I've only ever had green creme soda - didn't even know it came in all shapes and colours until I met you guys! And we definitely spell it Creme Soda as opposed to Cream Soda - maybe the difference is in the spelling? If you chuck in a scoop of vanilla ice cream you have yourself a Creme Soda Float.

Creme Soda also has a red sister, called Sparberry, but that's made more from some form of "berry". If you ask me it is the same basic recipe, they just changed the colouring. I also found a pic of our Iron Brew... (just to show Cassandra that I'm not deranged!)

yep, pink lemonade! :D you go into a pub in australia and ask for one and you'll get a "schooner" of lemonade with a splash of grenadine in it. yummy.

i've seen that "iron brew" around here but have never been game to try it. so it's bad is it? is it a pathetic attempt to be "irn bru"? australia imports a huge number of products from many many countries. a lot of the products mentioned in this thread i have seen around. there are also some "sweets from home" shops dotted around that sell treats from home, wherever that is for their customers. mostly products from the UK and NZ. my dad (british) visits them for his supplies of colman's mustard & twiglets, for an exorbidant price of course . i love twiglets. the taste remind me of vegemite on vitawheats (then squished together to make little vegemite "worms" hehe mmm). think i have to find a pic for this.....

we call a scoop icecream in soft drink (what we call carbonated drinks here) a "spider". hahaha, never realised what a silly name that is until you're forced to really think about it.

Nice pic, Lis, though I'm not feeling quite so hungry now that I've seen the worms!

microsofty, if you had read the link I posted earlier then it actually mentions the SA spelling. I've edited it down a wee bit:

"Cream soda ......
North America
In the U.S. market, it is often clear or colored brown and vanilla-flavored, but pink, red, and blue are also relatively common. Clear, vanilla-flavored cream sodas are sometimes called Swiss cream soda. Canadian cream soda is often pink, and has a unique taste somewhat reminiscent of grenadine, but clear versions can also be found.

Australia
In Australia, cream soda is generally known as creaming soda (and sometimes creamy soda) and is pink, much like the Canadian version. Australians are also able to enjoy the American "brown vanilla" version as it is also made and marketed locally. In addition, there is a bright yellow type of cream soda .....

United Kingdom
In the UK, cream soda was traditionally served with a dessert-spoonful of vanilla ice cream floating on the top, but this has become a rarity. It is vanilla-flavored, slightly glutinous and has a uniquely thick, "soft" and long-lasting foam.

Europe
Another variety is one referred to as Italian cream soda. This is usually a mixture of carbonated water and Half and half or cream combined with vanilla syrup. Ratios vary widely, but the taste is usually that of sweetened, flavored milk.

Asia
If you order a cream soda in Japan, what you'll get is basically an ice cream float made with melon-flavored soda topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream ....

Africa
In South Africa, Cream soda is sold under the name "Creme Soda", and Coca-Cola produces some under its "Sparletta" brand. It is green in color and has a vanilla flavor.

Caribbean and Latin America
Cream soda is usually served as a "red pop", particularly Fanta's Red Cream Soda.

New Zealand
This is known as Creaming soda, Ice cream soda, or cream soda, though the flavor changes are negligible. It is usually clear or a white opaque.

Netherlands
Has only one brand and is caramel colored.

I have no idea what Irn Bru tastes like, but our Iron Brew is a 50:50 mixture of our Creme Soda and Coca-Cola. If that sounds OK to you, then I'm sure you can give the Iron Brew a chance. Personally, I don't like the stuff - I prefer my Coke to be clean, just like that. Especially if it's ice cold and you gulp it down on a hot summer's day until your throat burns and your eyes start to tear up from all the gas. Best way to have Coke in my opinion.

vegemite on vitawheats (then squished together to make little vegemite "worms" hehe mmm)

Now that looks positively disgusting! We used to do the same thing with Beefy Bovril on Pro-Vita... same effect. However, we never had an official name for it!

Cassandra

microsofty, if you had read the link I posted earlier

I sincerely apologise, I haven't read it. But the fact that they say it tastes like vanilla is news to me - it tastes nothing like vanilla! It's got a taste all of its own, indescribable.

hhmm, i might just give that Iron Brew a go, i'll try anything once. Irn Bru, to me, tastes somewhat raspberry-like. a close friend of mine is rather obsessed with it, though she IS a scot who has lived here most of her life so anything she can get from home, she delights in.

YES! the way you described gulping down an ice cold coke is exactly how i do it when all i want in the world at that moment is an ice cold coke :D hehe.

yeah vegemite worms look soooo gross, but trust me it tastes better than it looks. oh and on the topic of bovril, it was also mentioned pages and pages ago but yes, we have it and yes, we use it. i have the slight advantage of my dad being british, so that has a big influence on what we buy/eat. i'm sure if i mentioned bovril to one of my very ocker friends, i would get a blank look in response. i use bovril mainly for cooking, like the other day i put a spoonful of it in my shepherds pie mix. mmmm, beefy.

lisa that looks tasty, but it's not the pink lemonade we can get here. i have searched high and low and just CANNOT find the picture i'm looking for. look now i'm just going to have to visit a pub tomorrow and order a pink lemonade! tough job but someone has to do it ;) hehehe. in the meantime, imagine a very raspberry tasting very red looking glass of sprite. mmmm i feel like some right now.

as for what creaming soda tastes like.......i have no idea but i very much agree that it's out there on it's own as something very unique.

Here in the States one of the best brands of soda is Dr. Brown's. Their cream soda is definitely blond colored. Can't see it through the bottle because they use brown glass bottles. But it made me think of my fav Dr. Brown's....Cel Ray.....you will never beleive it....it's celery favorited and it tastes great!!!!!Dr Brown's Cel Ray soda

The cream soda in north america is red.  In the US cream soda that I've tried were only light golden or clear, I haven't seen red or green, in the US. As far as brand I've definitely had A & W.

I guess I just assumed virtually everything we get in Canada, they get in the U.S. Nice to see we can be unique. Our big brand name for cream soda is Crush. They also do an orange pop which I don't like.

Trust me aj, what I have for breakfast is not at all interesting.

Yeah, I can see that now. btw it's spelled yogurt in north america and pronounced yoe girt. We don't have another bloody vegetarian on this thread, do we? So, you never eat porridge? What has happened to the new generation of Scot? I'm starting to think Buttons is more Scottish than you (or maybe that's just what she wants us to think).
