I agree, you've got to tell us how Tasmanians became known as two-heads. In Canada, people from Newfoundland are sometimes referred to as Newfies, but you have to be careful with that one too, some people might take offence. On anonther note, there are also different types of football - what they call football in the uk, europe and most everywhere else, we call soccer in north america. north american football is played with all kinds of protective equipment. I think you aussies have your own version, which is pretty brutal if i remember correctly - and very little protective equipment. |

There are 4 "Football codes" in Australia, but soccer should be called football eveywhere as it is a very international game. BTW the word soccer comes from the term Association Football. |

How so? I always thought it came from the posh schools who liked their nicknames, so I'm very interested in an "official" origin. |

Actually I was just in the process of looking it up myself - this is all I could find ... "The word soccer is a colloquial abbreviation of association (from assoc.) and first appeared in the 1880s"(See soccer) |

Queenslands are known as Banana Benders mainly because we produce most (Except Coffs Harbour NSW) of the banana's grown in Australia The Western Australians are known as sandgropers because of an insect that only lives in Western Australia. http://www.abc.net.au/perth/stories/s1372920.htm The Tasmanians are known as two-heads because, well it's not very nice. Since Tasmania is isolated from the main land it is insinuated that they are all inbred hence the two heads. People from New South Wales are known as Cockroach's mainly because of one of our four codes of football. Being Rugby League the Queensland team are known as cane toads and they are known as cockroach's and of course cane toads eat cockroach's. GO QUEENSLAND!!!!!!Can you tell which state I live in? Check out this web site if you would like to know some of our other slang words. http://www.koalanet.com.au/australian-slang.html |

Thanks for that. Definitely much more interesting than the UK.Well, I'm guessing Queensland since you said that in your earlier post and it seems unlikely that you've moved since! See, I do pay attention sometimes!

Now the other Question. Yes we do have four codes of football in Australia. Soccer http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/ Rugby Union http://www.rugby.com.au/ Rugby League http://www.nrl.com/ And Aussie Rules or AFL http://afl.com.au/ Yes, and in none of these codes is protective equipment mandatory. But an individuals choice. The main equipment one would maybe wear is a silicon mouth guard and maybe a soft padded form of head gear, unlike the head gear worn in the American NFL which is a hard helmet. |

woohoo! i'm proud of how well we do in certain sports considering how relatively low our population is ![]() different states in Australia will also favour different codes of football. NSW (the best state ;)) follows mostly rugby union (my personal fave) and rugby league. SA and VIC are AFL mad. Queensland are into both AFL and league. WA, mostly AFL i think as well as union. NT and TAS? don't know, don't care. LOL ![]()
yep, heard of them all! probably not only because where i live but also because i was born in Cape Town. my family lived there for 7 years but moved to Sydney when i was <1 so i don't remember anything :(. we're into South African food for that reason as well. a family favourite is boerewors and i can never get enough drywors. yes i've seen Grapetizer before. there are some South African speciality stores nearby and grape fizz lines the shelves! lol our supermarkets also have multiple shelves dedicated to South African produce, like Mrs Ball's chutney, etc ![]() Australia is heavily influenced by many different cultures. |

MMMMMM Well I wont get into a debate with you Lis about which state is better as we will end up over taking this thread.
Tasmania have a great cricket team, and also a fairly decent AFL league Northern Territory are an AFL state. |

I'm starting to feel decidely sorry for the Tasmanians. Any of you out there to defend yourelves?
What is the population of oz? We're around 35 million in canada. I' m trying to think of a sport that we excel in worldwide. We're pretty good ice hockey players, but that sport is pretty well limited to certain european countries, russia and north america. We've had a couple of fairly decent race car drivers, some good skiers, ice skaters. All pretty much winter sports when I look at it. |

no can't say i have, or even know what that is. what is it? i'm confident i could get it in my 'burb ![]() -----
i'm not sure the internet has reached tasmania yet. LOL, just kidding. well as far as i know i'm the only sydney member on here (who posts that is), which is quite interesting considering we are the most popular city, i mean have the biggest population hehehee. anyway i reckon there's a slim chance of any tasmanians being on here, active or otherwise. any tassies reading this, please feel free to post and prove me wrong!
we have a population of around 20 million. our climate has allowed us to excel at sports that suit it, eg. swimming, surfing, cricket, rugby, tennis. i'm not saying that we are world leaders in any of those save for cricket, but i think we do really well on a per capita basis. NZ is similar in that respect, being very good at rugby and cricket (chris, any others you may like to enlighten me with? :D) we aren't the best at winter sports, obviously because we don't get anything like the winter weather and snow you get. our winter athletes spend most of the year overseas for training. still, we have won a few winter olympic medals which is cool. |

For those with a sweet tooth a koeksister is a must! It is a sweet made from twisted dough that is deep fried and dipped in a syrup solution while it is still piping hot, so that the dough can absorb as much of the syrup as possible. A good koeksister has a crusty outside and a soft, sweet inside. And get this - a small town in the Northern Cape, Orania, even has its own monument of a koeksister that is the main focus when they have their "koeksister festival". Incidentally the first monument was rejected because it was plaited right over left, instead of the traditional left over right. The women of this funny little town believe that “The koeksister is a symbol of the self-sufficiency and endurance of the Afrikaner woman.” (I have absolutely no idea how they made that jump!) PS Wanted to add a photo so that you can see what a koeksister actually looks like, but I don't know how! |
