My gf and I are doing the art treck in July: Documenta, Venice, Munster Sculpture Park, etc....

We want to make excursions into nature and smaller towns, countryside, and even beaches. We'd like to enjoy ourselves in route, as well as throw a week in somewhere spectacular, inexpensive (it's all relative, I know), and unique.

If anyone has suggestions we'd love to hear your recommendations!!!!!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Hi I'm from Germany, the Documenta takes place in Kassel as you know, that isn't near where I live, but if the Munster you mention is Muenster in Westphalia then I only live 25 miles from there in a small town, which has a lot of countryside, here are forests, lakes and rivers.

Seeing that you're going to visit Germany, I'd suggest visiting Baden Baden which is in Baden-Wuerrtemberg. The nature and architecture are fantastic, it's probably the most beautiful city in BW. They have some great museums there, for example Museum Frieder Burda, they exhibit the art of the XXth century, expressionists mostly. The design of the actual museum is breathtaking. Also, you might want to visit the Baden Baden Museum, there they exhibit sculptures that were made when the city was under the Romans and also contemporary art. The city itself is great, a lot of XVII+ century architecture and also a lot of modern buildings and "innovative solutions".

From Baden Baden you can get to Karlsruhe by bus and street car (40km, a very quick ride and splendid nature all around). Since you said you'd like to visit smaller towns, then the small cities around it would be a good choice. Durlach, Waldbronn, etc., all of which are only a 10-minute street car away from the center of Karlsruhe, are amazing. They're quite small, but all of them can boast XVII-XVIIIth centuries' architecture. The French Elsass is also just an hour away (car only, I think).

Hi ladder,

I thought maybe you could be interested in this. Yesterday I saw a short film on TV about the sculpture exhibition in Münster which starts on June the 16th. There was shown a part of the park and the city centre where also sculptures are put up. The organizers of the sculpture park say they expect between 500,000 and 600,000 visitors to come to the exhibition.

Since you’re interested in art perhaps you know that Münster also has a Picasso museum. Yesterday too I read in a newspaper that the most valuable art work this museum shows now is an aquarelle by van Gogh. The museum did get it as a durable lend.

Except for the art work there is one thing you shouldn’t miss when you’re in Münster, Petra the black swan. She can be found on the lake Aa, which is near to the sculpture park. Petra is there since last year, she fell in love with a white pedal boat swan. She always is swimming by the side of the pedal boat. The winter time she’d spend in the zoo together with her pedal boat swan. Nobody knows where Petra came from since she is an Australian Swan, which doesn’t live in this region normally. Petra’s story went around the world.

Münster is a beautiful Westphalian city; there are many interesting places to visit. I do like Münster very much.

Thanks Lady McB,

We are going to the Sculpture Park, so I'll try to find Petra on the lake if I can.
