policeman (John Simm) against the old fashioned very politically incorrect cop (Philip Glenister) , put simply a playoff of brains against gut instinct. To make a real twist on this is that the 'modern policeman' is in reality unconscious in a hospital bed after a road accident and the subtlety is that you are never quite sure if this is really in 1973 or a reflection of the man's brain functioning, especially as the 'present' keeps leaking back into the past. both acting and writing is first class and you see traces of droll humour (example, the policeman seeing Marc Bolan in a club and telling him to be careful driving, especially Minis) (For non Brit readers, this refers to how the lead singer of T Rex came to die in a car accident) The whole thing is a very much expanded version of David Bowie's song 'Life on Mars.' It gives me the feeling that Bowie (and other musicians of the era) must have allowed his music to be featured as the series is an honest tribute/ expansion on his theme. The 2 series are out on DVD.

It's sequel is starting to run, set in 1981, called 'Ashes to Ashes' with a nod again to Bowie which features Keeley Hawes whom readers will surely recall from 'Tipping the Velvet.' The whole thing is one of those multilayers creations which I love so much and has so much resonance of how our past informs the present. The first episode featuring the archetypal 'yuppie' shows how much that creaction is shown in the most disgusting reality of present day 'ripoff culture.'

Lost is certainly keeping my interest so far. Now we know who four of the Oceanic six are (not counting Aaron). Every episode is worth a few wtf's and holy sh*ts, especially the one that featured Sayid.

I've now discovered the show that comes on after it, Eli Stone, and have caught the last two episodes. I like its quirkiness and the lead character really draws me in. (my daughter tell me the actor who plays Eli is one of Angelina's exes).

1) Anyone seen "Skins", on UK TV? My understanding is there's a bisexual male teen character, but zero lesbian content. Is that correct? (And by the way: how is it...?)

2) I have NO idea how I missed the fact that Joss Whedon is doing a 7-episode pilot-cum-intro/S1 for a new TV show with Eliza Dushku. Having found this out, I can't say my concentration was great for the rest of the day. It's old news http://www.variety.com/article/VR111797513...egoryid=14&cs=1 but probably the strike eclipsed it. Dorothy Snarker posted abt it in a Nov. 2007 AE-blog; regular updates on the Joss Whedon news-site. This will be on Fox (believe it or not), supposedly in the fall--no idea if strike has set it back til next spring. Called Dollhouse.

YES SQUEE ALRIGHT YES YES I AM EXCITED DAMMIT

So, I'm just gonna mention I started S2 of Friday Night Lights with a lot of trepidation, because I'd read from various sources online that it had immediately jumped the shark in ep1 bec of the Tyra/'Lance' subplot. And although that plot is definitely not my favorite, after 8 eps I can't say I'm still having major problems with it, oddly enough (once you throw out the question of Tyra's motivation for her choice to hide things): I like the actors & think they're wasted on this nonsense, but my liking for them overwhelms my dislike for the network for coming up with such a dumb idea. And I find the Carlotta/Matt thing way more boring. Anyhow. Point is: I don't know why I listen to other people sometimes, really. It's SO easy to say negative stuff about a show without backing it up. This show continues to rock. The depth of characterization, generally, is way way beyond most anything I've seen for a contemporary show. If it has its weak points, they're almost all forgivable--mainly because the damn thing really IS well-intentioned, so... how can you hold that against the people producing it or acting in it? And it has many, many strong points. I *like* this show, I enjoy myself when I'm watching it (and sort of marvel at that--because my *god* is it straight), & I think better of people after having seen it. How many shows can you say that about?

ps: I still have to watch with subtitles. Sorry to my friends in Texas but... they slur a lot on here & there's a fair amt of overlapping dialogue. Sigh. Woe is me. Texas, Baltimore... where will I strike out next.

Breaking Bad!
Totally awesome. I've never heard of it until just recently. We have been weeding through our emmy consideration dvds, that's how we found it. Mad Men has already won a bunch of awards. It was good. Breaking Bad was in the same packaging. We watched six episodes in two evenings. It is very good. We joke because Breaking Bad is being promoted by Sony as a Sony Television product (its shows on AMC), and the tv program is far far better than most Sony features. The plot concept is chalk full of juxtapositions of morality and modern living. The creater, writer, director describes as a tragedy masked as a comedy, a story of a man who is dying of cancer who's cookin' crystal meth. I know, doesn't sound like a show worth anyone would be interested in, but it's great.

The writing; the production value; the directing; most of the acting are excellent, not to mention the red rock and vast expanses of the New Mexico locations which I am a sucker for. The show premiered in January 2008 and only went to 7 episodes, either planned or because of the writer's strike. Season two start up again July 27th I believe. Check it out. Sunday's at 10pm.

Oh fer--! I finally figured out where I'd seen Brooke Smith before. Duh. Silence of the Lambs. Ok in my defense? I don't watch Grey's Anatomy. I remember seeing her in 6FU & thinking oh good, I'm glad she's still working... & that's about it other than she did a workmanlike job with a pretty low-voltage role.

Oh: and... except my friend says she has The Voice.

I think this theory is crap.

Ringing any bells for anyone?? :D --e

Well, you know I've been obsessed with Brooke Smith ever since this storyline began on Grey's Anatomy, and yes, her voice is so luscious and sexy I can hardly stand it. Along with her enormous and bluer than blue eyes. And I don't even like blondes!

But if you want to see Brooke Smith at her best (meaning, simultaneously abrasive and vulnerable) you MUST rent Season 7: The Contenders. It's a spoof reality show, where all the contestants have to kill each other and the last standing is the winner. Smith plays Dawn Delgado, the reigning champion. She's exquisite.

She was also fantastic last season on Weeds. I rewatched a few weeks ago, and I was reminded of why I watched her episodes and kept hoping she and Mary Louise Parker would make out. She just has amazing chemistry with her female co-stars. Here's hoping the Grey's people don't screw up this storyline.
