abzug - if you watched the teaser at the end of today's ep - did you think Nat thought it was remotely possible she could be pregnant?

I am concerned that someone is going to try to de-gay her, which will cause Olivia and Doris to saddle up and go to her rescue. And that is an idea I am completely in love with. :) The daring duo, not the de-gaying.

I am also concerned about all the folks on other boards who have reached a level of pure furor at the sl, GL, the producers and writers for something that might never even was supposed to happen. In the back of my mind is Helen saying to Sean: "Joke".

Read this and then see why my rose colored glasses are off for good. The best I think we can hope for is a new 'family' at the end consisting of Olivia, Natalia, Frank and the Frankenspawn to be.

Soap Opera Weekly founder Mimi Torchin weighed in on her favourite soap super-couple Otalia, their lack of physical contact and the reveal that Natalia will find out she’s pregnant with Frank’s baby. She opines, “I just don’t know how a love story that started out so brilliantly — just like hundreds of great heterosexual soap opera love affairs but with a delightful twist and took us so willingly and eagerly through the real-time journey as these two woman discovered, to their great surprise, that they loved each other ‘like that’ — could have turned into such an overwrought, outdated cliché about the pain and tribulations of ‘forbidden’ love. This is 2009, for heaven’s sake! These adult women, after months and months of emotional foreplay, have not even really kissed! It’s like a tickle in your nose that never becomes a sneeze: maddening. Making Natalia pregnant is the last straw, despicable! It’s the laziest, cheapest, most annoying and enraging plot point on daytime since Erica’s unabortion on AMC! Can you tell how much I hate it? There were at least 10 other ways to deal with Jessica Leccia’s (Natalia) maternity leave. A nice little coma (thanks perhaps to some selfish act by that spoiled brat, Rafe, for example) would have been perfect.”

Torchin continues: “Here’s the thing in a nutshell: Have some cojones, Ellen Wheeler. The show is already cancelled. What have you got to lose? Be brave, be true to Olivia (Crystal Chappell) and Natalia’s courageous commitment and their wonderful, unusual (for soaps) love story and let’s consummate this relationship! We don’t have to see it happen on-screen; the build-up and afterglow will suffice. Give us a real, romantic kiss and the well-deserved, happily-ever-after these two wonderful characters deserve and we, the audience, will be happy as well. Go out with a bang (or a bell, as in wedding?) with Otalia, not a bloody whimper!”

I agree, Nat seemed to think that it wasn't possible she could be pregnant, so I guess that's reassuring.

Marymartin, I read the same piece you quoted, and I understand why you share the writer's frustration. I guess in certain ways I do too, but I'm not convinced they've ruined the story. There have been moments of better and worse storytelling the entire time, and I've found that my distaste grows at the climactic moments (the wedding, for instance), which I suspect is because I'm not a fan of the soap genre in general. I would be really really sad and disappointed if the writers completely screw up this story, but I would still be glad for the months of really amazing storytelling which happened, particularly the stuff from December 08 through March 09. I also think, when this is all over and I go back and watch months of clips on YouTube in one sitting, I'll have a much different perspective on the story, and what was done well or done poorly.

I know many BG fans who watched S3 as it was broadcast had a really hard time with it, and were very angry at Shed. But since I watched it on DVD in the course of three days, I enjoyed it very much--the downs didn't stay with me, because I just put on the next episode until I got to the happy ending. :)

abzug: Thanks for the perspective. I agree, those periods were the best writing which I guess is why I feel like the rug has been pulled out from under me with this tired soap plot device being thrown in at this point with the end coming so soon. I hope Wheeler or her assistant reads the above and if, she hadn't planned to resolve this with some cajones before, she does so now. At the end of the day though, it's their vision, their characters and their story. I can't do anything about it.

Sorry cagey, and anyone else holding out hope that Natalia isn't pregnant.

Spoilers for tomorrow's ep:
Natalia waits for the results of her pregnancy test. Olivia and Emma prepare to make the rice krispie treats. Olivia tells Emma to go upstairs and check on Natalia. Natalia panics when Emma asks what she's doing. Natalia shoves the pregnancy test in her purse without looking at it and comes out of the bathroom with a happy face. Olivia, Natalia, and Emma get caught up in the family fun baking project. Once she's alone, Natalia takes out the pregnancy test and sinks to the ground. Buzz notices how happy Olivia looks. Olivia admits to Doris that she's a little nervous about coming out at the BBQ, but she can't imagine her life without Natalia. Natalia admits to Blake that she's pregnant with Frank's baby. Natalia has blood taken by a doctor as Blake sits by her side. Natalia can't believe it when the doctor confirms she is pregnant and already a few months along. Natalia answers a call from Olivia. Olivia says she can't wait for all of them to walk into the BBQ together.

TYPO, :eek
abzug.

Typo. I insist.

I told you, even if they show up with a baby on 17 September, I will not believe it.

Nope.

Actually, ek worked through some stuff that made me feel much better.

Of course, that will be blown out of the water tomorrow.

And, if this should come to pass, as in, if there is a baby involved, I cannot deny that it is completely in line with the soap expectations. Otalia cannot become a new family in Springfield without a wedding or a baby. Since the former is certainly not going to happen, why not the latter? I've been saying all along that a soap is a very conservative genre - I just hate it when I might be right.

Sweet jesus, maybe I need to go pray for a really long time and see if my love of this soap opera is a passing fancy, or if it is really and truly what god means it to be. Not to engage in further speculation as to what happens next.

She did? Can you persuade her to post it to the board so all of us will feel much better? I think we'll need it come tomorrow....

Lillian thinks Phillip should admit to his family that he's dying but Phillip doesn't want to share the bad news on the 4th of July. Rick is at the grill while Blake helps prep. Frank, Daisy, and moody Rafe show up with food and drinks. Bill and Lizzie arrive with games. James explains to Lillian that he doesn't want to miss his trip, but Lillian wants Beth to stop Alan from taking James. Lillian pretends to be Alan's assistant and informs the pilot that Alan is postponing his trip. Alan storms in and announces his trip was cancelled because the pilot took the day off. Phillip asks James if he wants to come to the BBQ but James says no. Phillip wants Daisy to convince James to join them at the BBQ. Everyone is excited to see Billy and Mindy arrive. Danny and Michelle get happy greetings from everyone. Lillian is tearful when she sees Phillip arrive. Daisy and James play video games as Daisy tries to convince him to come to the BBQ. Michelle gets Bill thinking about starting a family with Lizzie. Beth is thrilled to see Mindy. Billy takes a picture of the four musketeers: Mindy, Beth, Rick and Phillip.

Olivia is excited about her independence day and promises Emma that it's going to be a very special day for their family. Natalia, exhausted, picks up a pregnancy pamphlet and answers a call from Olivia. Olivia asks if Natalia is nervous about having the talk with Emma, and doesn't notice that Natalia is distracted. Natalia explains to Olivia she's running late and won't have time to talk to Emma beforehand. Meanwhile, Natalia sees a display of baby diapers and is overcome with emotion when she suddenly spots Frank. Frank informs Natalia that Rafe is at the BBQ and misses her. Natalia thanks Frank for being such a good man. Everyone notices how happy Olivia seems. Olivia thanks Frank for getting Rafe to come and says Natalia should arrive soon. Natalia admits to Father Ray that she's pregnant and starts to break down. James arrives and watches Phillip with Emma and Olivia. Natalia sees that Olivia is calling her and turns off her phone. Father Ray suggests that Natalia go away for awhile to figure things out. Olivia says she can't wait for tomorrow to come. Emma runs up to them and sweeps them into the party.

Marina assures Mallet that even though Henry has Shayne's DNA, Mallet is his father. They all leave for the Bauer BBQ. Shayne decides to spend the 4th with Reva because neither of them wants to face everyone at the BBQ. Josh and Matt arrive at the BBQ and Matt says they came to find Josh a date. Rick fails in an attempt to hit on Olivia. Marina and Mallet arrive and introduce Danny and Michelle to baby Henry.

Father Ray suggests that Natalia go to a retreat to think things through. Olivia leaves a message for Natalia and is concerned that she's not there yet. Natalia divulges to Blake how confused she is and says she's leaving town. Olivia checks with Blake to see if she knows where Natalia is but Blake covers for her. Cyrus and the Boudreaus arrive. Leah puts a chef hat on Rick. Cyrus puts his arm around startled Mel as Rick comes over to them. Reva is getting ready for Hawk's visit when she sees a photo of her and Jeffrey. Reva can't calm down and throws the picture as far as she can, then starts ripping down the decorations. Phillip and James are about to win the 3 legged race but they fall and Cyrus and Remy win the game. Post-race, everyone heads for the food and drinks. Emma is disappointed that Natalia is late. Rafe bumps into Natalia and admits to her that he tried going to the BBQ but couldn't take the idea of seeing her with Olivia. Natalia admits she's confused too. Rafe apologizes for having a hard time accepting her relationship with Olivia. Blake informs Olivia that Natalia isn't coming because she doesn't want to see her right now. Rick catches Leah, Robbie, and Hope eating apple pie from the pan and he joins in. Michelle and Rick admire their children. Mallet explains to Shayne that he knows about Henry and hopes things between them won't be weird.

Reva is re-hanging the decorations when Hawk arrives. Reva and Hawk grill chicken outside when Josh drives by and waves at them. Mel admits to Michelle that it's strange not being a Bauer anymore and says she loved the family they had. James is upset when he overhears Phillip thank Daisy for convincing James to come to the BBQ. Phillip wants the group to know how lucky he is to have had time with all of them and wishes it would never end. Beth takes over for Phillip when he gets too emotional. Rick raises his glass to the group and they share a toast. Phillip looks around and sees all his friends around him. Olivia runs to a secluded spot and tries to hold back the tears. Blake picks Natalia up and makes sure Natalia is sure of her choice to leave. Olivia sinks to the ground and cries.

I've gone all giddy with the prospect of what might happen next. Keeping in mind that I am also the one who lives in total baby denial.

Maybe finally the story will address the big elephant in the room, which is, not only Nat's religious convictions but also Olivia's issues.

Although I would love to see Liv storming the doors of the nunnery shouting NATALIA, as in Street Car, or even talking to her as she stands in a balcony above, ... oops, sorry. The story has been sexless because much as Nat wants to go there, she just can't.

But whoops, she went there with Frank. Maybe it is now clicking in for her: love, sex.

What an opportunity this is for the characters to work through the religion stuff. Get Olivia past her Mother issues, get Nat past her easy surface take on what it means to be with Olivia and actually fess up to what it should mean.

I am hoping that Nat really does some good work in the convent and figures it out for herself so she can come back to Springfield a whole person who knows what she wants. Which would be Liv. Of course, she will have a baby along, unless she leaves it with the good nuns who will find it a home and 17 years later that child will return to Springfield ... aren't you glad in a way, it will be over soon?

Olivia is worried about Natalia but covers and explains to Emma that she must have had a very good reason for missing the BBQ. Olivia goes to the station to report that Natalia is missing. Frank thinks Natalia got cold feet. Olivia visits Father Ray, who says that Natalia saw him and asked him not to inform Olivia where she was going. Olivia walks to the front of Natalia's house and tries to write a note but can't and throws her paper and pen in frustration.

Bill and Lizzie's beach plans are thwarted when Beth invites Lizzie to go shopping, and Billy invites Bill to spend some time with him. Josh thinks they should invite the Spauldings to Bill's bachelor party but Billy doesn't want them there. Billy invites Phillip to Bill's party and says Phillip and James are welcome. Lizzie is a little impatient as Beth leads her to the restaurant. However, Lizzie is surprised and touched that everyone gathered there to celebrate her wedding. Bill is excited to play pool with Billy. When the guys arrive, he thanks everyone for surprising him with the party. Phillip and Alan arrive. The guys stand around awkwardly, not moving or talking much. Bill calls Lizzie and they plan their escape from their parties. James arrives. James overhears Bill explaining to Billy that James is arrogant and just a kid so he punches Bill. Phillip leaves to pick up Olivia, but gets a call from Josh while he's gone. Billy punches Alan after Alan says he doesn't want Lizzie marrying Bill. Phillip walks in to see Alan and Bill holding ice over their eyes. Phillip says he'll clear everything up. Alan says he's not coming to Lizzie's wedding and can't give her his support.

Ashlee asks Reva where Dinah is but Reva says she has no idea and she just wants to be left alone. Suddenly, Reva gets a call from anxious Jeffrey. Jeffrey informs her that he doesn't have much time left.

Power lesbians, Olivia and Doris, off on a road trip to storm the nunnery and rescue the fair maiden. Something at least to look forward to in the s/l at least. When Father Ray tells Olivia guests aren't allowed....Olivia's non-verbal reaction...rule doesn't apply to Olivia Spencer.

I didn't need spoilers to see where this bit was going. LOL.

Olivia and Doris are ready to head out on a trip in search of Natalia. Olivia fails at the first attempt to find Natalia at one of the retreats and they head off to their next stop. Olivia demands that the woman let her inside then cries out Natalia's name and begs her to come out. Olivia is defeated and decides to go home.

Lizzie thinks they should postpone the wedding because Jeffrey's plane went down but Josh insists they go ahead with it. Bill is still processing the news that Dinah might have gone down with Jeffrey. Lizzie announces to Bill and Billy the good news that Dinah is alive. Lizzie orders Bill to invite Dinah to the wedding. Dinah accepts Bill's invitation. Lizzie and Bill start kissing but Lizzie stops them and says it's bad luck to sleep together on their wedding night.

Mallet thinks that Edmund is probably still alive, framed Reva, and sabotaged Jeffrey's plane. Josh and Shayne are worried that Reva is going into deep denial about Jeffrey. Josh learns from the FAA that they've established a search area but it's the size of Texas. Reva informs Josh that she's going down to the search area to look for Jeffrey. Josh is conflicted about going with her. Reva is furious that Mallet still believes Jeffrey killed someone and explains again that Jeffrey sacrificed himself to prove that Edmund was setting her up. Mallet wants to go through the inheritance that Edmund left Henry for evidence but Marina confesses she burned it. Dinah assures Shayne she understands that he wants to stay in Springfield to protect Henry from Edmund. Mallet notices a crack in the plastic tubing of the stroller and realizes it might be the murder weapon. Reva leaves the house with Colin to search for Jeffrey. Reva is shocked to see Josh waiting for her outside, ready to go with her on her search.

then cries out Natalia's name

Oh sh*t, honest, I totally guessed with the STELLAAAA!!! that I posted in the regular OTALIA thread....it just seemed SO obvious with O's reaction the that rude priest guy.....I didn't mean to ruin/spoil anything...I was just psychic on this one this time.

Of course, since it's weeks before Natalia shows up again...of course she doesn't come out (so to speak). Pour Olivia. Is this going to make her madder or sadder?

I want to ask you all about Streetcar Named Desire references. Is it possible that younger folks do not understand the impact of Stanley screaming *Stella*? The sexual lightening bolt that it is and how it drew Stella, leaving her unable to resist?

Reading elsewhere, TWoP, I've noticed that some posters are very concerned that this

Quote:

Olivia demands that the woman let her inside then cries out Natalia's name and begs her to come out. Olivia is defeated and decides to go home.

is a sign of weakness, desperation and further grovelling on Olivia's part. Meanwhile, other more literate and perhaps mature posters (aren't we all?) seem excited ay the prospect of Olivia on full throttle letting all the emotional and sexual energy that has built up over the months out.

Obviously, Natalia is not going to glide down the staircase entranced by Stanley, erm, Olivia.

And, as these folks predict, it could be a horrid mess of Olivia in complete collapse and Doris having to drive her home.

But is this one of the references that I always thought was obvious and now has slipped into History? Like solitosolano immediately picking up that this would be the next necessary beat in the story.

***

And as long as I am here - what about them twitter pics from the location? I guess GL is going to have to hire extra security for their location shots. I have a friend who works near Peapack and mentioned seeing a film crew in a parking lot - which I thought was mildly cool. Then these gals who ambushed the production, took photos and now have left us to speculate endlessly about JL's belly: real or fake.

Of course, it is probably only we happily delusional lesbians out there who are hoping Natalia isn't really pregnant.
