Do you think Nikki called Helen at home. And they talked on the phone?

I would probably say no,

I would only say that because I wouldn't think there would be a lot of privacy and the whole thing is a private affair.
Nicki (Xenaclark)

Helen – “Don’t make this any harder for me!”
Nikki – “Yeah must be hard getting angry with someone you’ve snogged.”
Helen – “Oh please Nikki, be serious!”
Nikki – “I want to make love to you all night long…is that serious enough?”

I've often wondered about this one. I want to think yes, but I also think perhaps no, because it would be too risky--call monitoring and all. What's weird is, why didn't Nikki call Helen on her cell phone that time when she called to apologize?

I'd like to think yes too. Like that time she rang to try and make up. I thought it was a regular thing - to Call Helen. Besides I would like to think not all calls are monitored.

I would too like to think yes, well maybe it is a yes because I didn't see her have to use a piece of paper to call after the first time and I know that I can not for the life of me remember a number after ringing it once. I mean it took me over a month to remember my cell number and I still don't have the foggiest what my home number is.

I change my mind. I think she did phone, but I can't see Helen giving out her cell number because Nikki said it was against the rules to have her number in the first place the first time she rang her up and hung up. Actually did they ever really talk or did Nikki hang up every time, but the time she left a message.

I too think she did phone Helen at home. We sort of have evidence of this when Nikki phoned Helen when Dom was there, when Helen said "I'm in love with someone else... that was the phone call." That would sort of indicate to me that they talked on the phone quite a bit - or - maybe they never actually talked, Helen just assumed if the other end hung up, it was Nikki!

I was thinking that Nikki she did called Helen.

Because Nikki has call Helen 3 times before and no one knew about it.

I mean they can talk. They just have to be careful what they say. And since they were careful with everything else. It might have happen.

The scene with Helen and Dominic, as Microsofty described it, made me think when I first saw it, that Nikki had been calling, when they were together. Although, I agree, they had to be careful. It just makes sense, when they were happy and together, aside from seeing each other, & writing, they'd be calling, because they couldn't resist it.

I was thinking about the scene with Dominic too. If Nikki hadn't phoned Helen's house since the first time, then Helen would have no reason to suspect that it would be her calling.

I'm convinced, and happily so. The points everyone made about the Dominic scene are very convincing--it seems obvious that isn't the first time in the post-Sean era that Nikki called Helen at home.

It's interesting, though, because the two phone calls we saw Nikki make to Helen were really emotionally fraught. They weren't at sweet, gooey romantic moments. So there's two possible explanations for this:
1. Nikki only called Helen when it was something really important (probably more than the 2x we saw, but still, not every day just to chat)
2. Nikki called Helen all the time just to chat, but given that this is television, they only showed us the times when it was dramatic.

I just thought of something else, based on abzug's post. Don't know if it's relevant, though. We never see direct contact between Nikki and Helen when it comes to the phone. There is always some "obstacle" in the way in the form of someone else answering the phone: Sean, Dom, the answering machine. Significant? Or is Helen just the kind of person who likes to screen her calls by which ever means available? (I mean for starters, there's really no reason why Dom had to answer the phone that one time.)

... that was the phone call."
I agree with microsofty. That phrase suggested to me that Nikki had called before and also the fact that Helen knew instantly it was her. As someone already pointed out, it's more likely she memorised the number through use. Though I guess they may not have been able to say very much. No-one at Larkhall knew that Nikki was involved with anyone so she must have been pretty guarded at her end. I was surprised in S2Ep12 (when she tearfully phones Helen) that she calls her "Helen" on the phone but I guess she was so upset that she probably didn't think. Someone might have inadvertently heard her or she may have been monitored.

As for prison call monitoring, I think much stricter guidelines exist nowadays. I'm sure I read somewhere that all calls are now recorded and may be monitored at any time. I think it's mainly the Category A (dangerous to the public) prisoners who are very closely monitored. In some prisons you even need to approve the number before you can call.

In 2000 (from abzug's brilliant timeline), I think PO's could listen to some conversations and some could be taped. Not sure if there was any means to record the number. I'm guessing Nikki wouldn't be classed as Category A prisoner. So I guess as long as they were very careful in what they said (i.e. no names), they could have some sort of meaningful conversation. Probably also why Helen doesn't say "Helen Stewart" on her answer machine message!

I suspect that was intentional to emphasis how difficult their relationship was. It wasn't easy for them to talk directly with each other and even then rarely in private.

Do you even need to ask? Of COURSE that's significant! Brilliant observation! And it totally makes sense, because we think of the phone as being a really direct way to communicate with people, but in the case of Helen and Nikki, it's really not. There's a man answering the phone, an answering machine, chaos on the wing (when Nikki left the message), etc. Meanwhile, their letters, normally an indirect mode of communication, are actually much more direct for them. I mean, we assume the letters are at least somewhat oblique (given that they can be read by the prison officers), but they are the medium via which the relationship develops. AND, Nikki does write, and hand delivers, one true love letter to Helen. Which is all very old-fashioned, of course, this letter writing thing, but it's also wonderful, because it's one of the ways we know this is True Love (of the old-fashioned, epic variety), and it's a metaphor for the simultaneous closeness and distance between them.

I have to admit that I was irked when Dom answered the phone. What prompted him to answer her phone. I know that I don't answer my friends phones. Even those that I used to live with. I would not just stand up and go um hey want me to get that for you?

That has irked me.

[...] it's a metaphor for the simultaneous closeness and distance between them.

Now THAT is a brilliant observation! Nikki and Helen in a constant state of antithesis. When they are in physical proximity to each other, they are not allowed to touch, they have to keep their distance. Yet, at the same time they are at their closest when they are apart, thinking about each other (thinking of the scene between Nikki and Barbara when Barbara was telling Nikki about soul mates, you could really see and feel who Nikki was thinking about).
