Oh. My. God. I'm sure if I knew the original poem I'd find that even more astounding, but holy crap, that was awesome. |

I actually haven't seen it discussed anywhere, but my sense is most viewers think Liv is bi if anything. She's had too many relationships with men, and some people can't see past that. I'd love the folks doing the Q of the day on CC's Facebook page to post this as a question. I wonder what the married housewives would say.... |

Retroactive continuity. Basically is the deliberate changing of previously established facts in a storyline. So when the Olivia/Jeffery thing was first introduced - it was shown in flashback as rape. Later when it was retconned - suddenly Olivia was shouldering some of the blame because she pretended to be older than 16 and was drunk. Thus Jeffery only vaguely "hurt her." Another example is from All My Children. At the time of Roe v wade - Agnes Nixon wrote a storyline in which Erica had an abortion. Big deal in those days. A few years ago - the writers retconned it and Erica's doctor during the abortion took her fetus and put it into his wife and that child arrived in Pine Valley fully grown. Yeah. Not making this up. The Ava and Olivia scene today are quite nice. Reva's? Suck ass. KZ cannot act. I don't care how many Emmy's she has - she deserves none of them. |

Abzug & Solitasolano--the original is very very gayboy, lotsa boyparts. Lotsa chanting incantatory revolutionary American anger. Hell, let some lit expert explain it, I don't get poetry. I just kept thinking about the lot of us combing over this soap in our inimitable way and... well, things got a little out of hand. Solitasolano--that has got to be the funniest explosion of emoticons I've ever seen! For reals. Thanks for being so patient with me, guys. I go back to the nice padded room now. eta: augh! read the posts that just showed up as I was typing this. Ohwell. Nothing too spoilery. Thank god O HAD a scene with Ava. Looking forward to it. eta: Abzug Bi? Uh... yeah. Not so much. |

molsongrrrl, that makes sense. Thanks, I didn't understand the abbreviation was in reference to soap opera reframing of s/l reality.Guess it's another late long lunch today after all (see annotated ekny Howl poem). That's what MUTE is for. I use it generously.

I've read my share of Howl parodies over the years, but this just leaves me speechlessly amazed at your awesome powers ek. That the might have been brilliance of a generation of lesbians has been tarnished by it's obsessions with a soap opera is... is... well, given half a mind this could be a serious discussion about modern media. But I am not that twisted. I cannot decide among several which is my favorite - maybe this one for now:
Moloch whose mind is pure machinery! Moloch whose blood is running money! Moloch whose fingers are ten armies! Moloch whose breast is a cannibal dynamo! Moloch whose ear is a smoking tomb! Meanwhile, Moloch is calling me back to work. Damn. |

I have half a mind that someone should send that parody to CC. Somehow I think she'd appreciate it. Perhaps JLH too. I'm going to this panel that they're doing at the Paley Ctr for Media on the finale of Guiding Light, perhaps I can slip it to JLH after it's over. OK, so, before getting to today's ep, in case anyone wants to see gorgeous candids of CC taken today in Peapack, here ya go: http://twitpic.com/photos/swisher65 Nothing spoilery whatsoever--none of the photos are from filming scenes. I guess you can see what costume she's wearing, but that doesn't really tell you anything, other than that they make poor Liv wear blazers even in the middle of summer. OK, on to today's ep. Man, they are giving us such tiny doses of Liv. It would almost be better to see her only once or twice a week but have her be in more than four minutes of an episode. This episode, in particular, felt like it only had about 45 interesting seconds, which was the scene where Liv told Ava about Natalia. As I'm writing this I'm realizing this is actually the first time Olivia (or Natalia) have really come out. I mean, yes, Olivia was telling everyone and their brother back in February and March when she was really confused, but since then she hasn't told anyone at all. And even then, she was only half-speaking it, in a very confused, convoluted way. More recently, Philip already knew/assumed, Rafe found out on his own, Frank was told by Doris, etc. Given all that, I think she rocked it. I would have liked more in the nerves department, but she's so strung out by this point I can understand why she doesn't have so much fear around this issue of telling people, speaking the words. But it was kind of interesting to see her sort of hint at it, and Ava not getting it, and then hint some more, and still nothing, until she finally has to really come out and say it. Maybe what I liked most about the scene, though, was the way they preserved the mother-daughter dynamic at the end, with Ava insisting (in a sort of simple, child-like way) "Go get her!" And even when she's being sensitive to her mother's emotional state, and Olivia is admitting to being a wreck ("Mom, are you ok?"/"No, honey, I'm not") she's still speaking in a controlled (not scary) way, and she's the one reaching out and touching Ava almost to reassure her, not the other way around. I guess given what a crappy mother Olivia was last week, this is showing she's trying to pull it together to at least be able to hold on to the maternal relationships which she's always been good at, even when destroying all of her other relationships. The scene at the end, I'm not sure what to make of it. I mean, from spoilers I had thought it was going to lead into a confrontation with Rafe, but Olivia just did the adult, mature thing and walked away. I did like how she told Gus she'd make Natalia happy, and she sounded like she believed it, so she hasn't totally lost all her self-esteem. How funny that she's going to Gus for help, after last year at this time when Natalia believed Gus was speaking to her through Alan and telling her that Rafe would be ok if he returned to Springfield (which he wasn't, he wound up in jail for a year). I mean, she's talked to Gus before, obviously, most notably the day of the wedding, but it's the "in case you have any pull with Natalia" aspect which was so not-Liv, and yet, felt like where Liv would be at this point. |

Hey Cagey, glad you got such a kick out of it too! Thanks very much. Guess I've found my calling then, huh. Gulp.
Damn is right--you even went back to look at the original! Whoa nellie. (Invite Moloch out to lunch with Beezlebub. Go to the restroom & duck out the back door.) What's this final panel thing, Abzug? Who's gonna be there, what're they doing, etc?
Somehow... I don't think CC'd mind it, either. Feel free, should you be so lucky.I'd post intelligently about today's ep but... uh... Fuck me, that shot of the thumb ring has done very bad things to my concentration. Uh. Yeah. Right. Back later. :ph43r: Could this woman possibly have dykier accoutrements? I mean, I'm just asking. |

This is the program: http://www.paleycenter.org/summer-2009-guiding-light It's sold out, unless you're willing to sit in an adjacent auditorium and watch it on closed-circuit tv, which I was NOT willing to do, and therefore called in a favor from a business associate (thus revealing myself as a Guiding Light fan in a professional context--VERY embarassing!). But I figure, what the hell do I work in ticketing for if I can't get myself into sold out events? The one sure thing is that CC will not be there. She's starting filming on Days that week, if you can believe it. The woman is a workhorse--it sounds like she's taking a weekend in between GL and DOOL and that's it. But even without CC, I still want to be there. And I want to hear someone (possibly me?) ask them why the FUCK Olivia and Natalia didn't get to kiss.
Oh, this is beyond easy. Send it to this email address: Crystalchappell@officialglfanclub.com |

You could also post it in the Messages for CC thread on the BPD, e.g. It's too large to *tweet* of course. Abzug, I enjoyed your read of the O/A scene from today's show (I hope that didn't 'spoil' you, e.) which I thought was quite lovely and outstanding. And PLEASE do ask that very question on behalf of all of us. I shall be very interested to hear what the other actors have to say about that. CC may also presumably be shooting something for the webseries before she leaves NY (something with JL, perhaps?) |

Very droll, actually! lucky you though.
Uh. That's not a spoiler, right? I mean, we still have almost 7 weeks to go? Please tell me that's not a spoiler... <starting to snuff disconsolately> Thanks for the address but--really, I couldn't possibly. --e POSTING in BPD? Please. You trying to give me a stroke here? Besides I'd just get banned or flamed. Snort. |
