In love with a prisoner
|
I've just started watching Weeds & can't make up my mind about it. At all. Except for Mary-Louise Parker, who pretty much rocks every scene she's in. Given, however, that her view of the lesbian sex she did have was: "boring"--which has to rate as one of the most incontestably dismissive and hard-line straight 'responses' I've ever heard--I'm not exactly getting my hopes up. |

No, don't get your hopes up for any actual lesbian action on Weeds. But you will enjoy the friend-chemistry which MLP and BS have in S3, if you watch the show for that long. |

That sounds somewhat promising, I gotta admit... am really envious you got to see The Secrets, given it's just playing at festivals now & I'm not sure if it'll be in more general release, it could be 2009 before it's out on DVD. Argh! |

Cashmere Mafia: first 3 episodes were pretty good with the lesbian storyline. I think the Julia character is totally fantastic (although she isn't the one with the lesbian storyline). I would watch Cashmere Mafia, not the same as The L Word, but it's something. |

Came across this post from last year and just HAD to say something ....
Oooooh yes! Although I was a late bloomer in this one as well. Just like with Bad Girls I didn't discover it until long after it was cancelled. I did see a few original eps here and there but at the time I didn't really understand them fully. (It was somewhere in the middle of the series and I had no reference). And also I thought them, or some of it, pretty harsh. But since then I've been initiated and I think it absolutely brilliant. One of the best shows ever made. It's definitely in my Top 3 of series causing great impact. And then a huge gap of nothingness. And only then comes the list of favorite series I would consider "good", "worthwhile," or nice. It is dark. VERY dark. But where that had seemed somewhat appalling to me at first glance, I actually find it one of its appealing aspects now. The series has so many levels. And also asks for interactive, intelligent viewing. Which I love so much. It did take me several episodes to get that, I admit. Even at second glance. I think Mad Maggot's idea that predominantly young people watched it (which is not true by the way) might come from it's status as action series. Action definitely was a big aspect of it. But only on the surface. At least for me. Underneath, I think, I could best describe it as: A journey of the soul. Most of what was ACTUALLLY happening, happened on a very personal, emotional level, on the inside and between the lines. Nikita also was in sort of a prison. But one that went explicitely farther than that of Larkhall. With demands and repercussions going into extremes. Besides that (but also as part of that) it too had a dominant, tremendously fascinating love story. Which, in ways, (minus the lesbian componant) is somewhat comparable to the one in Bad Girls (i.e. made impossible by it's hopeless environment, but itself being extremely powerfull, beyond boundaries). The cult status of the series was based for the most part on these two aspects and on the many other levels and grey areas that were to be figured out (the makers made sure you never knew exactly what to expect next). Also at the time it seemed to have introduced many new filmic (is that a good english word?) and other elements, that had never been done before on TV. It is in no way comparable to stuff like "24" (the Frank Bauer show) or the later intended-to-be-mainstream-kind-of-LFN clone "Alias" (which was more like a comic magazine compared to it). Unlike in average US action series, good and bad here are not black and white pre-chewed "us/me-against-them" plots. It's way way greyer than that. Like in real life. Only hugely more dramatised. The viewers often also have to look inside themselves to search for what would be "good" in this or that given situation. Statistics show that a very large percentage of the viewers were female (definitely more than half). Most probably because it had such a powerfull female lead, as well as the series' psychological content (the female role also quite new in this way for that time. Peta Wilson took the phenomenon "empowering female heroes on tv" waaaaaaaaaaaaaay beyond the level of Wonder woman, Bionic Woman, Charley's Angles, Xena, Cagney & Lacey and - I dare say - even Scully). On the LFN boards (yepp, still going as well), you still see a dominating presence of women. The series was based on a (then also said-to-be groundbreaking) French Film, with the same title (or sometimes just called "Nikita") by Luc Bresson. But actually this was mostly so only in name. Just the beginning parts of the pilot remind us of it. But even so, with a very important difference of only one aspect. As it is this difference that gives the series it's starting point for its true depth. It makes way for an very archetypal quest of the soul, worthy of, for instance, Persephone, Jonah, and all the other classic go-under-and-live-through-hell-as-to-find-ones-very-truth stories that have been so beautifully etched into our sub-consciousness, by human want for them. Trash the film and watch the series with new eyes and with patience is all I can say. |

These are the shows I watch. All My Children & The Young & The Restless Bad Girls (Of Course) Coronation St. Eastenders I was also watching Emmerdale but they took it off of CBC (sigh). Queer As Folk The L Word I recently got OUT TV and BBC Canada which are great stations. I also watch Till Debt Do Us Part which teaches me alot about money management and whenever I'm having a bad day with my finances, I look at these people and realize just how lucky I really am. |

mafamba, just wanted to say i enjoyed your description of the show. Is it only in French...?? (no subtitles, i take it...?) I really liked the film--it had nothing *but* trashy/comic-book elements--many of these stories do--but if you turn it in another light (as your post did), then as you say, the central story was compelling. Anyway, if the story works, I have no issues with where/how it's set. After all, Buffy works brilliantly as a tv show (the film was shit, & famous for being shit, of course), & really, who cares how silly the premise is? It's some of the best TV ever. The film was a lot of fun technically (the atmosphere, the slow-mo, the blue lighting, the guns, the sound-track... etc!) in a particularly French sort of way. (They do love their version of noir.) Cast was great; dialogue was minimal & grown-up... really I liked it. (PLUS Jeanne Moreau, hmmm?) ...I haven't seen it in ten years easy but I saw it more than once when it came out & am not apologizing for it. Never bothered with the US tv-show, of course. --eps: (I suppose one could/should object to the film's fetishization of violence, but if we started doing that, we'd all watch a whole lot less TV & film, I'm thinkin'...) pps: shows that take women seriously as heroes but still have fun with them are, as you point out, few & far between. (Long Kiss Goodnight would be another example like Femme Nikita, I think--trashier/more American, but still hella fun. The chemistry between Gina Davis & Samuel Jackson is brilliant, they throw lines at each other like they're married & are clearly having a blast.) |

Speaking of Coronation Street, I nearly spat out my tea when I saw Fenner was in it. It comes on before Jeopardy and I usually switch over to that channel while Coronation Street is still on and mute it. I had to turn on the sound and, sure enough, it was Fenner. Not sure what kind of character he is, but he sure looked and sounded the same. |

Hi Ekny, Yepp, I loved Long Kiss Goodnight as well. But I seemed to have caused some confusion? Or was it just the title that did that? The LFN series is in English. US writers. US/Canadian Production. As I recall, in spite of him obviously having sold the rights, Besson was dead against it and has refused watching any of it to today. I never read what he thought of "Point of no Return" though. Which I considered a pretty weak remake.
Yeah, it kind of has that as well. I mean, just YOU try running around inside of a building with your sunglasses on trying to catch the bad guys. ![]() Well, if my LFN avalange got you interested in trying it, there's the bad news that nothing much seems to be available on torrent at the moment. Not in English that is. Nice thread this though. I did pick up some things here and there tipwise. I'll look into some of it. But think I'll be going after The Wire next for starters.. At the moment I'm also watching: - Spooks - Six Feet Under (last season. Yeah I know. Dutch tv is a bit slow showing it. I had it stored here for ages but I promised a friend - who's nothing without subtitles - to watch it together with her). - Bad Girls (again) - House - Law & Order SVU - CSI (the Vegas one only) Oh yeah, and usually I'm having my dinner with: - the so maniest rerun of Gilmore Girls (Lauren Graham seems to be good for my appetite )Tried Weeds. Came off it. Also came off: - ER (ever since Abbey got back on the wagon again. Due to the writer's strike at the time I s'pose) - The L Word (really. The writing and continuity in THAT often. **sigh) I looooooove Voyager (one of my top 3). Could give another in depth avalange on that too if neccessary. No sweat. Back in the days I was into Carnivale. Another darky. Love Prime Suspect. |

PS: Mafamba, thank you for pointing out that Nikita series. I had also thought the main target were the teenagers and therefore ignored it. Lol, I hardly ever watch TV anymore nowadays and with all that advertisement squeezed inbetween, it is no fun anyway unless they are aired on channels you pay the fee for. I love crime series. Below the series that I remember at the very moment – ‘present and very past’ in no particular order. The Avengers Cracker Bad Girls (but only 1 to 3, I confess herewith. I still cannot bring myself to go beyond.) Prime Suspect Silent Witness The Sculptress, the Ice House (mini series – TV adaptions of Minette Walters crime novels) Some other mini series such as Portrait of a Marriage, Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith Martin Beck (Swedish crime series) Sherlock Holmes French & Saunders (as well as their mini series ‘Let them eat cake’ which is hilarious) Mistresses Judge John Deed Xena Julie Lescaut (French crime series) Belphégor (French crime series) Maigret (with Rupert Davies) Mistresses Wire in the Blood (the books are much better in my opinion though) Profiler Six Feet Under Gimme, gimme, gimme Dame Edna Spitting Image Anna Lee Inspector Lynley Mysteries Crime Traveller Devices and Desires The Gentle Touch Juliet Bravo Documentaries by David Attenborough Murder in Suburbia Hex Robbie Coltraine’s B-Roads Time Tunnel Mr Ed Profiler Seventy Seven Sunset Strip Maxwell Smart I dream of Jeannie The Saint Hawaii Five 0 Mannix Absolutely Fabulous The Big Valley Bonanza Cagney & Lacey Charlie’s Angels Colombo Dallas Dynasty Flipper The Flintstones Full House Kojak Kung-Fu Tammy Bewitched The Streets of San Francisco Used to watch some of the C.S.I’s ER Cold Case Charmed The L-Word (stopped after series 3, because I found it sort of too flashy and it started to bore me) |
