we had a nice day just outside toronto, ca. the sun shone and the snow is really melting now. went for a walk for the first time in ages. i wonder if there is ever a time of year when the temps here are similar to the temps in oz. i guess our spring/your fall; our fall/your spring are the most likely times. |

yeah i'd say so. how weird is that?! i can't even fathom cold like you get, i couldn't cope. if you were to be here in the middle of our winter, you would be in a t-shirt while i'd be in a jumper (sweater). lol. & the only time i wouldn't go outside for a walk is when it's too hot  |

a couple of nice days. it got up to a balmy 15C on Tuesday. The sun was actually shining when I drove home from work with the car windown open!! it's nice that we get the extra hour of daylight at night, since we moved the clocks forward an hour this past weekend. unfortunately, warm weather not to last. |

I had to revive this thread for people living in the eastern half of North America. I mean, WTF? 5 inches of rain in Central Park in 1 day?! I'm in Montreal and the winds are gusting at 50mph and it's sleeting! That's right, sideways frozen precipitation in the third week in April. Hope all y'all affected by this nor' easter are staying warm and dry. A. |

I'm off work today, thank goodness: it's been nasty out all weekend, & has now switched from rain to snow. I heard the salt trucks come out while I was sleeping last night and just thought... no way. Way. |

Hey, at least you have salt trucks. The city of Montreal, despite its reputation for efficiency in snow removal, has decided to ignore the precipitation because a warm front is in the forecast. Apparently, their snow removal contract for the season ended 9 days ago and they have to pay $11 million per request in the off-season, so they've decided to do nothing. The slush is 6 inches deep at intersections and roads are icy in places (sidewalks are ridiculous). My socks are wet and I still have two more client meetings today. Pissed off? Me? Enjoy your day off. You picked an excellent one for it. Especially if you have a fireplace... A. |

A fireplace! Oh man, we are *amused*! I wish. I have a cat, however, who at the moment is expressing serious irritation (something cats do well anyway) as to why I'm sitting up at my computer when we could be napping & she could be keeping at least 1 square foot of me warmer. Which, come to think of it... is not such a bad idea. ![]() Yeah, am familiar w/cities & their snow-removal contracts, my sympathies, that sucks. Ours overextended themselves several years ago & it was a total nightmare since they did that in *February*. In fact when I heard the trucks in my sleep, that was the first thought I had: must have extra money in the budget this year. And the next, ironically, was in keeping with the city of Montreal: no sodding WAY am I shoveling any more this year, it can just melt when it's good and ready. Hope your toes survive, wet socks are a misery! --e ETA: ps--one of the reasons we have so much salt is there's a salt mine, Cargill, not quite tapped out, about 20 miles up the lake. It supplies salt for the entire tri-state area. It's got about 15 years left, is my understanding. I wish I could tour it, the photos I've seen are incredibly cool, but that's totally off-limits to anyone who doesn't work there for safety reasons. |

Can I just rant a little bit here? So, NYC, no snow, but pouring rain all day yesterday. Like, for 16-18 hours. That's fine, because my girlfriend and I were just holing up at home, watching tv and gloating about how glad we were it was Sunday and we didn't need to leave the apartment. And about midway through the afternoon, my girlfriend looks up above our brand-new, flat screen LCD television set (easily the nicest most expensive item in our apartment), and notices water, pouring down from the place where the wall meets the ceiling. It has already soaked (ie destroyed) one of the pieces of art we had on the wall, but luckily not yet the other (more sentimental) one. The paint on the wall is staining in places, and bubbling in others, from the water. So, we call the super, because, of course, rain should be staying OUTSIDE the building. It took two phone calls and about four hours before they even sent someone over. The two guys come into our apartment and say the following: 1) There's nothing they can do about it until the rain stops* 2) To fix it for real will require fixing the roof *According to the weather forecast, that's going to be on THURSDAY! So, basically, the super sent two guys over to say, in essence, "You're going to have water dripping into your apartment for the next four days. Have a lovely evening." The worst bit is, we know KNOW the landlord is not going to fix the roof. We know this because for the last two years there has been water dripping, and paint and plaster falling, in the hallway right outside our apartment. And each time they re-plaster, and re-paint, and never actually fix the leak on the roof. Not only that, but our next door neighbors have had water leaks in their apartment during every major rainstorm the last few years. And yet still, the landlord does not fix the roof. My girlfriend and I, being the narcicistic types that we are, basically ignored the problem, figuring this horror could never possibly occur within our brand-new, renovated apartment for which we are paying market rent (unlike our neighbors who are rent-stabilized and therefore have incredibly ridiculously cheap rents). Hah! Now we've got a totally fucked up, water-stained wall right in the middle of our livingroom, a television set unplugged and pushed to the middle of the room, and towels and pans lined up in about three different places in the apartment. And the feeling of impending doom, knowing every time it rains from now until we move, we're probably going to have water leaking into our apartment. Lovely! |

Out of Dorm

Well, apparently, no good weather in the world today. abzug, I truly feel for you and your girlfriend. I've had the same problem for years and it's only half-fixed, if I may say so. We've had roof leakage in the master bedroom and bathroom and a year passed until they finally fixed the roof above them. Our balcony, however, has a slanting roof and the guys that show up (the roof fixing crew?) say they have no access to it. Ever. Our satellite antenna was somehow put there, but yet they can't go there... It gets bad in the winter when it snows, then it gets warmer, the snow melts, the level of water on the balcony is ankle-high and then it's freezing cold again. Which means we have a skating rink there. We can host Ice Skating World Championships, I swear. So anyway, I hope those people will be able to fix your roof after the rain stops. Maybe it'll stop before Thursday? ![]() Oh yeah, and it's been raining on and off all day here, too. Which only meant I stayed in and re-watched a certain TV show. |

abzug you have my sympathy. leaks are a pain in the ass. hopefully you have another tv elsewhere in the apt. i can just imagine what rent you must be paying in nyc to have the privilege of being rained on. t.o. hasn't been hit as badly as montreal. just some rain. |

abzug, my heart goes out to you. The first house we bought in the US, started leaking about a month after closing. I'm not sure which is worse: waiting for a cheap-ass, lazy landlord to fix it, or knowing that there's no landlord, so you've got a bill for a few grand in your immediate future. ekny, you're making me miss my ancient kitty, who is giving someone else cuddles, even as we speak. My hotel room is decent - as hotel rooms go - but it ain't home. aj57 when I left Toronto yesterday it was just setting up to rain, so I'm glad to hear it never got too bad. My flight was delayed - no, not because of the weather; Air Canada doesn't need an excuse- and then so bumpy that they couldn't serve drinks. (Is it wrong for me to be happy that the turbulence freaked out the chatty kid in the row in front of me so she shut up and I slept for 45 minutes?) Montreal, on the other hand, was having a monsoon when we landed that turned into snow overnight and sleet this morning. I'm expecting more of the same tomorrow, but I've discovered this lovely labrynth of store-line corridoors and interconnected malls under the streets of Montreal that I never knew existed, so some good has come of the extreme "spring" weather. A. |

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. And Mad Maggot, I'm so sorry for your balcony skating rink! The landlord claims they are going to fix everything, but I'll believe it when I see it.
Yes, isn't Montreal miraculous? My best friend lives there, and her only complaint about this whole underground complex is that it gets really uncomfortable to shed your winter layers when you're down there, and then lug them around, only to have to put them all back on when (inevitably) you must brave the great outdoors once again. |

June is it?). i actually smelled spring in the air yesterday (and i don't mean the fragrance of the dog pooh melting in the parks) i actually smelled grass! hope the weather has improved in nyc and in montreal if you're still there. |
