To be considered a true cockney, don't you have to be born or live within the sound of a certain set of bells?

Seeing some beautiful piccies of some nice places around the world got me thinking of the cost of living around the world. When I was in Scotland last year, it seemed like most things over there sold in pounds for the same figure we paid in Cdn dollars (currently it costs about $2.10 Cdn to buy a British pound).

I thought we might compare the price of some similar commodities. One universal product which we can all grumble about is the price of gasoline. In Canada, it is $1.04 per litre. I know it's sold in gallons in the states and that either a litre or a gallon in the states is not quite the same measurement it is in the UK.

Moving on to food - a loaf of plain old 100% whole wheat bread sells for about $1.35 here.

What do you all pay for these things?

My guess is that Canada's not too bad pricewise - probably the U.S. is the best, but I don't know for sure.

We kinda half did this already when we went off topic a bit in the DVD thread! Think we got as far as comparing petrol in UK, SA & US (plus some other foodstuffs).

US gallon is 3.8 litres (UK gallon is 4.5 litres)

1 rand = $0.14 or £0.07
1 pound = $1.98 or R14
1 dollar = £0.50 or R7.1

We regard petrol as very expensive at about R6 (43p) per litre
SA: Roughly $0.84 per litre

Petrol . . is $3.50 =~1.76 GBP for 9/10 of a gallon in Cali .
US (California): Roughly $1.02 per litre

Gas is 3.02 a gallon here. I'm in Arizona
US (Arizona): Roughly $0.79 per litre

Think it averages about £0.95 a litre here in the UK for unleaded
UK: Roughly $1.88 per litre

Canada: $1.04 per litre ........ (aj57,Jun 18 2007, 10:17 PM)

You might need to check my conversions though!

Same as our rhyming slang it is used but mainly by people who live in the bush.

[...]

pork pie - lie

Not uniquely Australian or even Ocker. In fact, I'd go so far as to suggest that the London cockneys thought of it first, though it's regularly shortened here to "porkie(s)" - & used thus in conversation by non-cockneys! ;)

no one said 'pork pie/porkies' were uniquely Australian. how could it be when Britain discovered us only 219 years ago and while pork pies are obviously British? who do you think influenced our language, town names, street names? i could continue listing things all day.
take for example where i live in Sydney.............ST IVES.

I suppose we can go through the exercise again, seeing as our petrol price went up about 2 weeks ago to about R7.20, I think. That would make our petrol price just over $1 per litre now - that is if Cassandra's exchange rates are up to date!

About R6 something in SA, or just under $1. That's an American $ by the way, I have no idea what the exchange rate is between the Rand and the Canadian $.

Yep, the exchange rates are up-to-date (see http://finance.yahoo.com/currency/convert?...&submit=Convert to convert values). Think petrol in the UK is still around what I quoted though.

1 rand = $0.14 or £0.07 or C$0.15
1 pound = $1.98 or R14.06 or C$2.11
1 dollar = £0.50 or R7.07 or C$1.06
1 Canadian dollar = $0.94 or £0.47 or R6.65

where C$ = Canadian dollars

ETA - Sorry, Lis, I forgot to do Australian dollars but you can use the above link to do it yourself! :)

Yes - & no! Traditionally, cockneys were born within the sound of Bow Bells, i.e. those of St-Mary-le-Bow in Cheapside in the City of London (once worked round the corner from there! :) ). Now, however, it's just a general term used to describe a native of London, especially of the East End & speaking a very distinctive dialect of English. ;)

xe.com is fantastic, i use it quite often.

allllrighty.....for every Australian dollar you get....

GBP: £0.43
USD: $0.85
EUR: €0.63
CAD: $0.89
ZAR: R5.99

i almost drove off the road when i saw the price of petrol today. well, i did, i drove off the road into the servo! after my 4c discount (if you spend over $30 at a participating outlet you get a 4c off per litre voucher to use. when dad goes grocery shopping he gives me some of his vouchers) my price per litre was $1.14/litre. i haven't seen it that cheap in a lonnnnnng time. we were averaging the $1.40+ mark for ages.

so with conversions that would be...

GBP: £0.48
USD: $0.96
EUR: €0.72
CAD: $1.02
ZAR: R6.83

Our poor Rand is so weak everywhere... I hope it is still holding out against the Zimbabwean dollar...

I read somewhere the other day that in Zimbabwe a roll of toilet paper costs something like half-a-million Zim dollars! If that's true, it might just be cheaper to use the actual money instead - and you would safe yourself a trip to the store!

Are you banning me? That's just bizarre.

May I suggest 'peculiar' or 'uncanny' as a replacement word before I take my exit?
