Hon, I know we've both been a bit...frazzled, shall we say? lately, but...we have discussed it before. <G>

I've downloaded Skins from Sounder. And it's been posted to You Tube like everything else. Now I notice it's available on Netflix through season 4.

Was not happy with the ending of season 4 with emphasis-on-psychotherapist's 'dealing' with Freddie. Suddenly I'm watching a brit murder mystery instead of a coming-of-age serial.

Anyway...I was totally amazed that we both posted at exactly the same time! What are we? twins?! <G> And I did see it yesterday as soon as I posted...and I was like WTF?! lol

Oh, maybe the actress' last name is Portugeuse? and I mistook it for italian. Anyway, sounded italian to me the italian, but I could be quite wrong. Still, I mean, c'mon, they were basically auditioning for R&J as it was, and the fact that they both look ethnically correct as well would be a broody romantic treat...for some of us anyway. <G>

But I can really see her as Cathy...tho I've never really seen an adequate adaptation of Wuthering.

she [Lily Loveless] did nothing for me. Her range felt very limited, to me. Although if she'd had a thing with Effy... I could see that. Then I would've given her another chance. :D)

Ekny, if Naomi/Effy is your fantasy pairing, you might like these:

Ew. <wince> They're too young to pull that stuff off for the cameras. Sorry, my bad! <shields eyes & turns away, chock full o discomfort.>

Inexcusable. It was bad enough that he was clearly fucking over Effy for absolutely no reason--well, wait, let me back up: manic-depressive? Really. And we saw indications of this--where? Oh, the drug-addled montage at the beginning of that episode was supposed to convince us--in a show where teenagers regularly do extraordinary amounts of drugs & booze & never suffer a single ill effect (Cook)... except for the odd plot-motivated Art-Linkletter's-daughter-style suicide?--that suddenly she'd had one tab too much? Please.

Argh. I got started. See? Don't get me started. I don't care. New mantra. Don't. See me? not-caring, la, lala. //rant

<inhales, steeply>

Yes, she added more calmly: the plot veered off course with episode 1, scene 1 of Series 4--and with a few exceptions, never got back on track. Effy's s/l tanked, & took the (dreadfully boring) Freddie along with it. Which? Not such a tragedy, except that no part of it was believable. The melodrama was one thing; camp is another. Why can't the Brits make this distinction??

Actually I don't think they were pulling stuff for cameras, ekny -- those were just run of the mill "night out drinking with friends" photos that Kaya apparently shared via twitter before they made their way to other web sites. Also, they're not pulling anything in the photo where they're both facing the camera -- it's just a pretty picture, not "pervy" in any way.

As to age, KS will be 19 in March and LL will be 21 in April so, yeah, they're still too young for some of us here, but at least they're not jail-bait anymore, if that makes you feel any less discomfort!

ekny and Jeanna, I agree with everything you wrote about Freddie and the shrink, etc. Really, really bad writing that.

Jeanna, Kaya Scodelario has a Brazilian mother and an English father (she uses her mother's surname professionally).

Re the Wuthering Heights film, getting the thing made seems to be taking forever. Per IMDB:

Natalie Portman was originally cast as Catherine Earnshaw. After her departure from the film, Lindsay Lohan campaigned for the role but Abbie Cornish was eventually cast. As filming neared, Cornish was then replaced by Gemma Arterton. When Andrea Arnold was hired to direct, she replaced Gemma Arterton with Kaya Scodelario.

See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1181614/trivia

Lots of directors seem to have come and gone as well. The film status is listed as "post-production," though, so I assume that means they eventually got around to, you know, shooting the film!

That's good news, looking forward to it! I was ambivalent about the last scene of S2 (I'm sure you know what I'm referring to), because a) dumb idea and b ) it doesn't suggest anything promising for future plotlines, but then... this show's plots aren't really the point, least not for me. (Although they do have some strikingly original ideas in them, to give fair credit; it's just the overall arc I'm not convinced by.) But so as long as they're consistent with the characters, and as long as LC is in it... I'm content! :)

I know what you mean about the ending of S2 - but S3 is worth the watch, definitely.
And LC is still in it :)

And is the american version on "SyFy" just as bad by comparison as I expect it to be?

Haven't seen anything of the American version Jeanna - would be interesting to know how it is similar, and different. Also to see whether it has been given positive or negative reviews.

Series 5 of Skins UK -- with a whole new cast (Generation 3) premiered last Thursday night.  I've seen mixed reviews, but I rather liked it.

Are you still watching? I've checked out the first two eps of S5 and found them, if I can describe them as such, more "real" than all of S3/4. Perhaps because status and bullying seem more universal to the adolescent experience than what ever was going on in the surreal Second Gen.

(and having watched S3/4, I completely agree with you, ekny and jeanna about all of that.)

I was wondering: how Politically Correct do these shows come across in the UK? I wouldn't want to say tokenized, but it does seem that there is a Necessary Gay in each generation of the show. This round being Frankie's Dads.

And on a completely off the wall note: is the name Frankie the new Nikki? Are there that many Francescas out there and are they all Frankies? It is like a lesbian meme - although I recognize while this Frankie probably isn't playing on our team she sure wears the uniform well. :innocent

I started a whole new thread about DA, namely the fact that the only gay characters were also two of the more odious characters. Got my wrists smacked. But. Just sayin'. Still liked the show. And Maggie Smith. Well, yes.

And to be completely Yank, I also watch Castle and The Mentalist, and am peeved that they have cancelled Medium.

If you're looking for a cop/detective-type show with brains, you should try Scott & Bailey. This show has very quietly been rewriting the book in a number of areas: two female leads with a female boss; and everyone is (mainly) business-like--which is very, very refreshing. The details of the police-work feel unusually well-researched and realistic. There's the normal filling in of backstories with various romances, family matters and so on, but mainly the show gets with the central storylines each season and stays focused. S&B started off strong and just gets better each series.

Which brings me to Nicola Walker, who deserves an entire thread dedicated to her extreme awesomeness. This is an astonishingly versatile actor I've been keeping track of for years--have watched whole shows just because she's on them, in fact--but her performance in episode 3.01 of S&B is literally breathtaking. Incredible stuff. I'm still gobsmacked 24 hours later, still thinking about it.

Which in turn brings us back to the other novelty about this show's approach to crime--possibly for reasons of budget but more likely just because less is more: although the show deals with some fairly grizzly crimes, there's almost nothing of the CSI fetish-level detailing of crime-scenes here. Episode 3.01 is particularly striking that way: very grim stuff... but with no visuals at all. Zero. Not "tell don't show", but rather showing us through their effects on the victims.

Impressive tv all round.
