A very interesting thread that has been started here.

A friend of mine from Australia once told me a good one....

In the US, when you use the word "root", it can mean to cheer for your favorite team...rooting them on or plants have roots.

In Australia, if you use the word "root", it has a completely different meaning. To call someone a "root rat" for example would mean that they are an easy lay, like a prostitute. The word itself means the 'F' bomb.... :eek

Yeah thats true we do use the word 'root' like that. :lol1

In the following context:

Did you get a root out of her?

So did you get a root Saturday night?

It's usually used by the yobbo type of bloke trying to sound cool to his mates on monday at work after the weekend at the pub.

It also means they will 'root' anything and their always 'rooting'.

Yes, we use that meaning of root in the UK too! I can see a lot of red faces in Australia with that one though! So is there an equivalent Aussie word which means to cheer for your team?

P.S. Congrats on the cricket!

ummm.....

"to go for"
"to barrack for"
"to support"

nothing special really, pretty widely used terms :)

"to barrack for"
Not entirely sure .... but I think that means to jeer at a team in the UK rather than support them.

ETA - think I've also heard it in connection with shouting at the ref (referee).

To all the new koeksister fans!

They really are yummy, but I have to warn you that there is nothing worse than biting into a dry koeksister, i.e. one that wasn't properly prepared. It happens... apparently it's a real art to make a proper koeksister! (I wouldn't know, I just eat the stuff or dump it into the nearest pot plant if it happens to be a dry one).

Make a HOTCH in the POTCH...

Glad you said that .... then I won't even attempt to try making it at home. I'll stick to the Fairy Bread ... sounds much, much easier!! :)

glad to see a tassie on board. not to stir things up or anything, but any tassie words used to describe your cousins on the continent? (well, actually, I am tryng to stir things up)
speaking of stirring things up, cassandra, i've seen a couple of dubious comments about the Scots in some of your comments. if you ain't a Scot yerself, them's fightin' words.lol
