I love this thread... Never heard of kumara, but turns out it was introduced from Americas sweet potatoe. It has the same scientific name Ipomoea batatas. And of course, the american sweet potatoe was introduced from Africa. The American yam is a type of sweet potatoe. I can never remember the difference. I just always buy the one that looks the orangish on the inside. I just simply bake them until oozingly soft, sweet as can be. Sometimes I will bake them cut open with just a touch of butter and brown sugar..yumm. |

Just back from our local Scots baker/butcher. It's a 10 minute walk from the office; called The But 'n Ben. Anyway, just bought two dozen potato scones - not all for me, of course. They're very popular around the office too. I also bought a Scots meat pie that I'm heating one up with beans for lunch. cassandra
Don't mention it. OK, I have to ask, what do you normally eat for breakfast? cbg is known for missing messages, so I'm going to try to get her attention here: CANADA BAD GIRL, THEY DO SELL MINSTRELS HERE! I found them at the very same Scots baker. Though, they're $1.25 for a tiny, wee packet. Still keeping an eye out for Cheezies and Twiglets. I even asked my boss about them, since he has an English background. Never heard of them. |

We normally make our "plain" sweet potatoe... (with red/pink skin) more or les the same as the pumpkin... Yeah I know we "afrikaners" like to make things sweet!! |

I know of a sweet potato recipe with a twist. It's one of my sister-in-law's secret recipes, but it involves sweet potatoes that you roast together with red beans, peppers, chillies and jalapenos. She serves it with sour cream and it is most delicious.
Yeah, sounds like a good idea! Seeing as it would appear that the "old ladies" aren't going to stop exchanging recipes soon... |

Oh ... occasionally ice-cream .... occasionally other soft drinks (can't remember what though) ......occasionally alcohol .... most of the time - cream soda & orange juice with strawberries blended together (sort of like a smoothie). Mmmm .... haven't had one for years so can't quite remember the recipe. Also had sugar and maybe(?) lemon juice added as well. Was a bit fiddly sometimes getting the taste just right!! Great on a hot summer's day! Hmmm ... would make an interesting (but disgusting) punch though I suspect you cheated and had them separately!

Sounds like a good night then, Lisa! Love your new av (it is new, isn't it?) Trust me aj, what I have for breakfast is not at all interesting. As usual I can sense that you are practically bursting with curiosity so I'll put you out of your misery for once - cereal & either fruit or yoghurt. Told ya! Not remotely interesting. Satisfied now? Em ... whats L&P?

It's a softdrink, that is "world famous in NZ".. yes that is a qoute from the packaging..I'm not lying.. Go check this out Wikipedia -L&P To explain how it tastes....mmnn It's like Sprite (lemonade)... (hopefully everybody knows sprite)but with a hint of lemon in it... Really nice!! It's like Coke light with lemon in it.. Hope that makes sense When I was in NZ we actually went through the town on our way to Hobbiton!!... By accident... I have a photo of that big bottle in town..hie hie Yeah I did the tourist thing |

Cassandra - no complexes, I like rolled rs & I don't think I'm alone, 'sides, Scots aren't the only ones that roll their Rs. CBG, no clue what brand they are, but your "Cheesies", sound a lot like the various generic cheese puffs floating around the states and yes they look like wotsits. Irn Bru www.irn-bru.co.uk , has a game called gasping grannies . . scary. The pictures thing is fun, though. Not personally a big fan of orange soda, but then I've only had fanta and some generic. & I'm thinking nearly forming ice crystal orrrange soda with the right kind of vanilla ice cream, would make either the float equivallent of a 50/50 bar or an yummy orange milkshake (basically a variation on milkshakes involving soda instead of milk, in a blender), if I was ever in the mood. In the US cream soda that I've tried were only light golden or clear, I haven't seen red or green, in the US. As far as brand I've definitely had A & W. It is extremely sweet. Never heard of anyone using it as a hangover cure, but then I've never needed a hangover cure. And I'd have creme soda, any other occasion I'd have soda, so generally with food. I haven't had it frozen, but that does sound good. It'd be easy enough to freeze some, too. L&P sounds interesting. Has to be far better than Sprite or Sierra mist, based on the description. |

mmm i like L&P and particularly like Irn Bru. much to my delight we can now get the latter in a lot of aussie supermarkets. speaking of sweet potato, i just got home from my local supermarket where they were handing out samples of roast chicken and mashed sweet potato with butter and garlic. yummmm. funny how more often than not it's prepared in a savoury style here. just once i would love to try it with cinnamon and sugar. yummm. i plan to visit south africa later this year. i really want to go back to europe or see the US but those are going to be really pricey. i'll have to wait until 2008. i was born in cape town and so have a lot of my parents' friends and my godparents to stay with which will save me heaps of money. i'll have to try and find some sweet potato done SA-style. mmm i can almost taste it now....:slurp |

oh yes and cream soda is generally called creaming soda here and is often pink/red, but i have had a very pale golden coloured one before. i'm pretty sure it was labelled "traditional cream soda". when in a pub/club you would ask for a "pink lemonade". the bartender will pour in some grenadine along with lemonade. |
