i hear the ocean off the cape still doesn't get terribly warm enough for an enjoyable swim, yes? i can brave chilly water, but how brave exactly?

Depends on what beach you are. Some beaches have the Indian Ocean passing by and others the Atlantic. If memory serves me right, the Atlantic Ocean is the colder one of the two? In fact the two oceans meet at Cape Point - you should definitely put that on your itinerary - you can clearly see the meeting point (just not on my pic. Well, if you concentrate, you can see the difference in ocean colours on the right and left hand side of the photo). Oh, and be prepared for a very steep climb to the top, using thousands and thousands of stairs. If you're unfit and/or lazy (like me), you can take the bus to the top, but you miss out on a very scenic route. Cape Point is also believed to be the southern most tip of Africa (or the world, for that matter).

*sigh* Isn't SA beautiful?

Oh, and as for water temperatures, at its coldest be prepared for anything between 16 to 20 degrees Celsius.

16-20 is ok, i can do that :)

laterally, CT is about on par with sydney, give or take a few degrees. NZ is further south, chile even further and we won't even mention the icy icy land of antartica!

i am hanging to visit CT.

i am hanging to visit CT.

I'm so excited on your behalf! I'm sitting here, thinking of a "must see and do things whilst in Cape Town" list for Lis...

1. Go up Table Mountain. You can either hike up the mountain (takes about half a day or so, but unfortunately this is not a very safe option) or you can take the revolving cable car, which is a tad bit expensive (well, for the locals in any case). Don't know whether it's fact or fiction, but apparently Table Mountain is the most photographed natural setting in the world. From the top, or even from Signal Hill, you have the most amazing view over the whole of Cape Town and False Bay, even more so if you can experience the night view. Again it is not very safe at night, but if you go up in a large group, you should be fine.

2. If you're into shopping, visit the Victoria & Alfred (or just V&A) Waterfront. From here you can also take a boat out to Robben Island, which they turned into a museum. It's a very exciting and interesting tour - you even get to visit Mandela's old cell.

3. Visit Cape Point. Definitely. It is awesome.

4. Oh, and of course you have to tour the winelands! Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschoek. These towns are part of what is called the "Boland", about a 30-60 minute drive from Cape Town.

Are you planning to stay mainly in Cape Town or venture into other parts of the country as well?

Hmmm, I'm starting to wonder of this Jones Soda Co. isn't a hoax? I mean, c'mon, Antacid Flavored Soda??
Yeah, I thought it was definitely a hoax at first .... but I'm not so sure now. Seems to be a legitimate company in financial circles. Had a bit in Wikipedia as well (not that that's reliable though!) :lol1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jones_Soda)

Nice pics of SA, microsofty. Though I'm not convinced you took that last one yourself! "at its coldest be prepared for anything between 16 to 20 degrees Celsius" ... mmm ... warm!

Have a great holiday, Lis (when it comes).

Nope, 't was a googled image search, quite right. But just why wouldn't I be able to take such pics? I've got the spaceship after all... :)

ETA: I feel a sentimental moment coming up. Can I just say that I really enjoy hanging out on this board - I've grown quite fond of all my virtual friends here... or is this just plain sad?

No I hadn't forgotten you had the spaceship!! :lol1 I just thought Buttons might be too busy counting gates to co-pilot for you. Or have you got cruise mode installed now? In that case I'll expect to see some more pics then!! :D

Well I ought to say plain sad but I won't. What's brought on this sentimental moment? Are you about to disappear in a puff of smoke or something? Have the martians offered you immunity? Or .... have you got yourself a Life? *in awe*

Quite right. Buttons is still on the counting-door mission. Luckily we had a super ultra modern GPS navigation system installed just the other day (along with the iPod...)

So here it is, especially for you, a little piccy I took the other day (whilst steering with only my little finger to test the accuracy of the GPS):

Oh, heck, isn't this the wrong thread to go completely off-topic? Shouldn't we be going off-topic in the "Member Name Musings" thread instead?

'Allo 'Allo' .... are you there microsofty? I shall say this only once ... I have replied to your post in the secret thread.

Anyway I meant to ask Lis/BGEp1,2&3 (or anyone else). Do you actually use rhyming slang much? One of you posted some Aussie words (a while back) and I think there was some slang which sounded very close to Cockney rhyming slang. Just wondered if it was really used much ... or if it was mainly used to impress visitors. :)

Question for any Brits. At the restaurant i work at we have a girl who just started and she's from london. She asked me today if i wanted to go get snookered with her. HUH? when i asked her what she meant she giggled and walked away.
Well in this context it would mean get drunk. Snookered can also be used to mean get trapped by (from the snooker term) or fooled by someone. Once heard it used in relation to traffic jams but not sure if that's common or not. :)

Thanx cassandra much appreciated! :hug2
Yes my name is Annie. My hair is not red, i'm not an orphan, and if you break into song i will be forced to hurt you!

yes it exists but not widely used, as far as i know. however bgep123 is free to correct me there. in my opinion it is used more by real ocker folks, no idea whether to kid tourists or if they're actually serious. where i live we don't get ocker aussies whatsoever. i'd be hard pressed trying to find one.

couple of examples:
apples & pears = stairs.
captain cook = look

lis - what's an ocker aussie. if you've explained it before - sorry. i can't be bothered going back past all those bloody cream soda remarks to find it.

Speaking of lording it over the aussies. I just had to mention that a Canadian won a tennis title at the French Open last week (granted it was in men's doubles - but it all counts). Where have all the Aussie tennis players gone?

And the Scots hope of Andy Murray. Hope he's recovered enough to play Wimbledon.

ummm...so that's why it was in blue. thanks for pointing that out. i'll try to forgive you for showing me up. but i do have a bone to pick with you. right in the middle of all the ramblings about cream soda, i asked if there was a song associated with Irn Bru and you didn't even respond! i was drinking some at my niece's house and my nephew asked me if i knew the Irn Bru song...maybe he was taking the piss, but i thought you'd at least let me know if you'd ever heard of it.

I can always rely on you to give me a hard time, can't I?

Sorry I had noticed your question about the Irn Bru song, I just hadn't got round to thinking of an answer yet! Think there might have been but I honestly can't remember. There was a more recent one around 2001 with a typical 1940's(?) family singing ... and the mother ends with 'even though I used to be a man!' Supposedly it got banned as the mother was shown shaving and that was deemed offensive to transsexuals! (http://www.youtube.com/?v=s8qUrhjHw1U)
