I agree about the Babs comment. I mean she was in a nine year relationship with someone and you could tell it was not Trisha that she was thinking about when she said that she believed in soul mates... Plus it seems like something she just discovered. |

Nicki (Xenaclark) Helen – “Don’t make this any harder for me!” Nikki – “Yeah must be hard getting angry with someone you’ve snogged.” Helen – “Oh please Nikki, be serious!” Nikki – “I want to make love to you all night long…is that serious enough?” | |

I was even more irked at the bad acting of knocking the receiver off the cradle on Dom's part. ![]() As far as the friend answering the phone, I think his intention was just to hand the phone over to Helen, not actually answer it. |

I would have to say that it still iritated me to no end. Normally when someone recieves a call I exit the room and not knock the phone off the cradle. |

In love with a prisoner

Shouldn't we be blaming Helen for gesturing to Dom that he should answer the phone? That's the part that always struck me as weird. I guess she was trying to avoid the physical intimacy of reaching past him. One other thought: First time Nikki calls Helen (in S1) she hangs up, and Helen decides not to call whatever the UK version of *69 is. Second time we see her call, it's another hang up, and Helen actually says explicitly this time "I hate hangups"--I can't remember if she said this back in S1, does anyone else remember? Anyway, I bring it up because not only are these thwarted or incomplete communications, with Nikki hanging up before speaking, but Helen says explicitly that she hates these incomplete communications. This intrigues me, and I'm not sure what to make of it. Helen's the one pushing Nikki away a lot of the time, and yet, she's the one complaining when Nikki starts to reach out and then stops (ie hanging up the phone before talking)? Why does Helen hate hangups? (Or, does she not feel one way or another about hangups and just says that to Dom?) Is it a broader statement, not just about Nikki, but about her liking people who follow through, who aren't sneaky, who say who they are and what they want? Ie the antithesis of Fenner/Stubby? Is it about Sean/Thomas? Are they the types who "hang up" in the sense of getting her passions going a little bit, but never truly, never all the way there? |

Ah, I hadn't realised that Helen had gestured first. I was sure that Dom actually offered to get it for her (like an over eager puppy). I think you have raised a very good point there, abzug. There must be some significance in that Helen says she doesn't like hangups. I believe her exact words were "I hate it when people hang up." (In S1 she simply said "Hung up" when she heard the dialing tone). I haven't had a chance to look through many of the S2 discussions so I'm probably completely off the mark as usual. I thought that one of the themes of S2Ep12 was communication (or rather lack of) - Helen trying to talk to Nikki, Lifers Group discussion, gossiping about Helen's hot date, phone calls, Crystals letter, Fenner talking to his wife, Shaz talking to her victim's wife etc. This is also emphasised in a lot of the wording ... lots of references to "talk', "spill the beans", "telly" etc. The "I hate it when people hang up" line may have been simply adding to the overall theme but I suspect you're right when you say it is deeper than that! Off to look at the S2Ep12 discussion now ..... |

I think you've hit the nail on the head here. This episode really seemed to be about miscommunication more so than communication with the exception of Shaz and Mrs. Foster. These two actually get through to one another (almost forgot about Shaz and Denny in the loo—who knew Shaz would be such a good communicator?) but everyone else seems to be missing the mark when it comes to their communication skills. Even though Dom finally gets Nikki to realize that she's been a "total arsehole" there still isn't good communication there because the person conveying the message to Nikki should have been Helen. I'm still bothered by the fact that Nikki learns from Dom that Helen is in love with her. If Helen had told Nikki this from the outset instead of Dom, all the angst would have been avoided IMO. Of course, without the angst we don't get the escape and Helen and Nikki don't get to have a night together so the payoff was worth it... momentarily anyway, then we have the disaster that is Series 3—talk about angst and frustration.

Ahh but see this leads us to something else. Since Nikki already declared her Love for Helen S2ep1 we don't know what she wrote in that letter that Helen read alone in her bed with the lights turned down...oops. Anyhow Helen said she felt the same way so Nikki should have some inkling as to how she felt. And I understand where Nikki is comming from because she doesn't want to get hurt. As Helen said prision is its own little world. Emphasis on little. There is not much she can do in there to guard her heart since she already gave it to Helen. Helen though can change her mind and decide she wants a man and who else but the only nice guy in the place. Really wouldn't you rather push someone away then let them tear your heart out, let alone have to watch it. I think it was a defense mechnism on Nikki's part to push her away. Even though she should have let Helen explain herself. Another thing I saw when it started and Nikki mentioned the night with the curry and she asked Helen why she didn't tell her. There was a longer pause then necessary like she had to think of something to say and how week was it that she said to avoid something like this, well this might not have happend if you had just been up front in the first place. whopse another rant. |

I agree. I'd like to think it was a really soppy letter, in spite of Nikki protesting that she's not soppy! I think that's unlikely since Helen said she felt exactly the same. However telling someone that you feel the same way has a lot less impact than actually telling them you love them. Nikki probably felt insecure since Helen hadn't put into words how she felt. And Helen wasn't able to tell Nikki ... not yet. I saw Nikki pushing Helen away more in anger due to jealousy rather than defence. Being locked up and not able to see or talk directly with someone must play havoc with your mind. And we all know how powerful the imagination can be. In prison, Nikki is most definitely a jealous person. One of the other threads had a discussion on this recently (http://z4.invisionfree.com/Nikki_and_Helen...topic=739&st=30) but I can't remember if this scene was discussed. Have you read abzug and bg3655's fan fiction (See http://z4.invisionfree.com/Nikki_and_Helen...p?showtopic=390) on the letters? It's definitely worth a read as they fit in well with the storyline and I think reflect quite naturally what the characters might have said, given the circumstances. I'd like to think the letter was along the lines of what was given there. Keep ranting ......

Thank you for pointing this out, I second that wholeheartedly. The Letters two of our board members fleshed out are well worth the read. |

Based on Helen's line to Dominic, I too have assumed that Nikki called Helen, and possibly didn't even say anything (or maybe just enough so that Helen would know it wasn't an obscene phone call) and they just shared the silence, knowing that the other was on the other end of the line, and they were sharing that moment. Safe, yet emotionally charged. And Dominic wasn't actually answering the phone, he was handing the receiver to Helen. And then dropped it. Also, Helen may have felt that the phone HAD to be answered, because if the machine picked it up, there was a risk that Dom would hear Nikki say something and recognize her voice. |
