Down the Block

Do any of our UK friends have an allotment? How big is your plot?
Any pics? What did you grow?

looks like fun, wish I could send it some pics. can't because my scanner is broke. I live in Roland Arkansas, right across from my front yard is Pinnacle Mountain. my back yard has a tree line that opens up to the forest. the trees are pine, oak and hickory nut. during the Spring and Summer, I walk back to Lake Maumelle, which is found about 3/4 of a mile behind my home. I love it here because I also pick huckle berries, elder berries and dew berries! :clap , yeah for me, that means I have some yummy jelly to chow down on.

Out of Dorm
I just spent the past few months living rough in the Boreal forest of Northern Canada. Between all of the dirt, insects, and wacky weather I managed to grab a few snapshots that I have been encouraged to share.

My first night in camp I was treated to this lovely spectacle. It was one of the few nights that I was actually up late enough to see a night sky. It's not dark for very long in the north.

I did see plenty of sunsets...

...and sunrises, though.

I was actually up there to help with a study of American Kestrels, but I think I captured more images of other things.

Like flowers:

A Saw-whet owl, they really like it when you scratch them between the eyes.

Some Boreal Owl chicks. It's very rare to see one in the wild. I would like to note though, that these little fellows excrete some of the vilest, most odiferous poo imaginable. I should know as I had the pleasure of having one of them defecate on me.

Great bird pics Loon. Owls are my favourites. Kestrels are beautiful too.

Did you have to do any banding?

It's good to be back, even if I am having difficulty re-adjusting to the concept of indoor plumbing.

Bring it on! I fancy myself an expert at the game of whack-a-mosquito.

Kestrels are quite beautiful, of course they are also quite loud and very adept at inflicting pain on medlesome field assistants.

I banded many kestrel chicks, as well as a couple of boreal owls chicks. Horribly cute, the lot of them.
