In love with a prisoner

The new Alan Ball show is not doing well. I found it clumsy, derivative, & unimpressive: if that's the best they can manage for a brand new show--basically, pulling out a bunch of half-baked tropes from other shows that have done this far better--then I continue to have no conviction they'll do anything decent with Bad Girls. Which I still see NO reason to redo. I'm not going to watch it. I wasn't a fan of GA in any way, but I'm sorry this whole business ended as it did, & agree it was a total fiasco. I haven't seen Season 3 of Eureka, & don't know how long it'll last. It's not perfect--a lot of the sci-fi in the plots has holes big enough to drive a truck through, & the plotting around that aspect of the show tends to be very predictable--but the acting is usually solid (& often just wonderful), the rest of the scriptwriting is clever, and most of the characters, despite the general goofiness of the premise, have depth, & are likable--and adults. It's humane. All of these characteristics set it apart from much of the other stuff I've seen lately (esp GA, where the only grown-up just got shitcanned), & mean that so long as the overall tone of the show remains the same, I'll continue to watch & enjoy it. It has heart, and a lot of charm. (Any show w/Joe Morton as a regular is already leagues ahead: he's always first-rate, just a pleasure to watch.) (And Colin Ferguson, who has a gift for physical shtick, is *great* as lead; an everyman stuck in the middle of a city of semi-autistic nerds. The show can go meta effortlessly with surprisingly effective results by using such an accessible lead: having another character tell him he's "generic" was a brilliant moment. He *is* generic, & represents audience pov really well because of that without it being any kind of insult to us; it's an affectionate moment, which pretty much sums up Eureka's tone towards both its characters and its audience.) |

Thanks for the show recs. I do watch Pushing Daisies and Fringe. PD is supposedly going to be cancelled (thanks again, ABC!) and Fringe is just ok. Every time I watch I sit there wishing it was Mulder and Scully solving the case. And pretty much all of the cases feel like X-Files knockoffs. I've heard Chuck is good--I'll put that on my dvr. But e, Eureka? I've never even heard of it.... |

SIGH. Which why all us dykes loved Brooke Smith's Dr. Erica Hahn character. Do you think if that Shonda showcreator person watched the first three seasons of Bad Girls she'd get it....nah, guess not. Too bad, this supposed coupling was a lost opportunity. The last scene between Hahn and Torres, even though it was Hahn's scene, it was still edited to play off of Callie. She starts the argument (although see my earlier comment about how arguments come around to something else than what they start on), is highlighted doing this hand motion which doubles as pointing a finger, and the she gets the last reaction shot closeup watching Erica walk away. It's about her and given the lines written for her (running back to the man) is why this coupling failed. Like I said....more high school than hospital. All that cutting up bodies in the basement. What's with that? Shows to watch...keeping in mind that I don't watch any regular programing just partake of my screener dvds....catch "BREAKING BAD". That show blew us away. The writing was superb. The show creator/main writer was a Xfiles guy. The acting excellent. Byran Cranston won an Emmy for Best Actor this year. The first season last year was cut short by the writer's strike. They only did 6 episodes. Season 2 doesn't start until next March so you'll have to file this recommendation away. It broadcasts on AMC the same channel as Mad Men so they're onto something. eta: Breaking Bad plays as a dark comedy with some of the aspects of representing the dark side of suburbia like Alan Ball can do so well. The first season is like a miniseries. Best to see the whole thing before continuing as the episodes build rather than are "stand alone." |

I did see season one of "30 Rock" on dvd and hugely enjoyed it. I was surprised "Pushing Daisies" made it back after the writers' strike (I wonder how many shows that killed last season) but it did get something like a dozen or more Emmy nominations from only airing 9 episodes. And I have had "Mad Men" at the top of my Netflix list for months now and it's still on "very long wait." "Breaking Bad" I haven't even heard of. |

Mad Men is fantastic. Brilliant television, and (this may sound strange) one of the few shows which I think accurately reflects office life. This might be because I work in an old-fashioned company with lots of men, and I work with a lot of creative people on projects, but given that most tv shows just show doctors, lawyers and cops, it's nice to have a show which shows businesspeople. |

When I started watching Mad Men - I'm a year behind doing so, dvd only - I saw it as time machine back to my parent's youth. But the longer I am in the corporate world, the more I see the more of the same. I think it captures the trapped feeling. And I was totally struck by the comment made in one of the dvd extras that Jennifer Jones never gets to work with the other women on the series. She is completely shut off in the suburban home - even on the set. |

Abzug, Eureka is character-oriented sci-fi. Dunno what channel: I assume the SF one... though it's also airing in the UK & Ireland, I think. The sf is... meh, usually solid though predictable (take a science premise; spin it out) but the cast is v good, their timing is excellent, esp the leads. S1 is a bit uneven; the network forced the writers to air all their strongest eps first, totally reshuffle the order at the last minute (can we just get rid of ALL sodding networks, huh huh huh pleeeease?!), so a cluster of weaker ones end the season & a few very minor plot-points don't quite follow because of it, but S2 picks up again (except for the main sf-premise, the sf equivalent of the Big Bad or whatever--which was really weak imo), & overall I was, once again, Content. I'm not a sf-person: the fact that it's character-driven is the main draw for me (though the sf-people I've spoken to are mainly digging it). I guess it's kinda like Northern Exposure meets the X-files: weird town in West Buttcrack, The Wilderness, full of geniuses all working for a mysterious & as it turns out, highly compromised scientific Corporation. (I also like this show's politics.) Our lead, a cop, gets roped into working there, & each person & situation is basically stranger than the next. The show is major quirky, but usually avoids Cute (when it gives in to that urge... unhappy results). It's not perfect but it's genuinely warm & very likable. A few of the actors I could do w/out, but--oh, right, lesbian board, heh: the woman who plays the lead's deputy is very good--a lot of highly competent underused Canadian actors here. One of those smoky, mid-range voices, & ah, handles her weapons nicely, for those of you with a Uniform Thang. (Erica Cerra, I think is the actor's name.)Leads: Colin Ferguson--another character actor, steady-working type, lot of cop roles. He's talented & this is clearly a nice coup for him, I'd imagine. He really shines here, very flexible actor--the more I see him the better I like him in this role. And Joe Morton, who shouldn't need much intro--Brother from Another Planet, the scientist in T2, Speed, guest-starred last year (or the year before?) on a House ep; lot of film, some TV (Smallville--Cerra was also in that, as well as the L-word for a few eps). Morton is very recognizable & absolutely always wonderful--he's the reason I gave the show a shot, & one of the main reasons I keep watching. Bottom line, I figured: this guy does not need to do much he doesn't want to, at this point in his career... so if he's willing to put in the work on a weekly TV show, I wanted to see what the draw was. (It seems it's almost impossible to get an even halfway decent sf-show on TV, dunno why: an awful lot to do between balancing elaborate plots, fx, & stories with people we might actually give a damn about. Eureka has some nice fx, but all very low-key, clearly in service to the plots: someone's made a choice abt not pointing to the special effects, which I appreciate.) One of the best pilots I've seen in a long time. Next ep feels sort of empty by comparison, but then it settles in. It's definitely worth a shot if you're looking for something agreeable. Frankly, I can't think of many shows that make me feel a bit better about Things in General at the end of an hour... this one does. |

Grey's is a repeat tonight - big chance for me to see some of the hot topic eps. But I have to comment on the bic pen tracheotomy. I believe that originated with Wonderfalls, an extemely short lived but wonderful series. |

We're a bit slow down south and is now only up to S5E10. I've read all the rants (Erica and Callie were never suited to my mind) - Callie is way too shallow to appreciate someone like Erica. Although I did enjoy Callie's breakdown in the OR - at least it showed a bit of emotion. I guess there's no point in me asking my next question, since you've all stopped watching the show, but I'm going to venture in any case: What's up with Callie and the Psycho Intern? I don't mind spoilers, saves me the time to watch in anticipation (if required). |

The psycho intern (Melissa George) is long gone already. Nothing much happened there - so no big loss. Callie is now flirting with the new pediatric surgeon - first name Arizona played by Jessica Capshaw. They have recently agreed to go on their first date. Things are progressing slowly - which is not a bad thing. |

Hi all, new to the thread (and board) but I figured I should mention I got into Grey's for Kate Walsh (yes, I was that shallow aged 16, sorry) and well, I stuck with it but they lost me at series 4... the DVDs are too expensive and watching Series 5 on TV made me a little angry so I gave up... I also *hated* that Shonda gave us a good, decent love for Alex (Ava) then totally trashed her. Ugh. Anyways, rant over. Sorry. Grey's gets me all moody at the moment. |
