Well, I'm glad she's going to be working, and I didn't think GL was going to be picked up, but it is still sad sad news. |

Good news for Crystal and I think for the Otalia fans too. I doubt she would have taken this job if GL had any shot of being picked up. Now I believe the writers have all the incentive in the world to give the Otalia fans their happy ending. I'm not one who is hung up on a 'marriage ceremony' between them, but given Natalia's faith and history, a commitment celebration with family and friends would be nice. From the get go, to me, the message has been about Otalia being a family and I hope the writers do that idea justice. |

Hello I wanted to pop in and thank you all for the discussion in regards to Otalia. I have enjoyed it immensely. A very interesting and thought provoking conversation. I am unable to articulate myself as well as you all do so I opted to lurk until today. abzug Posted on Jun 10 2009, 08:05 PM
I agree abzug. I am a BPD member and I find it overwhelming too. A lot of fluff which is perfectly alright but they don't analyse scenes and subjects like you do here on the H&N msg board. I plug away at the BPD site because I am a GL & Otalia fan. Started watching in 1978. I have watched Olivia for 10 years and she has been one "bad girl" (no pun intended). Every soap has to have one. She is every woman's worst nightmare in Springfield. The relationship Liv has formed with Natalia is very much out of character and I think it has got her in a spin .... but I like it. This is a story of love in the making so I don't mind the slow pace. Refreshing for a change. To me, it is the journey not the arrival that is the key. I am thrilled with the chemistry that Crystal and Jessica have together. I don't think this story would have taken off without it. It will be interesting to see how Otalia plays out now before GL goes to black in Sept. Pleased to hear that Crystal has been picked up by "Days". An actor has got to keep the "irons in the fire". One has to go where there is work. There are rumblings that Crystal Chappell (CC) and associates are looking into a web story that is along the lines of Otalia. It can't be these characters because of copywrite laws but hey, there are a million stories to be told. CC spoke about it on BP Podcast with Destini. Crystal is very astute and can see that there is a market for a show like this. Look at the BPD membership! I am fairly confident when I say, they will all tune in and that includes me! Once again, many thanks for the Otalia discussion.

I am afraid the answer is simple my beautiful Goddess. Money and Nielsen Ratings. I don't know about you folks but here in Canada we have hundreds of TV stations that cost us a fortune and not one of them has a descent show on. The ones I do like they cancel. Most are running repeats. If I see John Deed, Have You Been Served or I Dream Of Jeannie one more time I just might throw my TV off the balcony. If you aren't into hockey your fracked !! I am sure that is why peeps spend more and more time on the Net or playing video games. That in turn causes the ratings of TV shows to go down and end up being cancelled. So, in order to save $$ the Networks do the cheap alternative ... Reality Reality Shows ... with either celebrities or just plain ole folks off the street that fail every psychological test in the book !! I just don't know anymore. Well, I feel better now I got that off my chest

Just being silly here but Traveller - what is it with Canadians and GL? Is it just about Otalia? I love it - you all show up in great percentages on websites. Do you all just have better taste than the average US American? Oh wait, don't answer that. Course, I live in Calidornia so it doesn't matter. ![]() On a slightly more serious level - today's episode, with Olivia and Natalia cuddling but framed with Rafe in the pivot point - another binary Otalia moment but also another male intrusion and attempt to keep the story all about the boys and not the girls. I realize this is part of how the story needs to be told, but it is incredibly bothersome. The verdict like aspect of CC taking another offer is another nail in the coffin, but I have actually been happier about watching this soap once it had it's end date. I did not look forward to Olivia and Natalia's love being tested by a series of (presumably) male spoilers and all of us watching this show until we are old and rocking on the porch. I want to ask you long time viewers about how you think the summer will play out. Obviously the silly season is on - do you think Olivia will be stewing in angst over the departed Natalia for the next 6 weeks? |

Well Natalia should be on the canvas until the Bauer BBQ - which is the fourth of July. JL is only taking about 2 weeks off post-birth - so is apparently going to be back filming at the beginning of July - so those scenes will start the beginning of August. So depressing Olivia stuff might only be about 4 weeks! (None of this is spoiler stuff - just me guessing) I think Rafe is sticking around and not going with mum - so perhaps Olivia will spend some time bonding with him. Plus, there is some Spaulding stuff that she will likely be involved in - so she'll have some stuff to do for these weeks. Hopefully, we won't have to see her crying the entire time! Interesting convo over here. And yeah I'm another one who is a member of BPD - but tends to avoid it ... I pop in for spoilers and that's about it! |

LMOA Well, we Canadians spend about 6 months of the year with snow up to our wazoo's so we tend to watch a lot of TV. We love a good romance. : We also enjoy the internet and meeting people from around the world. I tell ya, when we are fans ... we do it with gusto.Just being silly .... Between you and me, I think there are a lot of hockey wives left alone far too long between months of Nov - Jun. TV shows like L Word, Bad Girls, Otalia fill the romantic gap By the way, I am not a hockey wife .... just an old, single LLL
Now cagey ... I am not touching that question with a ten foot pole  I agree with you. I found Rafe centered between (in distance) Liv & Nat during an intimate moment extremely intrusive. Probably done that way so it will lead into next weeks confrontation. You see this technique used quite often in soaps. Drives me nuts! As I stated earlier ... This is a story of love in the making so I don't mind the slow pace. Refreshing for a change. To me, it is the journey not the arrival that is the key. I am sure there are a few members on BPD that would hang me from the nearest evergreen tree if they heard me say this but I would much rather create my own Otalia happily ever after than have ...
In ref to how the summer will be played out interesting question. From what I have managed to sussed out, Olivia will have some angst but hopefully GL taped enough Otalia clips to hold us captivated until Jess returns in July. That is my theory and I am sticking to it I just hope they writers don't do a "serious illness or I can't love you story" that leaves us all heart broken. That would really Pi%@ me off. ![]() A few Otalia vids. Nice choice of vids, Traveller. So you got six months of winter and 8 months of hockey? That is a long long spell for flipping the channels on tv. ![]() BPD is a place I go not to. It almost sounds like we should have a recovery or support group here. But then, we might need one just to get through the rest of the summer. How similar do you think this endgame with Otalia is, for those of us watching relatively "live" as to what it was like watching series 3 of Bad Girls, live in the UK? |

I'm with you on this one. (BPD) I think we could have much more honest discussion here with no big purple kool-aid required. As a latecomer to Helen and Nikki (didn't see it until Series 5 was on in UK), I am curious about the answer to this last question. A friend of mine who lived through it live said that many fans thought the writers were going to kill Helen off. I must admit the latest spoilers about Natalia have me more than a little nervous and the spec by many that she is pregnant is driving me to drink. |

If the show were not cancelled and Otalia was going on - she would be pregnant - that is one of the oldest soap devices evah. However, I don't believe that's the issue in this case. Hell, she and Frankfurter slept together in January/February! Plus, I doubt they would go through all these months of hiding JL to suddenly have a pregnancy storyline. I have my own thoughts on why Natalia leaves for a few weeks and its not pregnancy. Bad Girls must have been torture watching live - especially series 3! |

In love with a prisoner
|
<koff> Yo. I been sayin. I had to check with friends to see if I'd been knocked on the head, kidnapped, taken to another country, and drugged for two months only to be returned without warning--as I had one of those Special Soap Hallucinogenic Moments while they started talking about sex w/o having so much as kissed once, first. Then I got a grip & remembered where I was. I'm probably in a minority but the end-date doesn't make me any happier now than it did before. I didn't want to watch forever, but everything I've learned about how soaps work and how supercouples are built suggests to me this story had at least a two-year trajectory. We're basically only getting about 10 months of year 1. Yes I know the build up was from spring 2008 or so (have seen all the material from late 2007 on), but if you start at about last October, when things really began to accelerate... we was robbed. There was plenty of space for any number of developments between this couple and the community w/o having to do the betrayal/angst/affair/baby nonsense. Add to that delays on account of the pregnancy, and trying to hold off after the April 1 cancellation on certain aspects of plotting til things were more clear... and that sure feels like Shortchanged, to me. (Hell, if you look at BG, there's still a two-year trajectory from the start til they first get together, plus the last series where they deal with the fallout/implications of their situation.) The fact that CC is so clearly not only supportive but genuinely interested in continuing, even now, tells me something too. Actors know when to get out of weak roles; seasoned actors, especially. Every sign suggests she wants in, for real--and who could blame her. This role has legs. It is a genuinely big deal. There are actors who work their whole lives and never get half that lucky--right role, right time in the actor's life and career, writers and actors engaging in a mutual process... and the chance to make a difference. Plus it's got to be a pleasure to play, because it's a huge pleasure to watch. (Her voicework is amazing--the thing abt studying with Meisner made total sense when I first saw that. Did you hear what she was doing near the start of yesterday's first scene? Goddamn.) So... we were all robbed. However, I'm ambivalent about the idea of getting a happy ending in this way, have been for awhile. Or--to put it another way: we didn't have to feel grateful that the only reason Series 3 ended as it did was some sort of lucky accident. It was fully intentional from the start. The format didn't get in the way. Shed used and subverted the genre for their own purposes. Here... some of that is happening, but it's happening, at least in part, despite the format rather than because of it. The Otalia story doesn't just push at the edges of the genre's structural confines: it has in fact exceeded its parameters, its mandate. It seems no accident that is happening as the entire genre is dying--it may be that it can only happen because the genre is dying. It requires a massive breakdown in the type of formulaic plotting that defines soap operas. I am very grateful for what we got, here. I am full of admiration for CC's mad skillz. I haven't seen that sort of comedic star-power since the romantic comedies of the late-30s & 40s (I'd give my eyeteeth to see her do something in any other genre, esp an evening drama on HBO or Showtime). But for myself, for many us, really--having to make the best of a shitty situation when you've spent your whole life half-starved for decent media sucks. And is in large part why this recent news was so depressing, for me, anyway: the suckage is cumulative. It's like waiting around for a meteor shower. And we are currently enjoying one. Afterwards, though, there's nothing but the nighttime sky again. Same as ever. It looks awfully dim, in comparison. |
