E, did you mention Friday Night Lights on this thread? I just started watching it today--through the lovely Netflix-Tivo partnership, I can add it to my Netflix Queue and then immediately watch it on my tv with my Tivo!!--and I'm finding it incredibly involving. I always say I don't like shows which are about men, but the truth is, what I don't like is shows which aren't about our inner emotional lives. FNL is about men/boys, yes, but it's about their emotions: fears, loves, etc etc. It's like, only through sports can men really feel all the things that women can feel in normal life. Anyway, I'm only five episodes in, but the fact that I was interested enough to watch five episodes in one day already tells you this show is better than just about anything else on tv right now. Even the shows I like (Pushing Daisies, Ugly Betty) I can't watch more than maybe two episodes in a day. I'd say Brothers & Sisters is the only other show I find this engaging right now. Of course, because I like the show, it's surely going to be canceled, but at least there will have been three seasons of it, which is more than some other shows I've liked have gotten. |

Hey there, yep, I rhapsodized (in a low-key way [I hope...]) here & in another thread too I'm afraid, but it was all in a good cause. I just thought... if I'm this resistant to watching a show with these themes, I'm prolly not the only one. Am just delighted you got around to it & are enjoying it so much! S1 is wonderful. Yeah, there's a lot of boy-stuff, but it's not only boyz: there *is* actually some good & substantial girl-stuff. It just creeps up on you. Keep an eye on Tyra (as if that's real stressful): she's an interesting character. All of it's straight of course but--oh who cares. The acting is terrific. The set dressing is like another character it's so brilliant. It's a real pleasure to watch. Thanks for the update, so glad you have all the rest of S1 to look forward to! Lucky thing. ![]() oh, ps: TWoP's episode reviews for S1 are excellent, but I'd strongly recommend not reading them until you're ahead of the game as they do contain some spoilers. Sometimes TWoP's stuff is... meh, why am I bothering, but the woman who did most of the full-length write-ups for this show clearly adored it, & was witty & on-target most of the time, they're a fun read in their own right. |

I also watched Friday Night Lights and I think the show is fantastic!! So much action takes place in such a small town. I also love watching One Tree Hill. That Dan Scott is such a SOB, but he justifies everything that he does. He's the ultimate "Stage Father". I also started watching Eastenders on Showcase & BBC Canada, but we're two years behind. I'm at the storyline where Ben finally confesses to what he did to Freddie and he manages to get away with it since his father doesn't admit it. If you ask me, he's encouraging "Bad Behavior". If that were me, I'd go to the Police, and make sure that Ben was put in Juvie for awhile. I know little kids like Ben, always whine, always complain, and always get their way. Peggy on the other hand is a Bad Grandmother. She's too nice to her boys and allows them to get away with too much. I don't know if she owns the Flat upstairs but if it were my Flat, I'd tell them to get the F@ck out, and take care of those kids themselves. I'm too old to be a "Substitute Mum" for anyone. Also, another thing she does is compares Ben to Courtney, which is something that any Adult should "never" do. It breeds anger, resentment, contempt, and jealousy and God knows what's going to happen to those kids later on. |

Is anyone else watching The United States of Tara? I've seen the first two episodes and it looks promising. I've been a fan of Toni Collette since Muriel's Wedding and also have a soft spot for John Corbett. |

Spooks S8, FNL S4 So, I just finished S8 of Spooks. It was as good as S7 (ie a return to the strengths of the show when it wasn't wallowing in Adam's Mire), perhaps better. Ended as usual with one of their patented will-we-kill-off-another-major-character cliffhangers. In this case--if they do, I think the show's over. Either way, actually, I can't see it continuing for more than 1-2 seasons at the most, which pains me but does seem to be a healthy run for any show, these days. They did bring back Ruth... but I have to believe it's for reasons yet to be revealed: Nicola Walker was woefully underused this season. On the other hand, Hermione Norris as Ros Myers is the bomb, & consistently gets off some of the season's best lines (and deliveries). But the best of all are given to Harry, whose acidic commentary on politics, governments, and in this case, late-capitalism itself extend well beyond the show's ostensible boundaries: Ros: Did you see that American financier on Newsnight? said Britain wasn't worth investing in any longer. Harry: I pay no attention to the witterings of the rentier class, Ros. (I suppose it's just me but--I had to hit pause I was laughing so hard.) Also watched the first half of S4 of Friday Night Lights, which was... terrific. It was (forgive me): awesome, even. I was afraid it'd go downhill, lose direction, etc. Better than ever. Watching a maturing Tim Riggins is like a religious experience. You can hardly believe your eyes, but it's entirely credible. Connie Britton as Tami is still--and I say this with greatest reverence--MILF-nonpareil. PLUS they brought on several players from The Wire, which is almost too much of a good thing. I had to stop watching bec the only torrents out there suck in the extreme, but I just found out the show... erm, hadn't even aired yet. So I guess better versions will appear if I can only abide in patience. It's all very biblic, y'see. I have no idea what could possibly be worth bothering with after these shows end. Though the producer of The Wire is doing a show set in post-Katrina New Orleans, which I would, in fact, pay money to watch. No idea when it'll air--next year, I'm guessing. |

Well, to pick up from where I left off: Treme put me to sleep. Bummer. But... Southland is the shit. Best cop show I've seen in a long long time. I thought it'd all been done, but somehow, sneakily, this show is making it fresh & interesting. Last night's episode (S3, ep4) for those of you following along, was Emmy-worthy material, just... perfectly balanced. Southland is an ensemble show--if you haven't seen it, you *must* start at the beginning. ...Damn that was some impressive tv. That is all. |

ekny, I noticed you asked about Skins (UK version) way back when the first series started, but have you watched any of it? I didn't watch Skins Generation 2 (Series 3 and 4) when it was broadcast originally, but I succumbed recently (despite being much older than the show's presumed target audience) after reading numerous Heather Hogan pieces about it at After Ellen. To say Heather waxes poetic about Naomi and Emily is an understatement, but having seen "Naomily" myself now, I can see why. And the actresses who play Naomi and Emily -- Lily Loveless and Kat Prescott -- are AMAZING. |

Ooch, good question... I'm really ambivalent about Skins UK, mainly negative I'm afraid. On the plus-side, the Emily/what'shername storyline was pretty solid through S3, it's a coming-out story, it has a clear direction. After they get together and without being too spoilery, there's nowhere to go but a break-up, and the reasons for it, although credible within the story, are disheartening & ultimately... well, *not* so credible. That is: the reasons are consistent for the characters, but they got stuck in a crap plotline that bogged down the whole season. S4's Drama starts off on a down-note, & never really gets its sh*t together. And neither do Emily & what'shername. (The actor playing Emily is kinda cute in an odd way, she grew on me very quickly at any rate--and what a great voice! She rocked the role & I've no doubt we'll see more of her in other shows. I'd have to disagree about the actor playing her gf--she did nothing for me. Her range felt very limited, to me. Although if she'd had a thing with Effy... I could see that. Then I would've given her another chance. :D) I had no problems with Emily sleeping with JJ, a bit to my own surprise, I'd read about that beforehand & expected to find it irritating: again, within the intersecting trajectories of the various storylines, it read very clearly as a sort of desperation-move, and it is in fact something many teenagers do, even if they do identify as lesbian or gay. And in this show, teens make bad choices all the time, & sleep with people they shouldn't; that's in part what the show is about, and, again... what happens with a lot of teenagers in RL. Further, Emily makes entirely clear it's a pity-f*ck, and a one-time-only one at that. Her reasons for doing so felt believable within the setting. More interesting was the way the show handled the non-shagging resolution of Naomi's--ah!, that was her name, I remember now--deal with Cook. I understand why some lesbians object to the sleeping-with-boys s/l politically, obviously. I'm just tired of the whingeing. Let the people making the show tell the story, and see if you believe it, first. But overall, the plotting in S4 was a mess, and I barely could sit through many of the episodes. There were a few standouts--the cinematography & storytelling in the episode abt Cook & his father were excellent, I thought, enough so that the episode had the feel of a short film--that's a director I'd keep an eye on--and similarly, there were some very good young actors to watch out for, but they were wasted on OTT plot devices & unbelievably hokey gimmicks: since *when* is Effy manic-depressive? Totally out of the blue. That actor is also very promising, but the writers just did no one any favors this season. And the ending, the Freddy episode? Man, please. It was bad enough I assume the show won't be renewed. Which is a shame, as it was a nice platform for new talent. |

Hi, ekny -- Series 5 of Skins UK -- with a whole new cast (Generation 3) premiered last Thursday night. I've seen mixed reviews, but I rather liked it. Re Gen 2, I agree completely that Series 3 was MUCH better than Series 4, and that the writing was all over the place in the latter, and don't EVEN get me started about Effy and Freddie. And yes, the writers messed up Naomi and Emily pretty badly in Series 4, and the five minutes in the series finale wasn't adequate compensation for that, but for me the Nikki-Helen happy ending wasn't entirely sufficient compensation for what the S3 writers did to them (particularly Helen), either. On the whole I still thought Skins S4 was worth watching, and had some high points. I agree with you about Kat Prescott being very cute and having a terrific voice, and yes, she rocked the role. Re Lily Loveless, her voice isn't sexy like Kat's, but I thought she did some terrific acting, especially in 306 and 402. And on the few occasions that I didn't find Lily convincing, those were the times when, IMO, she was fighting an uphill battle against crummy writing. Obviously, though, YMMV. "Naomily" isn't finished, by the way -- there is a Skins UK feature film on its way, and both characters/actresses will be in it. I don't know when it will be finished/released, but the guy who co-wrote 306 is writing it, so hopes are high that it won't be "bollocky wankshite," as Emily's little brother would say. :-) Oh, and Kaya Scodelario, who plays Effy? She's in the Skins film, too, but she's also going to be playing Catherine Earnshaw in Wuthering Heights. How perfect is that? LateToTheParty P.S. Of course there's now a Skins US, too, with a lesbian character front and center, but perhaps that's a topic for a different post! |

Oh, this is very nice news. I'm happy to hear that. Will this be a new "Masterpiece Theater" production? I was very impressed with her. (Also very much liked the lesbian couple and the actresses and interesting about the film version.) And, Effy/Freddy...both anglo italians, for someone to snap them up for a production of R&J would be a no-brainer. |

Heya, great post! I agreed with your take on Skins to the letter--and this made me laugh out loud:
Seriously.
Agreed here, too, and think that's very fair: it was not the most enviable of roles.
I haven't followed all the hubbub about the US version (don't care: given the restrictions, it'd already have to suck before it ever hit production), but am not surprised; UK tv is always more forward about representations of sex, partial nudity, etc. And of course their age of consent is lower, as well.
Heh & amen to that!
Really. *Really.* Wow. Very, I'd have to say. Didn't know, thx for the heads-up! |

Jeanna you clever thing you! How'd you get ahold of Skins, I didn't know you were watching that! Is the board weird lately or is it my IP? Our posts went up at the same minute, yesterday, but I didn't see yours til today, when I got an email update. Wtf, you know? Anyways: agree about Wuther, but if I have to watch one more minute of Effy/Freddie staring soulfully into each other's doomed eyeballs I will run from my house screaming into the streets. (Is she Italian? for some reason I thought one of her parents--mother?--was Brazilian. Huh.) eta: it is very weird to be evaluating what are practically child-actors in this way, it makes me feel totally aged. Girl's face isn't even done forming into its adult lines: it's like SMG in the first season of Buffy. |
