Thanks notsuchabadgirl. Lisa was exaggerating somewhat about me demanding cream soda in the bar! :lol1 It was more of a suggestion. But yes, I will visit sometime soon to give it a try. :D

Ah, well .... according to my handy spotter's guide to cream soda, that'll make it American then.

and now for something completely different - the word "shag".  i take it it's not considered as objectionable as the "f" word, since it's used so often in BG.

We have a horrible word in Afrikaans for shag, namely "naai" (pronounced: nai). This slang word was derived from the needle's stitching action made by a sewing machine... quite a graphic description!

OKay i just read this thread from start to finish and i have never been more thoroughly confused. lol

Question for any Brits. At the restaurant i work at we have a girl who just started and she's from london. She asked me today if i wanted to go get snookered with her. HUH? when i asked her what she meant she giggled and walked away.
Yes my name is Annie. My hair is not red, i'm not an orphan, and if you break into song i will be forced to hurt you!

Well in this context it would mean get drunk. Snookered can also be used to mean get trapped by (from the snooker term) or fooled by someone. Once heard it used in relation to traffic jams but not sure if that's common or not. :)

There's a guy at my work uses it in that context fairly frequently. Not too sure that I've actually heard it used anywhere else though. I just assumed it was an old fashioned definition.

Is there a song associated with Irn Bru? My nephew seems to think there was one, but I didn't know anything about it. Perhaps from old ads?

Yeah, it's the name of a seabird, kinda of like a cormorant (if you know what that is).

I do indeed know what a cormorant is. I'm a bit of a bird lover. (ornithologist, that is). We have them over here. Actually, so many that they have been considered a pest and hunters have been given permission to "cull" them. I'm surprised they haven't taken the same position with Canada geese. Their crap is all over the lakefront parks.

i plan to visit south africa later this year... i was born in cape town and so have a lot of my parents' friends and my godparents to stay with which will save me heaps of money.

Here's a sneak preview for you:

Camps Bay in Cape Town

:eek I was looking for a pic to show the traditional way that South Africans eat sweet potato, but got sidetracked when, lo and behold, (on the topic of sodas) I found a Sweet Potato Soda... I can't believe!

Has anyone ever tasted this?!

Wow! Great pic, microsofty. Looks absolutely idyllic .... *sigh* .... makes me wish I had the time and money to go travelling!

Can't imagine what Sweet Potato Soda tastes like! Saw it advertised on (http://www.jonessoda.com/files_new/turkey06.html). Bizarrely they also do Turkey and Gravy soda, Dinner Roll Soda, Pea Soda, Antacid Flavored Soda, Cherry Pie soda, Banana Cream Pie soda, Key Lime Pie soda, Apple Pie soda, Blueberry Pie soda. Think I'll just stick to the cream soda, thank you!

What's a dinner roll when it's at home? Does it just mean a bread roll or is this something else? And yes .... we are back to soda (again!)

hehe, i think we're going to find ourselves going back to soda (soft drink as i call it) time and time again!

i was at the shops today and couldn't resist buying a bottle of.....

:D it looks rather clear in this poor quality mobile phone photo but our version is basically just a red looking lemonade.

sweet potato soda.....hhmmm, interesting....

microsofty, you just boosted my desire to visit my place of birth. it looks gorgeous! i'm planning to visit in summer as well, so i'm looking forward to some warm sunny days.

we have dinner rolls here too. they're just small bread rolls served with dinner (more popular at wedding receptions where the roll and bread plate are at your place setting when you arrive).

Hmmm, I'm starting to wonder of this Jones Soda Co. isn't a hoax? I mean, c'mon, Antacid Flavored Soda??

If you're planning to visit during summer (especially December), you can look forward to some HOT sunny days, nevermind warm! I'm talking wear-your-bikini-the-whole-day sunny days!

are you forgetting i live in sydney? ;) lol. got up to 46 here on new years day a couple of years ago. i went to the beach in the late afternoon and still was like this :blob1 running over the sand. ouch.
i hear the ocean off the cape still doesn't get terribly warm enough for an enjoyable swim, yes? i can brave chilly water, but how brave exactly?
one of the homes i'm staying at (probably most of my time there) has a pool so i'll be making good use of that :D
