Okay since I have been throwing a lot of names around in The MUppEt Musings thread I thought we should get one where you could put a place name you think someone would like to know about.. or if you found out of a place with a funny name or meaning...

So here goes this is what I have to share right now...

In South Africa:

Gingindlovu - KwaZuluNatal
The name in Zulu means - Swallower of the Elephant

In New Zealand:
Whakatane - Bay of Plenty
Okay.. I can't remember the meaning in Moari. It is pronounced Fa-ka-tani
Now if you put a spin on this for afrikaans it means you are doing the deed with your aunty!!

*need to get my head out the gutter now*

We originally did not plan on passing through the town when we were in NZ doing the campervan thing... but when we heard about the place my g/f and i smiled at each other and said simultaniously let's go there!!! So we did!!! Of course the natives (new zealanders) thought we were barking mad when we walked around with these huge grins on our faces... :innocent

Interesting place I went to quite a few years ago........

Devil's Bridge in Mid Wales. We were told it was gonna be like a 45min walk. An hour and a half later, we were still on that damn bridge!

These are the waterfalls of the bridge. Me and my sister decided to get in the water and not leave for a while  Mum and dad were not best pleased.

New thread is just my "cuppa tea".

Zzyzx in the California desert....was originally developed as a health resort out in the middle of the Mojave desert...forget where the name came from...then abandoned and in the last decade refurbished by California State Universities as a desert study center...when I was following desert tortoises around way back, I was lucky enought to be able to stay there for pennies...
Couldn't decide between a pic of the stucco buildings with the fountain in the pond (you know, the middle of the desert with a fountain) or the reverse veiw...went with the latter.

There seems to be quite a few rude but interesting place names in the world :lol1

One's i know of in Scotland are: a town near Inverness called Dyke (the cold version of Lesbos ;) ) and in Perthshire there is fanny hill and fanny burn. Makes you wonder what's going on in a person's head when they're choosing place names.
