Double post. Comment five: Ya know that last line of dialog, that Owen throwaway, "Oh brother", was really corny....Ok, some people didn't catch that the character was Gina's brother, but really. Let this be my first official dialog complaint. Speaking of dialog, I noticed there was no re-recording credit in the end titles. That means that editor Hope did all the "sound mixing" in FCP for what it's worth. Hard always to get levels even if they weren't to begin with. I don't recognize one credit in the IMDb of production mixer Lee Ascher (sp?). Still not bad for in computer job. Now that I have a subscription, I can't figure out where/how to get the BTS. What a retard. Help! ETA: Duh. Ya go to the "Watch Venice" link. That I did. I watched the BTS. I didn't listen. |

1) I love, lovelovelove, reading technical stuff about tv, film, etc. So these comments my eyeballs are always allll ovah. More, moremore! Seriously. 2) I PM'd you abt your sub. Bottom line: you can watch on site but it's highly proprietary: you can't save it. You have to be logged on to rewatch. 3) Oh. Ok, reading as replying. I found it worth watching with sound, in a funny way. They're relaxed, it feels easy, & I also love watching stuff in-process, getting a feel for how people work. (Even if still on-camera.) So I'd say it might be worth another look-see.

It's weird--they're postponing the next ep, so we get nothing this Friday, then we get an ep Dec 18, and then it's Xmas Day and New Year's Day the two Fridays after that. Are we going to get eps those days? Or are we going to have to wait til January? Because then it would be like 8-9 minutes of material for all of the month of December. Not enough to keep people interested and engaged I think. |

It just seems a shame. It's like watching your neighbor do a start-up, & you know all this stuff to tell them but they don't want to hear it. Everyone's gotta make their own mistakes. Smarter would've been just to say ok! We screwed up, we need to regroup, we'll be open again after the holidays--thanks so much for your patience. If you address what's bugging people--even when they've spent money--they can be surprisingly tolerant. Continuing to promise what you can't put out is different: then they get pissed. So it's like... basic customer relations stuff, on top of being technically inept. <argh> |

Not so technical. I meant to emphasize that the show doesn't do a real sound "mix"of the audio, rather editor Hope and anyone who is helping her with the editing just fusses with the sound and music in FCP. Aside from EQing, as you all can "hear", it's hard to get volume balanced between different sound takes and mx because there's no real base line reference to how loud any piece of sound is relative to another in that system. Then of course, the music is from a clean studio mix so it can cut right through. I am not familar with the sound editing capabilities of FCP. I'm assuming they can have multiple tracks, the problem comes when they are all combined together. It's had to balance on small speakers and know how it's going to replay on even smaller ones like ear buds. Not technical, but editorial, my over-trained listening brain goes crazy at the background shifts in ambience up on the roof top from wide shot to MS of Owen. The trafffic totally cuts in and out. Ok then there's the Ani sitting behind Gina scene. From BTS pics and credits it appear there is only one boom operator (and therefore one mike). When Ani is leaning back with separation between she and Gina, you can hear how her voice is slightly muffled. Well that's because the mike is directed in front of Gina (notice how the off camera computer key clicks are louder than either vocal). When Ani leans forward and talks over Gina's shoulder, her voice quality is finally the same as Gina's. Don't know why the boom wasn't aimed a tad back. Boom shadows perhaps. Gaffer Jeff Siljenberg is the one who's making it all look pretty. Can't underestimate the value of the guy who does the lighting. Hope you're enjoying this ekny. This last production note is definitely NOT technical in any sense. LOL. They list 3 hairstylists....guess it took that many to get that "wind swept" look up on the roof top cafe. he. Is it epi 2 yet? ETA: ooh, just now counted not one but two tracking shots in the new V teaser....getting fancy and bold. ETA2: The muffling of Ani's voice when she leans back is because she is speaking right into CC's back/body. With the mike in front of CC, her body acts as a baffle, hence muffled. Production mixer Lee Ascher most likely heard it but, as usual, sound is given the least time to fix or rehearse anything. The joke on the set is the yell "waiting on sound." Speaking of which, if anyone is getting paid, I would think it was AD/set runner from GL, Kristen Doherty. I'm assuming that's her voice in the beginning part of the BTS. |

Don't get me started. But then again I can't help it. I guess FCPro / Sound Studio 3 doesn't have volume graphing capabilities. If you're not going to cut out and fill those clunky off camera metal bangs of Gina and Owen moving around in those metal bar stools, at least volume graph down the peaks. That sort of thing distracts from the drama at hand no matter what. Metal clunks are not part of the story, if you know what I mean. The thing is, once you take sound crap like that away, the dialog and words trickle into your brain unimpeded just as they should. See. Don't get me started. |

I'm surprised, I thought Avid & FCP were the creme de la creme, no? They're used by regular studios. So... you're saying that's Nice & all, but basically--you still need a separate program for sound if you want to do high-end stuff? I so intend to get you started!

Ahh, and some people drive Kias (no offense) and some people drive Lexus. Let's pare this back to just plain, "you still need a separate program for sound." The answer is 'yes'. You should use Protools and have a sound mix of all the elements. As far as what V3 is using for post production for the web, I think it's just fine for what they're doing. Please understand my professional sensibilities are specialized beyond usefulness at this point. Now back to Venice programing.... I wonder how many different hair dos Gina will have?

I noticed on YT last night that Venice Ep 1 has already had more than 110K views. Which is pretty amazing--basically 10% of the viewers GL had at the end, for a brand-new show. |

Yeah but: repeat hits? Any thoughts on trailer for ep2? I cannae bring myself to care. Those glossy soap-chicks really... I just shut down around the idea of them: look at CC & JL's naturalism in front of the camera, compared-to.

Yeah, I agree. It's such a shame that Elizabeth Keener dropped out at the last minute, because even though she's not a great actor, she doesn't have that soap look and soap acting style that these other women have, and it would have kept the balance tilted in the natural as opposed to soapy direction. |

Interesting news on season 2, and the response they've had so far: http://soapoperadigest.com/features/season_two_for_venice/ With episode two of VENICE ready to go on December 18, Crystal Chappell (Carly, DAYS) is already looking forward to season two. "The fans have been amazing and that's what has made this thing," she says. "They're buying subscriptions, which I think is unbelievably generous and then there are groups of people who are buying subscriptions to give away to other people who can't afford it. I knew these people were loyal and I knew they were very vocal and I trusted them all along the way. I never felt they were going to bail and they knew I wasn't going to bail on them, so that's motivating. Because of what they bought in the [online] store, it funded season one, so it's their investment in this and it's been strong and solid. We made the money for season two on the first episode, so it's going to move forward." Chappell admits she was overwhelmed by the response. "I hired a company in Colorado and they're putting us on four servers to handle all the traffic because we've had 24 million hits since September and 225,000 unique visitors since the first of December through the 5th or 6th; just in about a week," she marvels. "You look at that and you think, 'That's a good rating,' and it makes you want to keep doing it. I'm gong to be able to give my actors some money, a little bonus for Christmas and then next season, I'm hoping to have sponsorship. Fortunately, because of the fans' response, we've had people contact us about meetings about sponsorships, so we're heading into that next phase." She's especially pleased by the reaction from the "Otalia" fans. "They got to see what they wanted to see," she smiles. "And honestly, I didn't know it was this much work! I'm happy to do it and I like doing it a lot, but because of the 'Otalia' story, the energy that was poured into that from the fans and how important it is to them, it's not just a show for me, because at this point I'm not making any money. But it's amazing because people tell me time and time again that they have nowhere to go on television or any medium where they can watch a true depiction of themselves and their lives, so I feel really good that they feel they have a place to go now and I know my partners do as well." The actress already has some changes planned for next season. "We've had some really good feedback and some really great criticism," she says. "I value all of it. Story-wise, the first season was written as a script, so it's been interesting and challenging to find those tag and edit moments. Next season, it will be written probably a little but longer, like 8 minutes or 10, but we'll write it with definite arcs." |

You know, I've been thinking about this on & off, & I'm sort of baffled by it. I don't know why, since that's what being baffled is about. I think it's just--one industry person speaking to an industry magazine in happy-face code. So to me it's void of content since it's not about... uh. Content. It's just about selling product. |
