Here in Britain the weather is perking up at 50 degrees and quite mild weather, temporarily. Probably it will switchback its way through rain and wind and then mild again. The snow you guys are getting is something else. It was quite a few years back when a quite narrow road ,that climbs and bends at the same time for a short stretch, was solid with snow and a number of us decided rather than sit in the car and pray, got out of our cars and pushed each car up one after another.

Here I was all smug, laughing with (or at) CBG and her tale of walking to and from work, since I live in the 'burbs and drive everywhere. Just have to survive the walk from the door to the car (and even at that I have terribly chapped lips). I was even going to offer to lend her the price of the TTC fare.

I've had my comeuppance tonight though. White knuckle drive home, and on a Friday of all nights!!

ekny - I thought we had a deal. You were going to take all of our snow. Well, if we have to have it here, let's hope you get a reprieve.

Sorry, aj57, dropped the ball here... we did get more snow today, but I'd suggest our temp of -11ºF last night means we're still taking the brunt of the cold. So... points for that, eh?! :) --e

(ps: And I *walk* to work!) :eek

Max speed of 35 mph on my Friday night ride home from work! And, canceled plans with all my boyfriends, as we got about 3 inches of snow in an hour. This is winter! :cry2

Just some sympathy for those of you freezing your arses off. Houston, Texas has still had no winter and I used my air conditioner again last night.

All of you popsicles out there just try and remember that this too shall pass.

I don't blame you, having seen first-hand what snow does to roads and sidewalks/pavements in the UK. It's downright perilous.

I was always scratching my head at the concept of "grit" which didn't seem to contain enough salt to melt the snow/ice and didn't provide enough traction to be useful. But since I lived far enough south that a few cm a year was all that would fall, it didn't drive me as mad as it might have...

aj57 sorry to hear your drive was nerve-wracking and glad you made it in one liece. The TTC takes longer than walking (they're replacing the streetcar tracks in my neighborhood, so we have to wait for shuttle bus service and make a connection) and walking is better for my health. I do take the bus/streetcar if it's really slippery outside but standing outdoors waiting for two different TTC vehicles is no picnic. Oh yeah, and I made a promise to myself that in air temperatures under -12, I'll take a taxi...

The up-side of this freakish amount of snow is that Toronto seems to be getting much more efficient at snow-removal. I had to drive out to Brampton today for a funeral and all the main streets downtown seem to be clear. The Lakeshore and Gardiner were also plain sailing.

e, you're allowed one mistake, but I'll expect you to come through on snow diversion duty at least until the end of March.

Yes'm! <bob> It won't happen again! (Littrally: I checked the forecast & snow of some time is predicted every day for the next week. Starting... tonight. Just did my first shovel of the evening.)

As I look out me window, it's nice and sunny and I've been hearing birds chirping outside. Current temp -1C

e - I converted (using google) -11F to C. Umm, that's damn cold.

Looks like we'll have temps above 0C tomorrow with rain, so some of that snow that just wouldn't disappear might just start do so.

Shovelling? Since mid February I have refused on principle to do any more driveway shovelling. If I can bulldoze my way out of my driveway, I'm prepared to do just that. *though we do have sidewalk on our side of the street, so no choice but to do those*

Hold it, they just advised of a winter storm watch on the tv - freezing rain!!!

See, you can never get too cocky at this time of year.

Yesterday in Western PA was gorgeous! It was above 60 degrees, whispy clouds lined the blue sky, and there was a gentle breeze. Why does mother nature tease us so? 40 with freezing rain today, but it gives you a taste of what is to come...

Yep, we got that too. Difference is, it went right back down to freezing last night & never got up again. Currently it's 30 & doing that--thing.

I am familiar with that thing! High of 33 today, with the dirty misty snow/ rain. In like a lion, right?

Color me... not overly-optimistic. It's just we've had plenty of snow in April, in years past. I'll consider it spring in May, unfortunately... not before. (Ymmv--and hopefully, will!) :)

As an aside, I'm glad that you guys your side of the pond stick to Fahrenheit on temperature readings which is something I can relate to. Over 70 degrees- hot to bloody hot. 50 - 70 mildish give or take a bit. Under that starts to get cold to bloody cold, Brit weather forcasters talk in terms of what I was brought up to think of as centigrade only they call it celsius. The numbering scheme means sod all to me. Is this some device to gloss over the phenomena of global warming. As someone who works for the government in a fairly lowly occupation, I am more, not less, willing to believe in government massaging of the figures, not to say the 'target culture' which only encourages those to fiddle their way round the system (As in bodybag's 'random drug testing' in series 1)

Oh yes, back on target, the weather is sunny for today at 50 though set to become rainier over the weekend. I'm driving home in the light. I'm sorry for you guys afflicted by bad weather still.

Well, that's the end of the latest snow storm... I'm sure we managed to get the predicted 30 cm but I refuse to depress myself by watching the local news to confirm. Enough already! The clocks have changed, it's time for spring!!!! I remember wearing t-shirts on the day we "spring forward" instead I'm looking out at a "winter wonderland" (which might have been wondrous the first six times it happened this year, but it is definitely losing its charm). You know, I don't remember getting this tired of beach scenes when I lived in the tropics...

So aj57, how did you guys fare in the suburbs?

ekny, I hope you also got snow and what we got was just the leftover stuff, otherwise you've got some 'splainin' to do...

Richard, only the Americans are still using Fahrenheit - we're 100% metric in Canada and the fuel efficiency numbers on cars mean nothing to me. I still think in miles per gallon. Other than that, I'm ok, since every calculation I ever did in school was metric anyway. It's only alarming when I realize that I'm starting to think of days with a high temperature of zero as "mild"....

To all of you in the southern hemisphere, do you have a sofa I can crash on? I'm getting itchy feet. (Or maybe that's just frostbite!)
